Since I did my first 'roundup' video on the Panasonic Lumix G9, there have been a couple of major firmware updates and I have two years' more experience. Now there's so much to cover I'm doing it in two parts. Part 1 is about navigating the essential functions on the camera and will be perfect for new users and people about to buy a G9. Keep an eye out for Part 2: all my settings for still photography and how to set them up in the menu.

To make sure you get the most out of these videos, make sure you have the updated 2.4 firmware. Here are the links mentioned in the video:

I originally set the silent shutter mode lever on the lower front to auto bracket exposure but as I always shoot raw files, I find I rarely need bracketing as even with very high dynamic range landscapes, my raw editor program can usually cope with them. So one feature that I absolutely hated when I first bought the G9 was the touch screen as It kept accidentally changing settings so I turned it off completely. Now I have re-assigned the silent shutter mode lever to turn on the touch screen if I need it. Thanks to your videos, I now have my G9 set very comfortably and can shoot much faster without wasting time with camera settings aside from the usual manual exposure control I use. Many thanks.

Very useful, especially to those new to the G9. I’ve had mine 3 years and I’m still adjusting settings and the custom buttons. It makes sense to have AF Near/Far set to Fnc 4 & 5, but I use F4 on its default setting of Point Scope as I use this a lot for wildlife photography, especially with the PL100-400 lens. I look forward to Part 2 👍

Great presentation. I feel the G9's ease of use / total maneuverability with touch interface / the ability to personalize many aspects of the camera, is an often overlooked ' important aspect ' of the G9 - and I imagine other Panasonic cameras are the same in this regard. 6 yrs ago I started in on photography with Sony cameras. Image quality was very good but ' using ' the thing was a real pain ! I jumped ship & bought the Pany FZ 2500 bridge camera which really brought a ' fun / enjoyable factor ' into shooting. Looking forward to vid # 2. I will buy you a coffee.

Thanks Andrew...as usual a very useful video from you, especially since I bought G9 a few weeks back. For scrolling to different pages for each main menu option, I just touch the bar on the right as per page number I need, instead of scrolling down page by page at a time ...makes it faster to get to the required function setting.

Thanks for the very informative videos Andrew. I just bought the G9 and am waiting for it to arrive (shipped today!). Your videos have given me a confidence level already in using the camera. Coming from using Canon DLSR, I am looking forward to the G9 journey.

Another excellent video Andrew. A couple of settings that I have customised: 1. For the I/II switch, I have this set to Exposure Bracketing in position II. This makes it really easy to switch between single exposure and bracketing for when you need it. 2. I set the main dial to adjust ISO and like Andrew have the rear thumb dial for Aperture and the front dial for Shutter. I know Andrew usually shoots in Manual with Auto-ISO but I often shoot in Aperture priority so the ISO adjustment with my thumb makes it really easy to adjust the exposure if and when required.

Hi Brett, yes I shoot in manual but I don't use Auto ISO except for video. For all still shots I set the ISO myself. I tried assigning ISO to the main dial on the back but I had to undo that. I kept on turning it accidentally just carrying the camera around, so at times I would discover that I had been shooting at some crazy high ISO setting for no reason...because I had knocked the dial unintentionally. So that's why I went back to using the ISO button.

@@naturesimagephotography Thanks for the correction Andrew; I did pick up your use of auto ISO on your VFR video. I have found the same issue with accidentally bumping the dial and changing the ISO but I've sort of trained myself to always check the ISO setting so I rarely get it wrong. I wish I was as diligent with every other setting! I've also set my maximum ISO limit so even in the worst case it's not ridiculously high. Keep up the excellent work.

Great video. Is there a replacement for the G9 coming soon? Can you please do run-down of the lenses you use for the G9 and in which scenario? Thanks!

I don't work for Panasonic, I really don't know anything about a successor to the G9. If you look back through my other videos about the G9 you will see which lenses I use and how. At this stage I only have a 100-400mm for wildlife, an Olympus 45mm f-1.8 for portraits, and a 12-60mm for everything else. I do hope to get the chance to try some more lenses soon.

Thanks...I thought you could but I have never done anything with the switch. And this video was mainly about showing people how things work by default. But since you reminded me, I might even look into how I could put the switch to better use.

I use the G2 and 10, before lock down I was tempted to buy the G9, but with not much opportunity for photography now, I am glad I didn't. The only real advantage for me would have been a faster burst mode which I rarely use. Do you think the G9 has a worthwhile advantage over the G2.The more recent cameras have to many bells and whistles that I could easily forget, resulting in missed shots.
@naturesimagephotography
@naturesimagephotography 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry I have never owned a G2 so I can't make that comparison. All cameras have more functions than you will ever use these days, just like almost any software. The trick is to get really good at the functions you need, try out the ones you might like, and just ignore the ones you know you will never use.
