Very helpful video. thanks for making. I am on GH5 and looking to upgrade. What are your opinions on G9ii?

Ive not used it so I cant give an accurate opinion, but if you look up Mike Lanes channel hes been using it, the AF is much better and actually usable in video and it think it has pretty much all the video options of the GH6, but lack the cooling fan. Im holding out for the GH7 for a bit longer!

Having the G9II for some time now I can highly recommend it . The AF is definitely the best for video available in M43 currently. I also considered waiting for the GH7. Because stills is my main use I don't need long recordings. Overheating only occurs in over an hour of continuous 4k 120 recordings on warm days. The G9II is so fully featured for video that I think it would be hard to make the GH7 way more capable.

@@eelco6587 thanks for the info, very useful to know :) Im hoping we can get 240fps in 4k, or even 400/500fps in HD - probably a bit optimistic but you never know! Ive heard rumors of new M43rds sensors, maybe we will get better dynamic range if no improvement on max frame rates. And Panasonic patented an internal ND filter so hopefully that will be for GH7. And if all else fails hopefully the g9 mkii price will drop when gh7 comes out! Have you tried the g9 mkii af on oly lenses with the 2x teleconverter at all? F11 is enough to push the AF on the best of cameras, so would be interesting to see how it copes

@ukwildlife Ok yes that ND could definitely add something as a film feature. Hope they add it to the G9II too. I have used the G9II some time now with the 150-400mm. It does work well, my guess a bit slower than the OM-1 but also more sticky. Never used it with any converters yet. I can give it a try soon. Only my video tripod head is at a clients place as I don't use it as much at home.

@@ukwildlife Just had some time for a non-scientific test of the G9II 150-400mm TC20 combination. Weather was strong overcast, I tried it on a close by object just 10 feet (3 meters) away and a building of around 140 feet away (40 meters). At f11 and 1000mm I tried it with subject detection on. C-AF was slow. Around two or three seconds and had more difficulty to find focus. Than I switch to S-AF, it was still pretty quick for the focal length very usable compared to older generation camera's tele lenses I used with TC's. Than I turned off the subject detection and the C-AF was so much quicker almost meeting the S-AF speed I think. I didn't expect the subject detection to slow down the C-AF performance so much. First conclusion: I would recommend to turn off subject detection with teleconverters and the 150-400. I don't know if this counts for all lenses. The brightest lens I own that can be combined with the TC's is the 40-150mm f2.8. Never compared it with both settings. Maybe even in other demanding situations as well without the teleconverter it is better to turn off the AI detection for the maximum AF speed. I am bit addicted to the AI detection. So maybe it is time to try birding the old fashion way again.

How high do you go with iso when filming in the dark? I shoot mammals.. would like some stills as well, so looking for a companion for my zcam. Maybe I should wait for the z6iii or even better, the a7s4.

I push it up to 1600/3200 for video, don't rate the camera for stills. If you want a micro 4/3rds camera for stills its either Panasonic G9 mkii or the OM system OM1 or OM1 mkii. I believe the OM1s have better noise control by slightly lower MP, and the om1 mkii the best Autofocus for wildlife, though of the 3 Ive only used the OM1. Wirh that I shoot ISO 800/1600 most the time and edit using Topaz denoise. Not used the sony full frames enough to comment on them

@@ukwildlife thanks! I think I have to stick with the M4 or wait for the new Nikon or Sony. I work mostly during Dusk now. Those pesky mammals..

I've used a Zcam E2 and a Sony fx30. The 4k120 on the Zcam is far superior as is the noise control.

@@josephsee2425 I think the 4k 120p on Sony bodies isn't full 4k either and is cropped down on the sensor only too?

With almost 6k on a micro fourthirds the pixeldensity is one of the highest but using for instance the sony fx30 (also 120fps on 4k) the 200-600mm lens would give almost the same amount of reach. 1.6x crop x 600mm vs 2x crop x 500mm. (Sony fx30 also has 1.5x clear image zoom which is equil to the pixel to pixel mode). But the 200-600mm lens is half the price and the sony fx30 has bird eye autofocus. So I wonder is there anything I'm missing which would still make the gh6 the better choise?

I guess its depends on what you need. Will be better for some and not others - The 4k 120fps on the Sony fx30 is crop only and not true full 4k, as opposed to the 4k 120fps on the Panasonic GH6 which is either full frame or 1.5x crop and full 4k resolution. - The FX30 also does not have a fan so is more liable to overheat, and I film dragonflies a lot which involves it sitting in direct sunlight sun - The is properly weather sealed, along with the M43rd lens I use, not sure the FX30 is? - When it comes to reach there is now a 150-600mm Om lens (announced after I recorded this video of course! lol) which works out at 1800mm with the pixel to pixel mode. - lower weight option - I can use the 100-400mm lens, which gives me 1200mm with pixel to pixel and it a total of 1.6kg, or the 300mm prime which is less than 2kg, which again for my use is important, such as trying to film dragonflies handheld Probably not enough to jump brands if you already have Sony set up, but enough for someone already shooting M43rds to look at this camera, and its served me well :) (Also I've somehow missed your channel before now and will go check it out now!)

@@ukwildlife Thank you for the detailed response. I currently shoot with the canon 90d with the 400mm f5.6 and I'm looking for an upgrade. It's true that the 4k 120 on the fx30 is crop, but it uses the 4k part of the 6k sensor (which would equal using pixel to pixel mode on the gh6) So it is true 4k, but you miss the option of oversampeld 4k 120fps. The fx30 does have a fan so doesn't overheat. The weight factor is a good one. The 200-600mm lens is a bit more than 2kg. I will check out the 150-600mm Om lens! My channel used to be dutch with only english subs so maybe that's why u missed it. Nice you joined!

Also to add, the 200-600mm on the Sony is a Bazooka of a lens (LARGE) vs. MFT lenses. So if you are walking around for hours or camping or canoeing (with water proof case) its a lot more to bring with you then MFT.

@@TheDutchBirder oo it does have a fan, good to know. I was eyeing one up as my b roll camera and as a possible larger sensor camera to use with my (canon fit) probe lens but couldn't justify spend that amount of money on it! I have read there were issues with fx30 overheating but also lots of folk saying they've had no issues when I researched it a few months ago. The only 150-600mm is basically the Sigma 150-600mm lens with improved optics so its pretty heavy for a M43rds lens If you are considering m43rds, have a look at the g9 mkii as Mike Lane is using the AF in video mode with some good success and it has most the video feature of the GH6 now. Ive never used it, but might end up getting one if they dont announce the GH7 this year!

@@EmberSkyMedia indeed, though its not too much heavier than the 150-400mm f4.5 I use TBF, but that lens is probably better IQ when I switch to photos for sure
