That may be true but at least from my experience most people had well given up on VHS by that point. Again though, I guess I'm only speaking from personal experience. I worked at a movie rental store back then and by 2006 we hadn't stocked VHS for a few years.

I've been tossing the idea around. to be completely honest I don't really use it much but its such a unique item I'm not sure if I want to hold onto it or not.

+The Creepernator it's pretty strange. it's a bit of an odd analogy but I don't really think VHS is seen as "retro" like maybe Laserdiscs are. I think their just seen more as obsolete kind of like 8 tracks in the 90's. 8 tracks now days are starting to have a retro appeal and people I think may be looking for 8 track players. I've even seen those all-in-one record/8 track/cassette/cd/mp3 players. I could imagine this thing being made in the future as a novelty device to cash in on VHS retro fever or somthing but when it did come out it was just odd because as I said I don't think VHS has attained that retro status yet.

Exact opposite with this unit. Yes it upscales but it also has a built in picture correction. Trust me when I say this. When you watch a VHS on this unit via HDMI there is a very noticeable difference in picture quality. No it doesn't look 100% like real 1080p (despite it being output at 1080p) but it definitely look a lot better than what you remember VHS.

no. If the source material is SD from my understanding there's no way to just make it HD. What's the saying..."garbage in, garbage out" What it does is upscale it so it looks okay on an HD TV.

+Frederick Guese AFAIK most DVD/VHS combo players have component but will only output the VHS signal via s-video at best. I recently read that there are DVD/VHS recorder units that will output the VHS via component but I don't think they upconvert the signal. my DVD/Laserdisc combo machine for instance has component but only if using a DVD. If I want to watch a laserdisc it will only output via s-video or composite.

They are pretty hard to find and I don't think all that many were made. Best advice I have is scour the piles of DVD and VCR players at Goodwill. Even try Craigslist or services like that. They tend to go for a premium on EBay and I've seen them sell for over $200

There were perhaps only a few thousand produced. It was only on the market for about 1 year. 2009-2010. It was sold at its cheapest for like $155. Now they sell for a high premium on EBay. $400-1,000 depending on the condition. I actually bought one from EBay recently for $479. A very expensive purchase but it was well worth it because I needed to convert 100 VHS home movie tapes to digital for my own personal history. I would only recommend buying it if you can find one for $200-300. Don't over pay like I did unless you absolutely need it.

Goodwill, they don't know any better. to them, it was just one of the tons of VHS combo players they get in every other day. They've got smart to some things like older video games and consoles depending on the manager at the moment and they likely price check stuff like that but anything that looks like a VCR and even DVD/Blu-ray players these days just get a $19.99 sticker and thrown on the shelf.

I had no idea it was worth anything when I picked it up. I actually almost passed it up cause I thought $20 was a little pricy. Glad I grabbed it though. I actually don't use it much so I always think about selling it off but its so unique I always just end up deciding to keep it. I did use it recently to transfer some home movies from VHS to digital.

Also a Logitech Harmony 650 remote that controls up to 5 devices usually works with the VHS / DVD or Blu ray combos as they are still relatively new units (i.e. 10 years old or so) so purchasing 2nd hand without a remote is not a problem. I just checked the DMP-BD70V in the database and its catered for. I recently scored a LG RC389H VHS DVD writer combo from a local recycle centre for $20. It has HDMI out to upscale VHS tape really well and so looks considerably better than s-video out. Also because my unit is one of the last VHS players, when I took the top off to clean the internals and heads it was pretty much immaculate inside as the VHS feature only had little use as most of the time DVD was used. The fact these units were during a technological cross over period and were catering to people that still had some VHS tapes but preferred newer DVD technology, they generally have relatively little VHS use and in good condition. Also with a healthy VHS tape collecting scene developing (e.g. FB VHS tape collector groups etc) all these units with HDMI out, and especially with writer capabilities, are starting to increase in value.

Honestly as a kid I don't ever remember thinking "man this looks like crap, its barely watchable, I cant wait till somone invents some sort of high resolution disc format". It's only now when we compare it to HD format media that we start thinking it wasn't so hot.

Yes, your right, that was a mistake, you can output 1080p over component. Most of the component inputs on HDCRT's though that I've come across are also labeled as only accepting 720P and 1080i and many of those early HD devices that output via component seems restricted to 1080i max. I think the Xbox 360 did 1080P over component.

I have just get my home from ebay (used) it is great, but when i plays whs it is only black/white colors but the dvd/blueray works Great on the tv. good question. I have no idea. I suppose if a shop worked on VHS/DVD combo players or still bothered repairing VHS players and also did bluray separately it wouldn't be to diffrent

It was produced for the last of the last hold outs who refused to upgraded to the digital age. I believe Panasonic made it to convince those who still has VHS but perhaps were curious to try out DVD and Blu Ray. That way you were able to have everything in one unit.

Blu Ray came out in 2006 and the last of the VHS shipments and operating record website operated within 2008 when it halted production and died.
