Great video mate! A few years ago I had this camera and I really enjoyed using it and especially the great video results it produced. I unfortunately sold it to make funds for a long term trip. But in my heart as I travelled the world, I never forgot this camera. Fortunately a few weeks ago I was able to pick one up again in mint as new condition for roughly $270 AUD/170 Euro. So I'll definitely be capturing more memories of my future travels. Keep up the great work! Regards from Australia

longtime GX85 owner/user/fan. thanks for the effort and the sharing. you did not mention the wonderful 4k time lapse feature which i use often. yes, an audio input would have made this camera a legend. as is, it is still very capable. perhaps in another YT vid, you can share some of your settings. i do not shoot in cine-d but standard. using standard and depending on the scene, i can probably lift the shadows 2-ish stops.

I have a GX85 and G85. Purchased inexpensive cages for them from Aliexpress and attach 7inch monitors that helps immensely with accurate focus and framing checks. For production bang for buck you can get almost three of these for the price of one GH5. My logic is having the ability of multi cameras recording simultaneously with different angles/framing and lenses etc even at 8bit is a better advantage than having just one 10bit camera at the same cost.

Great video. Got this camera for a bargain price on Facebook marketplace. Yet to really explore it fully, but frustrating that they seem to purposely leave out features like the fully flip up screen and mic out. I added the cinilike profiles before viewing this video and it was very easy btw.

Controversial opinion from a behind the camera 99% of the time person: i hate the flip out to the side screen. Its in the way for low angle photos and when filming its also in the way. Vlogging is kind of a niche thing and because some people want that screen, everybode has to suffer it...
@TheBudgetFilmmaker
@TheBudgetFilmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
I see where you are coming from. I am also a 99% behind the camera person, I only use the front facing for my youtube videos, but I always liked the flip out more since it's easier to turn than the only-tilt screens, which are a bit more stiff. I use an S1 as my main camera and I find it more cumbersome to tilt up than with the easier flip-out on my GH5. They turn all the way down for high up angles, unlike the much smaller rotation of the tilt screen, which are hard to see from down below because of the tight angle. That's just my experience, but to each their own. Tilt screens are definitely sturdier than flip out screens, so they have some advantage over flip out screens. But for me personally, I would choose a flip out any day.

There is one thing that I am confused about. Would appreciate your explanatino. What difference will I see in the 12-32mm lens or 14-140mm lens compared the very expensive one that you have in your link which is the Sigma 18-35mm (apart from I guess the 1.8 aperture)? That sigma lens looks huge and bigger than the 300mm, what is all that bulk on the lens that only has a max 35mm magnification? I am confused about what a lens that is more expensive than the camera can deliver. Thank you so much for a great video.
@TheBudgetFilmmaker
@TheBudgetFilmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment, much appreciated! It is primarily the aperture, but also the very clean and high quality imagery even when wide open. Combined with a Speedbooster, the Sigma 18-35 becomes an 14-25 f1.2 on MFT! So you get a lot of shallow depth of field with this lens. Yes, it is heavy, limited in range and expensive, but the images are gorgeous. You don't buy such a lens for flexibility, but for its look and IQ. The Panasonic lenses are also amazing, but serve a completely different purpose. They are lightweight travel companions with a very usable range, espc the 14-140 is great for getting all kinds of shots. But you never get the same image out of that lens, than what I would get out of the Sigma. I hope I could answer your question.

My only gripe with that camera has nothing to do with the camera itself, and everything with me. I love the image quality for the price and wanted to buy some of the Meike MFT Cine lenses. It's a fantastic lens, but I underestimated the weight. Paired with this camera it is just to unbalanced to use without some sort of rig, which of course defeats the purpose of such a tiny camera. Sadly the Smallrig cage is not available any more... Currently I use a 3d printed Camera Grip from eBay for better handling. .. GX80 (16) and GH5 (20) have DIFFERENT sensors!! ;-) (btw, gx80 can be programmed to use NTSC)
@TheBudgetFilmmaker
@TheBudgetFilmmaker 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I am aware of that and never stated anything different. I was referring to the GH4, which uses the same 16MP-sensor as the GX80. I misspelled it while recording on accident and added the "*GH4" when I made that mistake. I shot my feature on the GH4, not the GH5. That's also why I am comparing the different sensor performance regarding dynamic range and low-light. Yes I heard you can change that, but for european users it's not ideal since you loose the PAL-framerates. But if one doesn't need them it's a very good option.
@DerSchaddan
@DerSchaddan 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheBudgetFilmmaker My opinion on this is that it's worth it to change it to NTSC. 30/60p is ideal in my opinion for online Content. Most if not all Monitors have a refresh rate of multiples of 30, regardless of what region you are in, so playback will be smoother on KZfaq etc. then with PAL frame rates. I doubt that a lot of users of this particular camera are doing broadcast work or tv series of sorts, that would benefit from 25p standard. And the differences between 25p and 24p is minuscule anyway. Most films are shot in 24p and you don't see people with PAL TV's complaining about it :)
@TheBudgetFilmmaker
@TheBudgetFilmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. I get that point, has been made by a lot of KZfaqrs. Still, I like to stick with 25p, since many features are not possible in 24p on other cameras, like 50p, respectively 48p. It's only a matter of time until this changes. But at the moment, when I do projects, I must keep a consistent framerate since I don't want to hassle with framerate conversion. But then again, I work with a lot of different cameras, this can differ a lot from shooter to shooter. If you only use the GX80, then the hack is absolutely worth it. It's just not for me.

Yes, natural is way more pleasing and less work. But CinelikeD works fine in 8Bit, I never had a broken image with that profile. Log on the other hand requires 10Bit to work well.

I've had mine for a few years now, and completely agree. It can act as a B cam for a GH camera, especially in 4k. The 1080p is a little thin, but still useable in short stints. Cinelike D is okay if used by itself, but the cinelike D from the GH cameras is better quality. Even at the same settings, the GX85 cinelike D isn't quite an exact match. Interestingly, the GX85 has better high ISO than the GH4. The real tradeoffs come with handling. It really needs a grip to be comfortable (for me) and if you're used to the multiple function buttons of a GH camera, it can be tricky having to use the touchscreen.

I absolutely agree with your findings, it's great for what it is. I also find the Cinelike-D a bit off in terms of color, but it's also not my favourite profile on the GH cameras. The skintones are hard to get right without a proper LUT or tool like Filmconvert. I must say that I was surprised by how easy it is to operate. I don't really miss any button or dial, but I guess that depends on the personal shooting styles. Of course a grip is nicer to hold, but I think the form factor is what makes this camera special and good looking.

@@TheBudgetFilmmaker It's been a year, and I moved my GX85 from Cinelike D back to Natural, and I prefer the colours now. A couple of months ago, I got the JJC grip, which improves the handling immensely, and it still looks awesome. I sometimes pair the GX85 with the G9 or S5 (I upgraded from the GH4), and with a bit of colour grading, they can match pretty well. This weekend, I'll be out shooting Christmas lights with the GX85 and S5. Fun times. Have a good weekend!

We all have different needs for our gear and the amount of time we spend working on our work in post ... For me, quite frankly, any camera without a microphone in is not going to be used for video. Yes, if you have time you could synch external audio in post.. but I don't have that time and I require good enough audio directly as I film and for this I have either a lavilier microphone or a shotgun microphone mounted on my G80 (note G80, not GX80) with it's audio input. Please also note: I do not vlog. Why do I not have time to synch up audio in post and why do I not bother with all this color grading? I am a university lecturer who pre-records some lectures and I would rather get the lighting good enough and the audio good enough directly, edit out pauses or whatever and upload with as little, in my opinion, mucking about more with sound and visual image quality. My students much prefer the "quality" of my pre-recorded lectures over live lectures via Zoom. So . ....if this camera had microphone in then for me it would be a "video camera" since it is only with sound and visuals that you get video. The small size is not appealing except for photography and I have a GX9 😀. Hope you do not find this too critical but you did ask what viewers thought. 😀

No not at all, I agree with your thoughts. As you said everyone has different needs. I see is as a camera you have with you all the time to quickly grab some sequences, not for lectures and other long-form events and interviews. If you need audio the G90 or G80 are better choices. And I also did a shootout between the GX85 and the GH2. The GH2 lacks the stabilization but has an audio input. It only costs 150€, so it could be a better and cheaper alternative for people in need of audio.

@@TheBudgetFilmmaker like the GX9 that I have, it lacks a flippy screen. What you wrote is also true, as long as your mouth is close enough (50-70cm) to the built-in microphones the audio is 'ok' and works. And I have been behind my camera and filmed and "narrated" what the viewer will be seeing once everything is done. But for me that is such a niche use. So I use my GX9 mostly for stills and my G80 mostly for video (and for photography when the weather is not so good). [Addendum: I have used the GX9 to handhold film and narrated the viewer through my G80 set-up, so yes it has its uses 😀]

Thanks for this great presentation. I'm a complete novice and only just started to experiment with the GX9. I found the CineD created too much grain and a slightly cloudy look. My preference was the CineV which created a better contrast for me. Still learning. I've just subscribed. Check out this example video of some coastal views: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ga-HiLKj052RaXU.html

Glad you liked it. CineD is nice if you have enough experience color grading. It definitely needs some work. The other profiles are much easier to handle, absolutely. Cine-V is also nice, I used it a lot on the GH4.

I have had this camera for 5 years…..then came along my Samsung S8 phone. On a whim I did video and photo comparisons and I was shattered….S8 was as good and frequently better quality than the Gx85 and 10 time easier to use. In fact I find the camera a pain in the &@$ to use. Waaaaaay too many useless feature crammed in for marketing. My current S20 far surpasses the gx85 in picture quality and video quality. Sans telephoto work of course. I have lost faith in any camera values now for70% use cases. Selling my Nikon 5300 and this GX85.
