Thanks for the prompting! The last time I tried turning the camera on it wouldn't power on... but ever since turning it on the other day it has turned on every time! Hopefully it continues to turn on reliably when I need an extra 1080p angle for a project :)

I have this camera and use it in my studio and am very satisfied with it, really great picture. I chose to use it versus my gh5 in studio. I use the interchangeable lenses (vintage glass), and the GH5 for remote shoots. It still holds up in 2020.

Same here. I have a GH5 with the XLR attachment. The GH5 works great but for my YT videos my AF100A cant be beat. The video files import in a flash in FCPX and render out just as fast plus it has every function I could want, besides 4k.

I have a AF-101 with the kit 14-140mm lens - bought it from new when first launched. Used it on broadcast and corporate projects at which it excelled - still have it as a back up. Nearly always used with an Atomos recorder. Don't forget that "The Raid" movie was filmed using a couple of these (with decent lenses).

I have this camera since a few years. I bought it just for fun because it was so cheap and i already had lenses. Every few month when i am bored, i take it and do some shots and experiments. It get better and better! I found out that it works very well with the Viltrox EF-M2 Speedbooster and the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 lens. And the BPress gamma in combination with the Norm2 matrix with maybe a few little tweaks looks amazing! It have this "Panasonic-Mojo" straight out of camera. I am really thinking about to use it on a professional shoot (where no 4k, Log is needed). Just because i am courious what the feedback would be (im sure not bad, its still a professional tool). Maybe the AF 100 will become a "nostalgic" collectors item and some clients will demand it because of its special look, its "Mojo" ;-).

Its very important to note you can record 422 color out the HD SDI at whatever compression you want, so the only real drawback is the sensor being 8 bit. However, if you can get a varicam on ebay, that camera has very similar color space, and its 10 bit 422.

I had one and liked it a lot expect for the skin tone and that was a problem because all my work was talking heads. Complexions had patchy purple and yellow areas. I shot some colorful theatrical performances for Archival and it was very good for that purpose. The small file size is very convenient. Sadly, and I hope I'm wrong, it won't be long until computers abandon AVCHD I'm afraid. It was difficult to focus even with the large but low quality EVF. I set mine to B&W plus red peaking and it helped a lot. If Panasonic put a GH5 (or 6) in a similar but smaller sized body they could rule. Imagine an updated version with their 10-25mm and 25-50mm f/1.7 zoom lenses! You didn't mention much about the HIGH QUALITY mic/line inputs. They work extremely well. And the built in ND is a great feature.
@YourStoryStudios

Thanks for sharing your experience! Yes the mic inputs are very handy and having built in ND is always helpful when shooting outside.

My OM-D E-M1 Mark II shoots DCI 4K at 237 Mbps (max) and at 8-bit 4:2:0 internally and 4:2:2 over HDMI in .MOV files. So, am I hearing that it mops the floor with this camera? I know ergonomics and audio are better on the AF100 for video, but I've been rigging my camera up to compensate for at least the ergonomics. I know the internal NDs are handy to have, but I just screw a variable ND on my lens, and it works fine. Of course, the GH5 is even better at 10-bit 4:2:2. I'm waiting on those to come down a bit in price on the used market.
@YourStoryStudios
@YourStoryStudios 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are correct in regards to mbps 👍
@danieldougan269
@danieldougan269 3 жыл бұрын
I don't mean to trash the AF100. It was a groundbreaking camera when it was first released. But the video specs you can get today on a mirrorless camera like the E-M1 II for about the same price on the used market just make this harder to justify today. No, you don't get the camcorder ergonomics, but you do get the added benefit of shooting stills and much better autofocus. And, if you're willing to spend a little more on the GH5, you can even get an XLR adapter.

@@danieldougan269 Af-100 seems like the perfect budget cam for run and gun documentary style footage, where the viewer can be very forgiving, and I can use my olympus pro 12-40 1.8 on it. and then I can upgrade to something like dvx2000 later. I just love the form factor

Very good thank you. But I'm not sure the GH4 takes better pictures. AG af 100 has many more options. She's a bit of a diva (it took me to get the right mindset), but if you do the right picture profile, she's still very good.

I actually think the camera holds up well for a studio camera, I didn't notice AF hunting, 8 bit okay we know about that, but overall a very useful camera. Just wondering if you've ever shot seminars with this unit? On a long lens? if AF face detect holds up at all?
@YourStoryStudios
@YourStoryStudios 4 жыл бұрын
I have used this camera for recording seminars but it was on my manual Zeiss lens as a locked off shot, so no auto focus was used. Honestly I wouldn't trust the auto focus to work 100% to a satisfactory level.

I’m so grateful you posted this review. I’m a proud owner of an AF100... it’s still useful for a lot of contexts. Can I ask you what menu setting you used make your Zeiss ZF.2 lens compatible with your camera body? I got myself a Novoflex adapter but wasn’t able to figure out the final step. Thanks so much in advance. So grateful to you. Subscribing!
@YourStoryStudios

I just used a dummy adapter I got from eBay and my lenses worked. They aren’t the ZF.2 lenses. I think they are the original version (version 1). Since they are all manual they don’t need an adapter to power it.

The thing about the af100 is that all of the profiles have terrible highlight roll off, which makes the footage out of it look like it was shot on a 20 years old dv camcorder.

Yes you have to go in and work with the setting on these Panasonic cameras.(Even the newer ones) There are a ton of them and they are there because Panasonic is a company that is about dialing in your image in camera, not in post. I have literally matched Panasonic cameras to every other brand out there, Sony, Canon, black magic, and I do it in camera, not in post. It is not really a good practice to recreate a whole different look in post with your color grade. It really needs to be done mostly in camera and then in post your just making tweeks to make it more intense or less.
@imabigsandwich1292

@@crossnetworkllc As far as I know newer panasonic camera don't have the extensive image control with rgb gain, knee, phase etc. Because I own the s5 and the g7 and have shot some stuff on the eva1. But even then the af100's colorscinece is just quite limited.
@crossnetworkllc
@crossnetworkllc 3 жыл бұрын
@@imabigsandwich1292 Try the shadow/highlight feature. Also they have a completely manual white balance where you can control the color of the shadows and highlights. I have the G7 and have been able to match it as a b cam to Canon c100, 60d and Sony A7s. The AF100 does have more options but it's very customizable.

This camera shoots 8 bit 4:2:2 on the hdmi output.....so you’ll need an external recorder that will also allow you to shoot in a much better codex for post processing....I use an Atomos ninja for that and it works very well....plus it gives you a high def 5” monitor as well..... cheers !!

Cine d is not for getting a cinematic image, it is for dynamic range push (hence the letter D). Don't use this unless shooting under controlled circumstances because you will get noisy footage.

@@YourStoryStudios I have bought an XF10 in the process. I wondered why Panasonic didn't pursue this camcorder system further, they could have just slap the GH5/6 sensor processor into a camcorder body giving it better IBIS and XLR inputs without much cost.
