Oh my gosh, I loved this. I am likely going to pick up a GH5 shortly as I think it's such a great value and I won't buy a camera with recording limits. Love your channel and explanation. Thanks Costa Sparrow...you're very welcome! I've not tried HLG yet, so I'll definitely have a play. I mainly film wedding though and my main concern in that it produces huge file sizes, unless I'm mistaken. However, it might work nicely for small parts of the day, such as the couple shoot? In terms of maximum ISO, I try to stick to 800 but will go to 1600 at a push.

Hi there, Do you have any videos on how to shoot with this camera and adjust white balance, ISO and the other settings you can adjust. Do you use auto ISO? Settings are great, but no one seems to explain how to actually shoot with this camera and get the shots, just settings. How to use the focus practically and how to control the light practically.

@CameraGeeks
@CameraGeeks 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Fulvio! You're welcome. You can use the general rule of doubling the shutter speed in comparison with the frame rate number. However, if you set it to shutter angle, as I did in this video, you just need to keep it set at 180° and it will change accordingly whenever you alter your frame rate.

Another great, informative video. Just wondered... I’m colourblind and struggle to create a “look” in post. Apart from general corrections, I tend not to grade. What do you think are best “out of camera” settings and why? Thank you, I love your videos!
@CameraGeeks
@CameraGeeks 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Joe! Great to hear from you and thanks for your kind words. A friend of mine recently shot a wedding in the Standard mode on his new S5 and it looked great...no grading needed at all! Obviously you just need to make sure you nail exposure and white balance as you film as there will be little room for any corrections in post. I personally use Natural with sharpness and saturation dialled down a bit. It's pretty close to the final look straight out of camera and I can just tweak things a little if I want to.

Thanks Teo so much for the nice comment...really appreciate it! I find the combination of the histogram together with the zebras enough for what I need when filming weddings. The waveform monitor is really useful but takes up so much of the screen. Quick question - with the GH5 set to PAL 50hz its not possible to adjust the recording frame rate to 120fps. It allows this selection in 24hz cinematic. Is using 24hz going to cause issues? Have i missed something in the settings which will allow more flexible choices? 125fps is available in the 50hz PAL mode.

I'd love some more details about your picture profile settings. Why drop the sharpness down, specifically? And also why the noise reduction? The GH5 has poor noise performance in low light settings so wouldn't you want the noise reduction at 0 or even higher? Thanks for any advice.
@CameraGeeks
@CameraGeeks Жыл бұрын
Hi. I've not owned the GH5 for a couple of years now but it's common practice to reduce the sharpness, as most modern cameras tend to ever sharpen and a lot of the time, we're looking for a softer, more natural look when going for a cinematic style. You can always add some sharpness back in post if you wanted to. Again with noise reduction, I think it's because you can reduce noise more effectively in post production.

Hi (me again, I love you videos). I recently shot. Wedding but found I hate quite noises footage. I used a histogram and it look good to me yet footage has noise in the shadows. Any tips? What’s highest ISO you would use? Thank you again for amazing content!
@CameraGeeks
@CameraGeeks 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe! A histogram is good for measuring exposure but not as an indication of noise levels. It’s all about iso levels. Do some test shots at home filming yourself in a darkish room, shoot at every iso level and tell the camera as you change levels. Then look back on a big computer screen and see what is the highest level you feel is still acceptable. For me when I was shooting on the GH5, 800 was okay and 1600 was acceptable at a push. Anything above that, I would never consider. Also, if you’re using nd filters, make sure you don’t have one on by mistake when shooting in dark conditions…an easy mistake to make! Hope that helps, Ben :)

I was thinking about getting a Panasonic GH5s (I will do more video than photography). Should I get a GH5 instead, because of the image stabilization? I know the GH5s does better in low light, but some other videos suggested that if I use a speed booster and sigma lens, I can offset that deficit in the GH5...? Also, what will getting the optional v-log for GH5 gain me? I think initially, I will be going out into the field to shoot videos to promote tourism, videoing myself for online content, shoot some event video, etc. In your opinion, should I get the GH5 or the GH5s, or Should I wait until the GH6 is released, so I can see if the GH6 has better features/specs for the price? Any idea when the GH6 will be released, and what the price and specs on it will be?
@CameraGeeks
@CameraGeeks 3 жыл бұрын
Hey dude. Both are amazing cameras and reading your intended uses of the camera, it makes it a really tough decision! Buying a GH5 with Speedbooster and Sigma 18-35mm will achieve strong low-light performance...not at the same level as the GH5S but still good enough for most situations. The added bonus of having IBIS is pretty important, especially if you are wanting to shoot handheld a lot. Weddings probably present the darkest shooting situations you are likely to encounter and the combo I described works just great. In terms of the GH6, I'm sure it will be a pretty special camera. I don't reckon it will be released until at least early 2021 so it depends how long you are willing and able to wait. Hope that helps! Ben
@CameraGeeks
@CameraGeeks 3 жыл бұрын
Also, V-log will be useful if you intend to apply heavy colour grades and get the maximum dynamic range possible but personally, it's not something I tend to use myself as I only apply a subtle colour grade to my footage.

You can do...you would just need to add some contrast and saturation in the edit. However, if you're shooting in a controlled lighting environment and need to shoot and edit quickly, you might even get away with using "Standard" and avoiding the need for any colour grading in the edit.

@CameraGeeks
@CameraGeeks 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Nicholas. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the sub! These settings should work great. I'd just shoot at a high aperture number for a wide depth-of-field to keep as much in focus as possible. Rather than going for a cinematic look, you'd want everything in the frame to be visible and sharp. For commercial work I'd go for the sigma 18-35 with a speedbooster. You'll find a review here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ib2XrMuoqZ-0eGw.html. I didn't like it for weddings because of the heavy weight but for corporate work, where things are a bit more controlled it's perfect as offers a versatile focal range and a 1.2 aperture! You'll find a link beneath that video. You'd just need a speedbooster (adaptor) too as it's not a native lens. Hope that helps! Ben

I was referring only to the autofocus and not the camera in general. The continuous AF (for video) is not great but the single AF is. The GH5 is one of the best cameras for video and that's the main reason I bought it myself. I think most people would agree that video autofocus is it's one weak point, where it falls short of Sony and Canon.

You don't shoot 10bit on this camera? Why not just shoot on a G85 or something else? GH5 is many things, 10bit has to be up there with the IBIS. Otherwise, there are better cameras cheaper that shoot 8bit better.
@CameraGeeks
@CameraGeeks 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Chris. I don't shoot 10-bit at weddings because I'm really happy with the results I've been able to achieve in 8-bit simply by nailing good exposure and white balance. I never apply a strong grade so I rarely need a lot of latitude in terms of pushing the colours. Also, a typical wedding is 300Gb so if I film the whole day in 10-bit, that goes up to 450Gb. I may test out 10-bit for some of the "couple session" shots in the future. I do have to disagree about shooting on the G85 if not using 10-bit. There are still many other advantages with the GH5 - dual card slots, unlimited record times, no crop when shooting in 4K, better ergonomics. I'm definitely not shooting down the G85 as it's still a fantastic camera (I own one myself) but the GH5 has got a lot more than just 10-bit as an advantage.
