Panasonic G9 got a big firmware update 2.4 which improves autofocus, gives us that red recording box, and some other stuff. How does it compare to the old Canon EOS R with dual pixel autofocus? And how about those Olympus announcements? Olympus PEN E-P7 and the 8-25mm f4 Pro lens. Let's talk about those strange releases.

Have you tried the 2x teleconverter on the g9? I've had it mapped to a back button for a week but haven't checked the shots closely for any quality loss yet.

You don't own the R6 right, bruh? In my eyes it doesn't make any sense to go for the cheaper G9 when you got the R6 that has better AF, ibis, better everything 😅

@@virenp1983 weight, money could be two factors? Ibis no bad on on G9 too? For marginally less money performance is nice. Have you looked at images from the combo? I compared both R6 & G9, and while i loved the quality of images on R6, G9 page had another effect at play because of the crop factor (background blur was greater) and amazing separation was a consistent result. I feel that could be another factor.

@@weizenobstmusli8232 I know you can have your own reasons to choose the cheaper, lighter gear. But, I don't think that the advantages that you can get with it can outweigh the things that the more higher end gear has to offer....but, it's what works best for you right? If you want to shoot a hawk flying around with manually focusing with a G9 that's your choice :)

Upgraded my G9 last night and this is the first comparison video I’ve found. G9 pulsing is much lower. I hardly noticed it. Still slower, but much more reliable.

Ahh my G9 keeps getting better and better with time. Always awesome colors, nothing short of excellent video and image quality, and now an improved auto focus. I definitely made the right choice when I bought mine just a couple months ago! Cheers 🍻.

It seems like AF-C performance in video on the G9 has improved dramatically with Olympus lenses that's kinda weird, wasn't expecting that.

It's not weird because Panasonic cannot use DFD with non-Panasonic lenses. It uses basic contrast detect, where the focus moves smoothly in a linear fashion, check for critical focus at every millimetre. So it's slow, but Panasonic's processor runs it fast enough in this situation. DFD was invented by Panasonic to make contrast detect faster by skipping the linear checks and throw the lens into near critical focus, before having 2 checks front+back to get pinpoint focus. In theory it's good for photos, but it's the exact opposite of what needs to be done in videos. It's as bad as a focus puller panicking and twisting the ring several times to get focus.

There are two basic components to autofocus: * The system that detects the distance and tells the lens where it should focus * The algorithms the camera uses to _choose what to focus on_ Dual Pixel autofocus is the thing that detects the distance, and it does work really well. But the R doesn't have head/eye detection algorithms nearly as good as the R5 and R6, or the Sony's. So the 'knowing what to focus on' part is the weak link.

It seemed to focus fine in this video. The odd thing is my RP focuses better than my friend's R and we both have latest firmware. We do a lot of street photography and if there's a lot of faces in the shot, the R takes longer to grab a face/eye. It also loses the face more easily. Once my RP grabs a face it never loses it. Same with an eye, if the person doesn't move out of range.

I can’t seem to update my GH5S every time I try to unzip the file it doesn’t work! Just need my autofocus improvement on that camera and it’s the perfect camera.

Format a card in the camera to be updated, and , then perhaps ask a friend to unzip the upgrade files , and sent it / them to you , or give them the card to put it on if they live nearby. The update works fine , but only put one file on the card at a time , and reformat in between updates if you are doing camera and lens updates .

Oh I have been waiting for this new firmware and clip for sooo long. Seems pulsing is gone. GOBE, I use it, but for wider shots. On the Leica 200mm however there is noticable softness. Great clip, enjoyed it, especially the fake store scene. That Olympus 12mm seems to work really well with the G9 and I do love the look!

Good one on Pannyboy engineers! Seems like the pulsing was reduced drastically. Could still be a tad faster, but than again it was alright. SOme other youtuber (miro) found out, that higher framerates (50 or 6ßfps instead of 24/25/30) leads to faster and more reliable AF. Colors though were disappointing, Canon colors were much nicer, healthier. Overall all G9 user should be happy for the lastest update, for sure worth using it.

The 35mm 1.8 STM is a little bit of a slow lens too. An adapted USM lens would actually be faster than the STM

Out of curiosity, does it make CAF usable with an adapted lens like the sigma 18-35? I'm mainly interested in using this combination for stills burst-mode, where the subject is moving towards the camera. Cheers !

Always enjoyable. Have a G9 and it is a beast....rarely an issue with AF if needed, albeit occasionally in video if not good light and mostly just a bit slower. Love it and it keeps getting better...that said, Canon colour seems just right. Recall another channel comparing a Sony 6400 to the Mk6 11, Sony clearly sharper, but almost everyone preferred the looks of the Canon video. Both had their strengths, somewhat like here!

I'm really impressed with Panny colours - much better than the overly yellowish Canon output. I would like to see a comparison between current Panasonic vs Olympus output. With my older cameras I see that Panny has overexposed undersaturated reds while Oplympus has glorious reds and overall colour science.

@@david.stachon It wasn't the case in the past. I didn't like Panasonic colours at all and really used to like Canon colours (Canon 40D for example ... I even prefered it over Nikon). However here in this comparison that G9 looks more Canon-like than Canon itself. That R5 output reminds me of old Nikon D90 "yellow friendly" colour science which of I'm not a fan at all. I like the slightly "colder" oldschool Canon output.

I like the Panasonic colours ... I'm aware I'm in a minority in that. It's very personal, and I have no problem with others preferring the colours from other manufacturers. However one thing I have learned is that you can't compare colours by looking at videos like this on KZfaq, because people edit the footage as best they can to make it look like what looks best to them, which might be different from what comes out the camera and might be different from what I think looks good too. There is also the debate about what looks best as opposed to what looks accurate. Which again is down to individual preference. I'm very pleased with the colours I get from the G9.👍

I think the Leica 12mm specifically needs a firmware update or something. It's a good lens but the 8-18 and 12-60 behave better in autofocus
