This is a side by side comparison of the Panasonic GH5s and the Arri Alexa Mini using three tests: noise, codec, and banding.
The purpose of the test is to truly see how much of a difference there is of the GH5s and Alexa Mini when technically picked apart. You can also find the shorter 2 minute version of the video here for a quick review:
• Panasonic GH5S vs Alex...
SETTINGS:
- GH5s: V-Log, UHD 4K, 10 Bit 422 All Intra, Varicam V-Log to 709 LUT applied in Premiere
- Alexa Mini: Rec 709, UHD 4K, Pro Res 4444 (XQ), no LUT applied in Premiere
- Alexa Mini: ARRIRAW, Open gate 3.4K, LogC2Rec709 LUT applied in Premiere
LENSES:
-Noise Test: Lumix 12-35 zoom on GH5s, Zeiss Super Speeds on Arri Alexa
-Codec and Banding, Zeiss Super Speeds on both GH5s and Arri Alexa

We are seeing a comparison between a 53000 $ Camera and a 3000 $ Cam. Though the Alexa footages look more organic to me, it´s really impressive how the GH 5s images look like. Thank you for sharing that, CineGal.

Alot of harsh comments...I thought it was a cool comparison video. Thank You for the time and effort to make. I think we are at the point in cameras where people just need to evaluate and get what works best for them. I have a Canon SL2 and the Panasonic G7 with Metabones - thats fine for me. I use SL2 when I need bang on auto focus and the G7 when I need 4k detail or crop (which is rare) The GH5s is something I have had my eyes on but I just dont "need" it. BUT, your video helps me see a test that I would otherwise have to do myself post purchase so thanks!

haha, this is a Panasonic sponsored channel. look at their videos dude. the gh5 didnt come anywhere near the alexa footage and it started banding even when bringing the gamma down a bit, no crazy curves. It wasn't what you saw, it was what you heard that is making you feel the way you're feeling.

In the end, for the average person "on KZfaq". No one's going to buy an ARRI compared to a GH5s. If you plan on buying something that huge, you wouldn't be debating on buying a GH5s. Because in almost every case, a person who is buying a ARRI camera would have a camera similar to GH5s already. So my guess is that, this video is sponsored or caters to the GH5s.

What an amazing comparison. Thank you CineGal. While I'm absolutely sure the Alexa Mini has other bangs & whistles to justify costing more than 10 x the price of the GH5s I am absolutely astounded to see Panasonic's commitment to quality and how with nearly every firmware upgrade they constantly increase the performance ceiling of their GH series cameras. And they do it at such an incredibly affordable price to the purchaser. This can only be a good outcome for the film industry. I've progressed through the GH3, GH4, skipped the GH5 because Panasonic blew me away with their G9 (after firmware v2.0) so much so that it has a permanent home in my backpack. Even before this review I had made up my mind to acquire the GH5s after having used it as a loaner from a friend for a couple of weeks. I like the GH5s' low light video performance. It is bloody good for a M43.

Really nice to see women making cinematography videos!!! This is nicely done. Spending a lot of money on a cinema camera is getting harder and harder to justify. I bought an FS7 back in 2015, and I’m still thrilled with the image. And there’s really nothing out there that’s tempting me away. Now, with the addition of ProRes RAW, I suspect I’ll be happy for another couple years. Plus, my A7sII and Gh5 kick ass for those times when a smaller camera, or more specialized shots are needed (read: low light with the A7sII). Looking forward to more from you.

So awesome. Thanks for doing a comparison I was very curious about.. something other than just the onslaught of lowlight videos online, lol. Maybe it’s a grading thing, but the clip with the coffee - I REALLY see the robustness in color with the Alexa in the internal PR 444 codec that the GH5S just doesn’t seem to best at all. The chrome, the vivid allure of the cup. It’s a very rich image where as the GH is pretty bland when you compare. Still we’re talking $2500 vs $40,000, lol. So it’s okay I suppose haha
@CineGal
@CineGal 6 жыл бұрын
Jeremy Woods I'm sure with an actual colorist color grading the footage, they could get it closer to the colors of the Alexa. But since I wasn't testing color, I didn't do that.
@rossawilson01
@rossawilson01 6 жыл бұрын
4:4:4 isn't for increasing saturation and making S-curves, it's for when you change the colours which is what you do in colour grading. Contrast and saturation extremes aren't going to demonstrate any difference between 4:2:2 and 4:4:4. It's extra colour information per pixel that allows you to shift hues without creating artefacts or getting inconstant colour. It's that and dynamic range is what you're paying for in the Alexa as well as functionality, usability, reliability, which is what a thousands of dollars per day shoot requires. Beyond that the Alexa has a far more film like look where as the GH5 looks like video by comparison. Noise isn't usually an issue either when you're lighting your productions. In a way it's like comparing an F1 race car to a family saloon for going to the shops. You're not going to see much of the benefits for the F1 race car, put the GH5 in a serious production and it's going to loose out very quickly. Not that you can't do it, but it's just not going to give anywhere near the same performance. I'm always miffed when I see people shooting corporate events, Vox pops etc on an Alexa mini, it's literally not understanding what tool is best suited to what job.
@gsherlock
@gsherlock 6 жыл бұрын
Interesting comments Ross but there are a couple of things. After a couple of days of shooting with either a RED or Alexa I'm not sure I'd say they were more useable than an adapted mirrorless or DSLR camera. The size and weight of a smaller camera packages means it is sometimes the better tool for the job and thats often the reason that something like a GH5 will be selected. Built up with accessories and batteries a full production camera (about 30KG) is heavy and unwieldy and I know if I was shooting without an assistant because of budget I wouldn't choose to use one just for the sake of it. Fact is the Panasonic cameras are serious tools now often used as B or C cameras on professional productions and frankly I'm grateful that I have more options open to me as a filmmaker, its not wise to take an elitist and esoteric view of equipment. Lastly, I'm not sure why you are miffed about what camera other people use to shoot whatever it is they are shooting, surely thats their business.
@rossawilson01
@rossawilson01 6 жыл бұрын
Im not sure you got the gist of my post Gavin. Yes a full production camera is heavy and often you require an operator along with A/Cs with various add ons, that's my point. That's where it makes sense to have someting like an Alexa suited to that set up if you can afford it, in that sense it is far more usable for the camera crew and is far better for standing up to on set rigours of a full 40 day feature shoot etc. Not only that but used properly the codec and sensor do provide a lot more information than the GH5. Even small advantages on certain projects can make a huge difference. That's not to say the GH5 is not a serious tool, I never said that. It's a different tool, that's what I said. A different tool for a different job or a particular area of a job. Im not sure why you think my views are elitist when this was my specified point. And of course it's their business what filmmakers use to shoot on. It doesn't preclude me from being miffed, that it's their business is a given. I'm sure some have very good reasons for using an Alexa to shoot Vox pops or whatever. I also know from experience others don't, they are the elitists who want to use an Alexa because of the brand, because they think no matter what it's the best. That's why I'm miffed.

Does anyone have any examples of the alexa actually being that much better other than to say 'its much better'? I don't doubt that it is but it would be interesting to actually see a side by side comparison where you can clearly see the difference as opposed to some slight slight difference.

You could watch any of the multitude of GH5 videos on ebay then go to the cinema and watch something, more info on what shot on what here: www.indiewire.com/2018/02/oscars-best-cinematography-cameras-lenses-2018-nominees-1201929841/ The specs do tell you a lot, for a start the GH5 can't record in 12bit, the Alexa can. As I stated in the original comment you need to know how to use those bits, some people don't. Alexa has a much faster sensor readout speed so there's less "jello effect". Dynamic range is considerably better: www.cinema5d.com/panasonic-gh5-lab-test/ Like it or not we live in world where a £50k industry standard camera that the worlds most skilled cinematographers demand unsurprisingly provides considerably better image quality (at lease technically) than a £2k prosumer camera. Seems pretty logical to me. None of that has to matter however, it depends on the overall look of the picture you like balanced with what you need to do with the image afterwards in terms of flexibility. I love the way the Alexa looks, although there's a lot of applications I'd use the GH5 for over it when the Alexa look or extra info isn't necessary.
@justinparker716
@justinparker716 6 жыл бұрын
Those arent apples to apples comparisons though. The movies in the cinema have top of the line lenses lighting set design and any number of other elements to make an image look better. I know the alexa has better stats and is better overall but I'd love to someone to prove how much better the picture actually is by doing something more than saying 'a 50k better is obviously better than a 2k camera' or 'it has better dynamic range'. Yes I know it has better dynamic range, but how much better, and actually show it to me so I can decide how much better I think it is.

It's cool to see this side by side. I picked my first camera based on price. It's not bad but the one time I wanted to push blues out of the sky the codec fell apart. So my next camera was purchased based on codec and yes, price. Lol. I don't have a ton of cash for cameras as I'm a location sound guy first. Still I'm so much happier with the latitude I'm getting in post now. Totally the way to buy a camera is based on image and also codec as codecs give so much to post.

Hi Cinegal! Thanks for your testing!! I believe your Adobe Premiere Banding Test is not telling everything because Adobe Premiere is known for showing video in 8bit as long as you don't have a 10bit monitor connected to a 10 bit capable output. Since you were showing us screenshots I believe it's all in 8bits, isn't it? Still the banding comes very late for 8 bits and it doesn't desturb the rest of your beautiful test, especially the noise test!

I think that the main difference of both cameras is that one cost x20 the other '^^. the low light capability I think that is not a huge thing to take in count in a hight end cinema camera due to you are always going to iluminate your location in all kind of projects where you can effort this camera. anyway I liked a lot this comparison it's great to see that a 2.500$ camera can be compared with a 45.000$ camera. this days when only a few people could acces to material for making movies have ended :D

I would definitely say yes. The GH5s should work extremely well in the available light in your typical club. Panasonic lens with OIS is def great, but depending on what you're shooting you may want to consider getting a gimbal stabilizer like the Zhiyun crane. Most of the stabilizers at that price point are going to be adequate.

Obviously you do know your stuff when you show the difficult water and leaf footage and of course gradients. Probably the best review I have seen to demonstrate the strength of the GH5s. So much hype about the Sony stuff but people fail to admit that all those Sony ultra low light full frame products are recordning 8 bit 420 which to me is a non starter. If all I get is 8 bit then who cares how good at low light and how big the sensor is. I may have missed wether you used a speed booster on the GH5s . If not then I would think you would see some difference in performance. The full size HMDI, 10 bit 4K, decent low light, and BIG BIG deal... unlimited record length make the GH5s a category killer in my opinion. The image quality does compare nicely to many higher priced cameras and I think if you throw on a speed booster you will have a great camera. As long as it is reliable I think this is a great option. Very very good focused review. The Alexa is great but for a ton more money. I guess if you need raw it is the way to go assuming you have the money.

Hi. Thanks for this comparison. I have a question which is unrelated to the tests. Regarding the pan left/right we often see a judder rather than a smooth pan. I always notice this on slider moves which is just where I don't want to see it. And I'm referencing uploads to KZfaq and Vimeo. I assume that this hadn't been your focus because you've tested other fundementals. But do you have any enlightened thoughts on how to avoid the "pan-judder" ? Is it down to file specs for uploading and compression either pre and or post upload? Subscribed (just now).
@CineGal
@CineGal 6 жыл бұрын
Avidcomp The first fix is simply to slow down the pan. The second is to shoot at higher frame rates, but that doesn't help when you need that 24p look. And yes, KZfaq and Vimeo make the pans look a lot worse than they are.

Thanks CineGal. If you have a moment I wonder if you could take a look at a clip from a film I made for my local community. If you start at 14:20 and play through to 14:42, you'll see a slow pan across framed photographs. In terms of the shudder effect, it looks awful. I shot on a 7D. Currently my kit hasn't been unpacked since I recently moved to the UK, so for now I can't access my project to see what settings I exported the file to upload to Vimeo. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Here's a link to the film:- vimeo.com/146970236 As soon as I get up and running again, I shall get some tests done and try to resolve this hiccup.

Really cool to see this comparison... I recently got the GH5S and still trying to get a feel for the best high ISO settings with Vlog. Apparently the native ISO for Vlog on the GH5S is 800 or 5000 so I was hoping you'd punch it up to see how 5000 looked compared to say 3200 where it would I guess have switched back to a cleaner ISO at 5000 again. From other tests it looks like the further above the native ISO you go it starts to apply heavier noise reduction so still trying to determine the sweet spot where noise is cleanest but NR isn't reducing detail as well. Thanks for the video... look forward to seeing more ;)
@CineGal
@CineGal 6 жыл бұрын
I actually shot noise tests in V Log and Cine D as well. You can definitely push Cine D higher into the ISOs more so than V Log. I'll be posting those tests as well. And I'm not sure about the native dual chip being different for V Log. I think it's either 400 or 2500. Where did you get 800 and 5000 for V Log native ISOs?
@mrjonkane
@mrjonkane 6 жыл бұрын
CineGal I hope I was reading it correctly but over on this Panasonic site it mentions that the dual native iso switches to 800 & 5000 in both HLG or Vlog profile: www.lumixgexperience.panasonic.co.uk/news/overview-of-the-technical-features-of-the-lumix-dc-gh5s/
@CineGal
@CineGal 6 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Houldsworth Thanks for sharing. Yeah, I read that. That's really interesting considering that V log doesn't handle the high ISOs as well as Cine D in the noise. I wouldn't think 5000 is the native for V log in the upper ranges. But I have those higher ranges tested in footage. I just didn't present them in this video since I was only comparing to the Mini that only goes up to 3200.
@mrjonkane
@mrjonkane 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah it does seem strange... I just went and ran a test with lens cap on to see noise at different levels in Vlog. With ISO set to 'Low' in the menus it was cleanest at 400 then just got gradually stronger up to 1600. Then changing it to 'High' in the ISO menu setting I started at 1600 which was then equivalent of 400 in the Low setting... it then got noisier up to 3200 where it suddenly goes even cleaner than 400(low) or 1600(high), as if it's hit native or applied stronger noise reduction. It then stays almost as clean up to and including 5000, after which it gradually gets noisier again. So yeah I'm not sure what that means yet but surprising results. I didn't try the full run through with menu ISO set to 'Auto' but might try that later too.
@CineGal
@CineGal 6 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Houldsworth I do know that keeping it at auto is best for noise because then the camera is deciding which chip to use at the different ISO settings. I.e. if you have it set to low, then crank the ISO, you are pushing the 400 native chip rather than letting the camera switch to the 2500 chip when it's best to do so. Auto lets the camera do that for you.

I think this is a custom Panasonic "flavor" of H.264, because many editors (Adobe Premiere, MAGIX Vegas, etc...) had to be upgraded to be able to open and edit GH5 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 files.

Nice comparison! The banding is not good in the GH5s (something I hate in my GH4 a lot as well). But then again, the Arri Alexa Mini is much more expensive (so yeah...you get what you pay for). The Panasonic GH5s is a really good camera for the price you pay currently on Grey market channels (around 2K) while the body price of the Alexa mini is around 45k (and then you need a LOT of expensive accesoires in order to get the Alexa shoot ready). Either the GH5s is almost too cheap or the Alexa is a bit too expensive for what each camera offers :-) . But in the end they are two different camera's with different purposes. It would be nice to do the same test again when the Sony A7S III will come out (A7S III vs Alexa Mini).

How did you manage to have basically no noise with the GH5s at 3200?
@VariTimo
@VariTimo 5 жыл бұрын
Light and KZfaq compression. Pull the sharpness down and don’t overdo the internal noise reduction and you’ll be fine with ISO 2500 in most dimly lit situations. Don’t be afraid to got higher if you can’t keep the important parts of the image above 30 IRE. Noise is only bad at around 25 IRE which will be hidden the shadows anyway after you grade the image.

Sony's 8 bit is absolutely incredible. Many comparisons with the 10 bit on the GH5 vs the sony 8 bit files is almost no difference. I don't know if it's better on the GH5s though. Sony has a great 8 bit, and Panasonic has a poor 10 bit.
@StephanFleet
@StephanFleet 6 жыл бұрын
There is no such thing as good or bad 8 or 10 bit. These are constants. 8 bit = 2^8 while 10 bit = 2^10. One simply has higher color resolution than the other. On top of that, Sony shoots 4:2:0 vs GH5 and GH5s shooting 4:2:2, thus you are dealing with much more color blocking in the Sony. There are other factors that may make one look better than the other, and up until the GH5s, Sony def had a cleaner noise profile. But from a strictly technical standpoint, the codec and capture method of the GH5 is far superior. I actually prefer the look of my Sony camera most of the time, and shoot a lot of my stuff Sony. But when it comes to green screen, the technical numbers matter. I've done extensive testing and the GH5 is better.

I'd be interested to see a comparison between the GH5s 4K All-I 400Mbps vs 4K IPB 150Mbps, panning shots in particular. The All-I 400Mbps mode sinks most of its bitrate into redundant details common between adjacent frames. IME, high-bitrate IPB modes can often produce more detailed I-frames than All-I codecs when shooting highly detailed motion.

I have a gh5s. And an older gh4. And an old shogun. The dual ISO feature on the gh5s is nice. And its new sensor does give a big low light improvement over prior higher pixel count sensors. It's good. 400mbit 4k/10bit 422 vlog internal is a big feature addition. Comparing it to prores I've recorded on the shogun I'd say it's close enough to mix and match for color grade with the old gh4. I really don't see any difference. Though you need to convert gh5s internal output into a suitable intraframe codec for editing. But this thing ain't no Alexa. Or Red. Or even C200MkII. Take your pick. It's good. I mean, you can shoot interviews, little commercials, corporate with the thing rigged out. But it's not a $10,000 camera. Much less a $50K one. Philip Bloom seems to have his panties tied up over the Chinese Kinfinity camera he got. If real support can hit Europe and the US that thing might give Red some real competition.

Great review, any thoughts on the GH5 vs GH5S?
@CineGal
@CineGal 6 жыл бұрын
NYLA Films Yes, the GH5 is great if you are doing gimbal work or hand held. The internal stabilization is helpful with that. But forget about mounting it to a car or any vehicle for that matter. The internal stabilization can't handle the vibrations at all. Even if you turn OFF the stabilization. And, the GH5 isn't a dual ISO camera, so the GH5S is going to be better in low light.
@genjii931
@genjii931 6 жыл бұрын
Also a slightly wider angle of view on the GH5s due to the multi-aspect sensor, which is a nice bonus. And better color science. And if you want 10-bit 4:2:2 UHD 60p on the GH5, you'll have to record externally. The GH5s is a brilliant addition to the line. I wouldn't mind external raw recording with the GH6/s, though, or internal prores, though if they can just do internal ND and global shutter, I'd choose those instead if I had to. Panasonic announced the development of an 8K GS sensor with on-sensor ND the other week, so that tech IS coming.

Try using the GH5s (or even the GH5) with HLG, if you are not using an external recorder it will be way better then VLog-L Why? Because the VLog-L uses a Rec709 color space, where the VLog (the original one for all Varicams) uses Rec2020, but the HLG uses the Rec2020 straight out of the box, so lots less banding and color errors.
