Palo Alto Official Trailer #1 (2014) - James Franco, Emma Roberts Movie HD
Shy, sensitive April (Emma Roberts) is the class virgin, torn between an illicit flirtation with her soccer coach Mr. B (James Franco) and an unrequited crush on sweet stoner Teddy (Jack Kilmer). Emily (Zoe Levin), meanwhile, offers sexual favors to every boy to cross her path - including both Teddy and his best friend Fred (Nat Wolff), a live wire without filters or boundaries. As one high school party bleeds into the next - and April and Teddy struggle to admit their mutual affection - Fred's escalating recklessness starts to spiral into chaos. An unflinching portrait of adolescent lust, boredom, and self-destruction, PALO ALTO is a teen movie for the ages - an astonishing debut feature from writer-director Gia Coppola, based on the book "Palo Alto: Stories" by James Franco and featuring new music from Devonté Hynes (Blood Orange).

I loved this film. It's gotten lots of criticism for not being "deep" enough, but sometimes I feel you can simply enjoy the style and mood of a movie without it having to be a gruelling social commentary. I could relate to this on so many levels, because April's character is actually that of a very typical schoolgirl - she has friends and goes to parties, she wants to do well in school, and yet she's also got that adolescent sense of rebellion that most of us have instilled in us. The kids in this film just want something to happen, they're frustrated by the immobility of their lives, and yet it's actually a very sweet, touching, realistic film :) You don't always need extreme drama and unrealistically tragic circumstances to make a good film.

***** I'm not sure I fully understood that either. Maybe he was scared of growing up - he could see Teddy starting to become more serious and perhaps he couldn't cope with the idea that he'd soon have to let his childhood go. He had sex with Emily without understanding that you can't just use people and control them like he wanted to control Teddy and Emily both, and I guess he was just a very self-destructive person. (Plus his dad was basically a gay stoner, wasn't he? That would mess with anyone's mind.) Not sure though, he was an interesting character. Technically speaking a really unpleasant guy, but a really broken person all the same.

***** Yep, I guess that's partially why it didn't have any massively deep plot. Unfortunately, most of the time, we're not nearly the deep thinkers we think we are :p

I just watched this movie...I think it's actually a work of pure genius. The reality of the film is what makes it beautiful. The way it focuses on the meaningless of our day-to-day lives. I think that's what gives it a deeper and more powerful meaning, because it's just so brutally honest.

If you are looking for a dark film about teenage angst, depression, and self-destruction then I suggest watching this film. There is just something about it that feels real... the characters and the choices they make and the consequences they are forced to face that result from those choices. I especially felt sorry for Fred. He was a textbook case for someone with a self-destructive personality and somehow I got the feeling he would not live to see thirty.

I live in Palo Alto. I haven't seen the movie but it seems from the trailer that a lot of the aspects of living here were left out. It looks like an ordinary town, but everyone is filthy rich. I hear conversations at school about people's new yachts and how many houses or credit cards they have. If your not a multimillionaire, you probably don't live here.

We're white, we're spoiled, we're bored.. deal with it. All the while inner city teenagers struggle with the lack of money and opportunities, and constantly walking in fear of being shot by cops. The cinematography is the only thing that didn't bore me in this fatalistic movie. Kids did a much better job at showing the angst and the bleakness of teens in New York who have no future.

I think Palo Alto is simply amazing. It does a phenomenal job of illustrating teenage angst and confusion within all the characters. After reading comments I can see why a lot of people are skeptical. The film is to the point and I think the simplicity that everyone is arguing about speaks for itself. There was no need for a mainstream media ending or adding more dialogue for the sake of the storyline...Also, from an actor's point of view the cast did a superb job of connecting with their other. I definitely saw traces of Robert Cohen's method of acting throughout a lot of the cast which made me love it even more. In the end, Gia Coppola captures something very real and poignant by giving us a brief peek into the lives of a group of well-off Californian high schoolers. Then ending it with an abrupt and discomforting feeling that life sometimes leaves us with. If it were done in any other way it would have subtracted from the film's simplistic nature which I think carried the entire movie. It also would have taken away from one of the most prominent if not the most prominent message of the entire flick. The line stated by James Franco who wrote the original short stories and who plays the "older" coach that is in love with a student. "You're young...You don't know why you do things." In that moment you can clearly see the contrast between a slightly older person who has a better grasp on their intentions and who they are, and a teenager like most, faking apathy because of the exposing fact that they truly have no clue what they want or care about. Palo Alto! :)

I feel like this movie is most relatable if you are from California. especially if you are a middle class teen and live in a suburban neighborhood. the way fred and teddy talked, the way they dressed (vans), and the fact that every other person was a stoner. This movie definitely made me reminisce about my youth as teen and did a fine job at portraying modern day California high school culture. plot or no plot this was film was entertaining to watch. I've never been to Palo Alto, but being from Southern California I say it was pretty accurate.

Am I the only one who is really torn about this movie? I liked the acting and the cinematography is beautiful. I really like these kind of movies usually, ones that have a strong visual style, the use of music, just the way the title pops up on the screen is amazing. But it feels like the people who made it just tought "Yeah, we shot this in such a cool way, we don't need a story or anything!" Don't get me wrong, I get that is supposed to be that kind of a movie, a movie with no particular plot for the sake of not having one, but a movie still needs a plot. Excluding Fred, none of the characters have any personality, they're all just "confused teenagers" who do stupid shit because they're "confused teenagers". All the "I love you"s come out of nowhere and have nothing happening in the movie to back them up, while Teddy and April, particularly the former don't even have a real story arc, they just kinda bounce around through hipsterly-shot scenes because they can. The dialogue, which is sometimes great is set up in the weirdest, most unrealistic way possible. Nobody just goes randomly sitting somewhere and talking about suicide and then goes to sit somewhere else and talks about something else pretentiously deep like that. You can have dialogue like that, just at least set it up in a better way, if you're already pretending like this is some "realistic portrayal of high school life". I loved a few aspects of the movie, but I downright hated others, so I guess it balances out to an "ok". It wasn't exactly a waste of 2 hours, but I just can't get how people can love something so empty, pretentious and in love with it's hipness.

"how people can love something so empty, pretentious and in love with it's hipness. " maybe for a lot of ppl that was why they loved it. it's its* hipness btw. it's a different thing to say the story was empty by mistake, and another to say that that was what made the story work. the characters have a lot going on but no one to speak to. they fancy each other but get it off with others. they have friends who are bad for them and lives that look good but are shit. it's reality for a lot of ppl, a reality that's empty beneath its vibrant surface and i think it strikes a chord with ppl and makes them think, "i know how that character feels: a lot and nothing at the same time". no there is no real story, but that's what makes it feel honest - because teenagers don't have stories; they're just stuck with random things that go nowhere maybe that was the point of the producers and writers, and maybe it wasn't think it would have been a drag, a long corny drag to watch them get intimate and like each other first, only to have everything that happened in the movie, happen between them later.

the point of the movie was to use its cinematography and "hipster-y shot scenes" was to capture the emotions of the average teenager, not so much for the plot
@DarklordofDOOM57

daylite34 Yeah, but a movie consists of many things, cinematography, music, acting, directing and most importantly, STORY. This should could've been just a long music video or trailer or experimental video or anything, but if you attempt at making a movie, having no story on purpose still means not having a story. Also, I am 16 and I get the whole "confused teenager" thing quite well and I still don't think that's an excuse for lousy writing.
@daylite34
@daylite34 9 жыл бұрын
DarklordofDOOM57 I understand! I am 17 and I was really confused the first time I saw an emotion-driven indie movie with not much plot. But there are different types of genres which focus on different things. Most mainstream movies which we have been exposed to (and I love) are mostly plot-driven rather than emotion-driven, so that's what we're used to. These indie movies are supposed to be more realistic because, let's be honest, these events and stories may not be the most exciting, but they are most realistic to what average teenagers go through and experience. There's no right or wrong type of movie, it's just a different genre. I don't think it's lousy writing, since some of the conversations and jokes the teenagers were written saying in the movie seemed like believable banter that I hear around my high school

I could relate to this film so much, the story, characters, the mood. I have friends who remind me so much of the characters, I've been in similar situations...its by far the most accurate movie about adolescence I've ever seen.

Everyone's crying because James and Emma are in this but can I just point out how beautiful Nat Wolff was in this movie. And his hair! And the fact his girlfriend (Margaret Qualley) was in this movie too, that just draws me into this movie even more. Also, the music in this trailer is beautiful.

I'm just gna list some coming of age films okay.. Perks of bein a wallflower*(probably seen already) Twelve (also has Emma Roberts) Remember the daze* (my favorite/the trailer doesn't do the film justice so don't get discouraged) Rushmore Moonrise kingdom Water Lilies (It's a french lesbian movie, but it involves teens and its simplicity makes it a beautiful movie) - it's not like Blue's the Warmest Color..but that movie works too :) Kids (really explicit and urban) Thirteen (explicit and kinda disturbing) Welcome to the dollhouse Kings of Summer Electrick Children Mean Creek Stuck In Love (It involves adults too, but doesn't take away from the coming of age stories in it) same thing with the movie Breathe In The virgin suicides (directed by sofia Coppola AUNT* of the director of Palo Alto gia) The basketball diaries (has young Leo) Adventureland* The spectacular now* Submarine* Can't hardly wait (comedy) Dazed and Confused Breakfast club, sixteen candles, fast times at ridge mont high (and there's plenty other 80s coming of age) I put stars next to the ones that are similar to Palo Alto There's also tv shows like Freaks and Geeks and Skins as well
