This film was made for Pan American World Airways to document the first round-the-world passenger flight over the North and South Poles on Pan Am Boeing 747-SP-21 called Clipper New Horizon.
On October 28, 1977, Pan Am marks the airline's 50th anniversary by taking 172 passengers on a one-of-a-kind flight originating in San Fransisco and flying over the North Pole to London and then on to Capetown, South Africa then over the South Pole to Aukland, New Zealand and then back to San Fransisco.
The aircraft, N533PA, entered service with Pan Am in 1976 as Clipper Freedom, however, not soon after was renamed Clipper Liberty Bell for a special "Round-the-World-Equatorial-Flight" to commemorate the bicentennial of the United States. The plane was renamed Clipper New Horizon for the round-the-world polar flight in October of 1977. The aircraft would be renamed two more times, as Clipper Young America and Clipper San Fransisco, before being sold to United Airlines along with the Pacific Division in 1986 as part of the controversial $750 million deal.

That oldest passenger on the flight was born in 1896 that’s a crazy amount of technological advancement in one lifetime.

A few years ago while on a routine EVA Airlines flight from JFK to Teipei... we flew within a few miles of the north pole as shown by the in-flight tracker. As it was in October the polar night had already settled in some time ago and so there was nothing to see out the window. There was no fanfare or announcement and most of the passengers were asleep. I still felt excited however. The year of the Pan Am Polar flight (1977) was the year my wife and I got married. It was a good year!

I was in Auckland, 18 months and 29 days old, probably fast asleep, about a 9 minute drive from the airport. What an epic flight! Amazing that Auckland was part of this special journey. ✈️

Will be closer to another 50 years soon.. since this 50th anv flight in 77. Even with the technical advances since, a latest airliner design would still only just match these long range flight times.. only with a few more passengers than today.

It’s too bad Pan Am was never able to get any domestic US routes. They might’ve been able to survive.

They did get some domestic routes when they merged with National Airlines in 1980 but that merger did more harm to them than help them 😢😢😢

I've seen this video before. I've always wondered during the stop at Joburg, was it purposely arranged to have Miss Universe presenting to the mayor as a message, knowing that she's black & South Africa at the time practiced apartheid? Or was it a simple coincidence?
