I’m Kirsty Rebecca and I create easy-to-follow, realistic art tutorials so you can relax and enjoy creating professional fine art that you feel proud of!
**Since making this tutorial, I have been working with Pan Pastel to create my own set of Pans!
"General Realism by Kirsty Rebecca" is a set of 20 Pans that includes these 5 basic colours as well as 15 of my essential colours for creating a range of subjects such as wildlife, portraits, landscapes, still life and florals!
You can create new colours/adjust the pre-mixed colours using the 5 base colours, but having these 15 extra pre-mixed colours will save you a lot of time because you don't have to mix every colour 😊

Nice to see some panpastel-tutorials over here. As I said on your patreon channel I find panpastel somewhat difficult to master but I love the brightness of the colours. Thankyou, I appreciate it! Pan pastels by themselves are great for landscapes! I would find it difficult to draw animals, because I like a bit more detail... but I think you could do wildlife if you work large enough! But more impressionistic/expressive landscape with less detail is easy to do with Pan Pastels :)

Thanks, that's helping me a lot. I do my own paint mixes since I only have the primary colours to paint all the shades. I will do that with newly acquired set of 5 pan pastels and I'll get the raw umber and the burnt sienna since making browns with only the primary colours alone. And I do plan on using this along with coloured pencils.

I tried making sunsets and the Pan Pastel blends so much better on normal drawing paper than on Clairfontaine PastelMat. I think for soft undefined subjects like clouds, regular paper works much faster, especially if you want to blends straight on the paper. I also tried Fabriano pastel paper and I liked that it didn't grab on too much to my pastels. But for defined and sharp pastel drawing I do like PastelMat
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the paper choice definitely makes a difference depending on what subjects you're doing 😊 I find if you want more than a few layers, it doesn't work well on smooth paper, but I can use Pans on Pastelmat for any subject (whether it's a simple like clouds, or complicated subjects with fur 😊 )
@helenarichard
@helenarichard 2 жыл бұрын
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt Do you mean that PastelMat allows better to put one subject over the other, not just color blending? That is true. Regular paper will blend everything too much I suppose. It can come in handy for some subject, like mixed textures: I drew a detailed butterfly with a fluffy core body and was very pleased with all the different blues I got on the Fabriano paper and bright white (it was grey paper, wonderful for white animals or animals with a white edge. But I don't need to tell you that I suppose 🤪

Hello Kirsty, your video was very helpful to me, because I do have a view pan pastels but not the right colors to mix like you do. I think about it to buy the 20 regular set with the black and white a can make then the tint and the tones and the darks. I use them for my underpainting too. Although Sometimes I make my underpainting with the Faber Castel Albrecht dürer too. But...My struggle is, losing my reference drawing beneed the pan pastels or underpainting... do you have an advise for this?
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 4 жыл бұрын
The 20 set of the pure/painting colours is perfect to be able to mix any colour you need, easily! When I do the base layer with pan pastels, I do it really lightly so I can add more pastel pastel pencil on top.. Because I'm using it so lightly, the paper still shows through in a lot of places and I tend to block in the sections between the outlines, and not go over the top of the outlines if I can help it Usually I don't put pan pastel in any intricate areas either, I just go straight in with pastel pencil I'm not sure if that makes sense but if you watch any of my other pastel videos, you can see the process a bit better 😊 This one is a good example kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h7Rmls1lltiVk5c.html

@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt Жыл бұрын
I also have conte sticks, but Pan Pastels are actually less expensive in the long run Unlike pastel sticks, you can buy the basic set of 5 colours (red, yellow, blue, black and white) and mix any colour you need, just like paint! That is something you can't do easily with soft pastel sticks or pastel pencils (this is why people usually have hundreds of pastel sticks/pencils - which is way more expensive than buying 5 Pan Pastels) They're actually not that expensive when you compare how much pastel is in each pan Pan Pastels contain 40% more pastel than an average stick and have 4-5 times more coverage. They last a very long time in comparison to sticks I've had my full set of pan pastels for about 5 years and haven't run out of any colour yet, and I do a lot of artwork, and if you take care of the Sofft tools, they last a long time as well 😊 There are also many other benefits such as not having to touch the pastel (so it's less mess on your hands/artwork/desk etc), less excess dust in the air, as well as being able to control how much pastel you are applying to your surface which means you don't fill up the tooth of the paper too quickly - allowing for the addition of a few layers of pastel pencils/coloured pencils etc if you wish! You can also use the smaller Sofft tools or brushes to apply into smaller areas, which can be hard to to with a soft pastel stick I honestly recommend Pan Pastels over any other type of pastel because they are actually more cost effective (along with all the other benefits mentioned above) 😊

Can pan pastels be erased with normal erasers?
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt Жыл бұрын
Yes, technically it does, but it also depends on which paper you are using! If you used a smooth paper, it would erase completely (almost back to the white of the paper) But if you work on Pastelmat (which is the only paper I recommend) it is harder to erase and it doesn't quite go back to the colour of the paper. If you make a mistake, you can use a kneaded eraser to "press and lift" enough pastel off to be able to cover that area with more pastel again 😊 Hope that helps!

Hello, thank you for these links. I dropped out of art school in 1968. I didn't think I was any good, inspite of the tutors very kind comments. I'm 72 now. At the start of this year, I decided to try painting once more. I have surprised myself by producing some "reasonable" results. I'm now starting witht the most scary medium for me - pastels. I stayed well away from them, due to my ability to smudge everything into a grey mess. I was ashamed and left art school. By the way, I had no desire to be offensive, I hope I didn't upset you.

You're welcome 😊 It's okay, I wasn't offended! I just thought I'd share the tutorials that you might find useful instead I never really understood pastels either and found them very messy when I first started, but then I discovered other ways that you can work with them (like Pan Pastels and pastel pencils) which can be a lot less messy and easier to work with! I use these supplies in most of my pastel tutorials now and only use the pastel sticks occasionally because they tend to be very messy and hard to control! So hopefully some of my other videos will help you out on your pastel journey 😊
