The mechanism of this machine have a very distinctive half wdith head sliding between two sides of the tape to achieve auto reverse. According to my experiences of refurbishinh this type of machine, I'd say this plasticy mechanism is far more reliable than the more premium oriented dual belt mechanism.

I agree, I have two units with this mechanism, very reliable, easy to adjust, great quality for the money. Only thing I wish they had is auto stop on FF and rewind. I'd rather quality over convenience though

@@WalkmanmaniaThat's true! Playback at the tape end isn't a problem it just auto reverses. And in FF and rew modes it's in your hand, you don't walk away from it so not having auto stop isn't really a big issue

Open the door and toggle the fwd/rev lever you can see the head moves inward/outwards. I'd say this is still not a most optimized design since the sliding head might prone to have azmuth problems after long terms of use. But comparing to the dual belt mechanism, the more traditional belt layout means at least it's more robust to wow and flutter.
