Panasonic Leica 25-50mm f/1.7 is here now! does it justify it's price and size? and can it really replace the Leica prime lenses of the same focal length? like the excellent Leica 42.5 1.2 Nocticron? I did some side by side comparison and you may be surprised by the results

Santa came early this year. This lens is everything that I could have wished for. People focus too much on the depth of field, but for me it is the light gathering ability of 1.7 in a zoom that is really useful, and paired with the 10-25 is ideal. Thank you Santa.

As the owner of the Panasonic Leica 10-25mm f1.7 which remains on my Olympus EM1 Mk3 90% of the time, I can only imagine how superb the build and quality of the 25-50mm f1.7 is (which I can't afford after getting the 10-25mm for an arm and a leg!). Even as an Olympus camera owner, I'd say Panasonic definitely hit out of the park with both lenses - truly excellent lenses. Thanks for the wonderful review as usual, Richard.

Hi Jin. I currently have the 10-25mm & a GX9, but am thinking to upgrade to the EM1 III. Does Starry AF work with this combination? Any other thoughts or issues you have noticed? Cheers.
@jinwan3088
@jinwan3088 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrSpeednz Hey Julian, I personally don't use starry AF, but I know for a fact that I could certainly turn on the EM1 III's Starry AF feature with the Panasonic 10-25 lens. I have not noticed any issues at all so far, and truly, the 10-25mm lens is now literally 100% on my EM1 III. It's just such a powerful lens and can do so much, and really did replace a whole bunch of my primes. The only thing you need to realise is the manual Aperture ring on the Panasonic does not work with the EM1 III (but you can easily change Aperture using the dial controls, etc. so I have zero issues there).

This is the first video that has actually given me a reason to consider this lens. I had been considering both the Lumix-Leica 25mm and 42.5mm lenses, and this could replace both with only 30g added weight in the bag. Of course, I was also considering the Sigma 56mm as a possible 42.5mm replacement, and that changes the dynamics. Will give it more thought.

I actually don’t mind the look of the sun stars, especially at f16, in my opinion. I can see myself using this 25-50mm while recording video or stills, for example, at a concert. The lens’ added reach over the 10-25mm would be a benefit when further back from the stage. And the bright 1.7 aperture would be great in low light too. Excellent review, Richard!

Better that the nocticron? Hell no! Though I use both the 10-25 and 42.5 nocticron for 2 cam interviews and at times I could have done with zooming out a touch for better framing. Our next project is a drama series and due to the guerrilla style it will be shot in, the 25-50 makes perfect sense paired with the 10-25 and bgh1.

As a G9 user I will only bite if Pana releases more substantial info on GH6. On that note: The secrecy around new releases (exact specs and timelines) is counterproductive. If I already knew GH6 would be released (month) with the rumoured specs (1.2.3.) I could already make a buying decision, secure budgets and I might also already make a buying decision for this lense - as well as 10-25mm. Withouth this info I might decide for another camera (Sony a7IV) - and then certainly not buy more lenses for this system. I might not be the only one sitting on the fence?!

Hi Richard. Can't believe I only discovered your channel now! Great review as well the one on 10-25. Hope if you don't mind me asking that eternal question of what to get. Welcome advise from other posters too. I am mainly a stills shooter using a GH5 (didn't know they were going to release the G9) and my first panny leica lens was the 25mm f1.4 on a GH3. Always loved it, more than the 17.5mm f1.7 which was my other. But the Nocticron definitely moved things up a notch and I was hoping Panasonic would release an update, bigger diameter 25mm prime. Alas they released 2 zoom lenses with the 25mm at either ends. Which one has better picture quality at 25mm? I already have a nocticron and the standard 12-60mm. I suppose at first glance would be the HX1025 but which gives the best picture at 25mm?
@TheRealRichardWong
@TheRealRichardWong Жыл бұрын
Hi there!! Welcome to my channel! For the image quality, i would suggest you check my image quality test results in the video and decide it yourself :) but if you are deciding between the 10-25 and 25-50, i would really just look at what focal length is more suitable. I think that would make a much bigger difference in real life than the minor difference in terms of image quality at 25mm as they are both really good lenses anyway.
