Palo Duro Canyon ranks as our #1 favorite state park in Texas and in our opinion rivals any of the best state parks in America! We traveled to the canyon in April of 2019 for a week-long vacation that we will never forget! Here is a breakdown of our trip:

25:05 Mack Dick Group Pavilion
29:39 Paseo Del Rio Trail
32:29 Kiowa Trail
35:37 CCC Trail
36:49 Ending Timelapse
Day one: On the first day we checked-in to our campsite and then headed back up to the top of the canyon to explore the stunning views from one of the main overlooks and then explored the Pioneer Amphitheater.
Day two: The second day was spent exploring The Lighthouse Trail which is one of the major highlights of Palo Duro Canyon State Park.
Day Three: On the third day we explored the other RV camping loops and cabins.
Day Four: We were met with overcast skies on day four but still set out to explore the Mack Dick Group Pavillion and the Paseo Del Rio Trail where we got some good use out of our mountain bikes!
Day Five: We had so much fun on the Paseo Del Rio trail that we decided to explore another trail-The Kiowa Trail.
Day Six: On the 6th day we explored The CCC Trail that has some of the best views in the entire park!
Day Seven: We left out at around 9 a.m. for home and enjoyed a wonderful drive on the way back to East Texas!

My learning at Palo Duro is to start my truck on low gear when going up the canyon road, even lower than the first gear below drive. It was nerve wracking as my F250 was barely moving and I had my foot all the way down. But we made it. I guess another learning is that the trails sometimes are easier than indicated on the trail map. We stayed away from the Rock Garden trail because of its rating. On the day before we left, we walked it and it was great! Thank you for your video.

That was a great video! We haven’t RV camped there since 2006. We need to go visit again and take our bikes this time. We aren’t avid mountain bikers either, but those trails y’all rode looked very doable.

We live about 30 minutes from PD Canyon, have been many times. A couple of things to be aware of: make reservations way in advance - we couldn't get in last year or the year before because they were booked solid; and beware of the late spring and summer heat - it can literally kill you down on the floor, no joke. Also, summer rains can, and often do, cause dangerous flooding, especially at the back-end campsites.

@@SunsetSeekers Thanks for the video! Once upon a time, like 30 years ago, you could just pull up to the check in and book a RV site for the week. Chances of that happening anymore are slim - but that's good because so many families are getting to really experience our gem.

Loved your video. We are purchasing a Patriot X1 camper. It will be our first night leaving the dealer in Durant, Ok. We’ll just be one night heading home to North Idaho. Our bed is up on the Patriot but changing room and kids tent attached use pegs. Any suggestions as to what campsite we should try and reserve. Blessings!

Thanks for sharing. We're partial to that Juniper camping loop. We camped there in early 90's and took our Mom and Dad with us. We enjoyed it very much. There use to be a small train ride there at the time and we also went horseback riding. If you go early spring it will freeze on you at times.

Michael is a gifted writer and videographer. Every video is informative and enjoyable! I am proud to say that we are honored to travel with them sometimes, and they are like our children and dear friends. I agree with y'all about traveling the back roads to a destination; we much prefer the "less traveled" route, as well. Those were some amazing views, and I enjoyed hiking with you two (from my comfy arm chair). We are looking forward to our next trip together to Queen Wilhelmena SP soon.

Well, in case you didn't already know, the park is a little over 8 miles long from one end to the other so I'm not sure how well a scooter tour would work for Palo Duro anyway. There are plenty of camping loops to explore though! Palo Duro is now our favorite state park---love it! You will too!
@DudeRV

@@SunsetSeekers San Angelo has something like 15 miles of paved road and I did OK with that and that was before the second battery, so 8 miles is very doable, it is the down hill grade that I am most worried about! I will figure it out when we get there. We are headed to Dangerfield SP next weekend that will be the last park in north east Texas!

I'm not sure exactly how long you can stay at a Texas state park. Christy and I are not full-timers, we just vacation in our rig. Unless you plan on becoming a park host I don't think you can stay for more than a week. I would recommend calling the state park, they are normally very helpful and Informative over the phone.
