The GX85 is still going strong. Why? What makes it so special? Why do some prefer it over the Sony 6000 series that have a bigger sensor? It's not picture quality. Not camera size. Not weight. What then? Find out as two classics are compared side by side. Enjoy!

I personally also find tremendous value in the GX85 versus the Sony for stills photography. Lens availability for APS-C on Sony is not nearly as vast as for M43, especially if you don't count the full frame lenses that would make the Sony's heft significantly more than the GX85. I'm a FF shooter (Nikon) who just bought the GX85 after this struggle between Sony and the Lumix. I have an a6000 but lens choices are there, but not in some of the small form factors available in M43. For example, I wanted the smallest package to have with me all the time. The kit lens is about the same size as the Sony kit, but the 14 and 20mm M43 pancakes are just tiny and have apertures of 1.7. I know there are Sigmas with apertures as large as 1.4, but the 16mm lens is quite hefty compared to a 14mm or 20mm 1.7 Panasonic lens. If lens size didn't matter, I too would probably choose Sony, but not without image stabilization built in, which also drives price upward significantly. For me, the GX85 was best value, best feature and best size combined in one options. I will buy larger lenses, but when size is the ultimate goal, nothing really beats it with 14mm 1.7, 20mm 1.7, 25mm 1.7, 42.5mm 1.7 or 45mm 1.8 Olympus. Those lenses are just so tiny that carrying it is a pleasure and tucking it away and not being "that photographer over there" is awesome. I don't need the world to see me out and about looking like a pro carrying my heaviest Nikon gear. I just need to get the shots, come home and then enjoy without being a distraction, and the GX85 does that for me.

Can't believe you would do a camera review comparing a body with stabilization and one without, and then admit you didn't even try the stabilized camera, and then say it was simply too heavy. Why not just save us the time in the first place and say you hate this camera because it's too heavy. I'm old school. I like heavy stuff.

I bought the GX85 a year and a half ago when I took up photography. I chose it because of the image stabilization and its performance reviews. I like that it has a bit of weight to it. Makes it seem substantial and feels good and n my grip. He should have used it before making a discussion. Sometimes the thing you like least becomes the thing you like best when you spend time with something.

You have this contagious energy when you talk about the things that you love. It's one of the many reasons I subscribed a while back to this channel. Another great thing about those little GX85 cameras is that the slightly heavier weight might actually help you keep it steadier when shooting video.

I love my gx85. It is pretty heavy for the size but, in my experience, it's still lighter with a pro zoom than an ASP-C. Plus, that dual IS means I can shoot handheld without rigging. That makes the camera super light by comparison. But, as you said, it's better for video shooters and that's where my perspective comes from.

Hi Markus! I am Miguel from 2megapixels Channel, content Creator like you, doing specially mobile content, reviews, unboxing, camera reviews.. Normally I film myself with mobiles but recently I bought a Lumix lx15 ( compact camera with flip screen and 4k ) but it is small, I keep having It, but yesterday I bought the Sony a6000 to work with it because my pc is old and not powerfull for work good with 4k files.. So, my question is.. Do you think it's nice option that camera for my type of content? And, I am thinking about to buy the Sigma 16 or 30mm! What do you think is better for this? And ¿ Do you think is a problem to film in 1080/60 instead of 4k un 2021/22? Thanks dude!

Wow - great video. I am heavily leaning on the GX80 or even the GX9 (what do you think of the GX9 - its 20MP instead of 16MP). Is there anything out there that will give me the capabilities of the GX80 but with a better zoom...at one point I was almost about to get the Fz82 all because of the zoom, then I upped my budget since I wanted something that could just about film stars at night and had the 4K 24fps for film style - but I really would like something with more zoom. Maybe you can recommend good zoom lens that is less expensive than the camera itself? Appreciate your advice.

The GX85 is an awesome (big) pocket camera with the 20mm f1.7. Small enough to fit comfortably in a pair of khakis. You can take stabilized pictures in low light with pretty good shallow depth of field. It weighs less than a pound. So it's not that heavy for a stabilized camera with a decent sensor size.

I bought my GX85 over a year ago used for $280 and he threw in a 25mm prime and lens bags and extra batteries and a scorpion jr which ive never used lol. glad to see I got one when the time was right. I shoot music videos on it and nearly all my clients remark on how great the picture is from such a small camera. admittedly it is a brick, but brick beats plastic any day. I'm about to upgrade to a BMPCC, ironically, but you bet the GX85 is going to still be in my edc bag. MFT is win.

We've had the GX80 for years now and it's a great little camera to shoot with. Added a little grip and now it pairs perfectly with the Lumix 25mm f1.7. And if you get mugged, it's heavy enough to bash someones skull and strong enough that you can still finish your photoshoot. The only thing we miss is a mic-in because Pascal keeps forgetting to hit the record button on the audio recorder. Ah well...

Great video Markus. Focused on real practical questions, as always. A good option on m43 is also the Olympus EM10 MIII. Bigger that GM1/5, but still slightly lighter that the GX85, also with 4K, cheap and with an important advantage over the panasonic: 1/250 max flash sync. And if you don´t need the 4K video, you have also the MarkII version that is even lighter and incredible cheap these days if you can find it somewhere trying to clean stock. I usually go with that one plus a couple of small primes.
