What this gentleman doesn’t know about large machines is not worth knowing! His attention to detail is second to none, and he delivers the knowledge so well, that even I can understand it! I have watched this man’s boots and hands for years now, but recently he made some shorts showing his face…finally!

Thanks for putting together another impressive video documentary. I remember back in the day when this haul truck and the larger R-190 were top of the line for mining and any kind of mass earthmoving projects. The original Euclid paint color was fantastic. That Euclid green always made their machines stand out. I was wondering if this particular R-170 is still working regularly, or is it retired? The truck appears to be in pretty good condition. Take Good Care.

Agreed, I love the high-lite green color of these trucks. Even the "look" of a Euclid is just mean and badass looking. Sadly today everything is yellow or orange. Oh, and I will be featuring the R190 in the future!

BIG old girl and THANKS, Pal! An R-35 was as big a Euc as I ever herded and a 773 Cat was the biggest here. Still is as far as I know but being out of the loop is wonderful. Watch out for rolling rocks with trucks under them and God Bless All Yall!

Cool old truck. I always thought the diesel/ electric was a great simple design, especially in haulage units. Why it was not utilized more blows my mind. Thanks Justin. Just for the record, I’ve decided to hang up the hard hat and steel toes this coming week. Over 45 years in the coal mining. Will probably do some part time stuff down the road, but for now I’m ready for a break.

All my documentary's are scripted before hand so I get the wording right but they are filmed live. Occasionally I will do a voice over to correct something I messed up while filming. I also plan the whole walk-through before hand so I know what and what not to show and the route I want to take throughout the machine. Thanks!

Thanks again for another great video! Any idea why they’d used the diesel electric configuration? As I understand, traditional mechanical driveline is more efficient.
@williamhall9204
@williamhall9204 3 ай бұрын
@imdavid28 One big advantage to the diesel electric system is that it eliminates the mechanical transmission. No torque converter, transfer case, differential, etc. This adds up to a substantial weight savings. The diesel electric system should be more fuel efficient due to a lower empty truck weight. Of course there are other factors involved. Maintenance of the diesel electric haul truck should be less expensive also. The downside is that to do the maintenance you will need mechanics as well as electrical technicians. Traditional mechanical drive haul trucks are still being built and in some applications they are preferred. To give you an example, Caterpillar has many of their giant 797 haul trucks operating around the world. Also we can refer to the legendary Caterpillar 793 haul trucks in the 240 - 255 tons class. So yes mechanical drive still has a strong presence in the mining industry, especially with the models available from Caterpillar. The battle between these two drive systems has been going on for decades. I’m pretty sure that as of 2024 the diesel electric drive for haul trucks holds a fairly comfortable lead in market share. Take Care.

What's a trolley brake?
@PAmining

Essentially it's the foot brake on the floor, just activated by a lever. The purpose is to hold the truck in position while being loaded so the driver doesn't have to hold the brake pedal
