I always get asked about the focus modes I use inside the Panasonic S5, so I thought i'd make a video about it.
Panasonic have included many different focus modes in the Lumix S5 and other Lumix cameras, and sometimes it can get quite confusing as to what one would best suit your use case.
So, in this video, I talk about the different AF modes I use and when I use them when shooting with my Panasonic S5 and Panasonic S1.
I hope this video is useful for some people, especially if you're new to the Panasonic lineup of cameras and are curious on how to get the best AF results in both photo and video mode.

Hey Josh, just wanted to say thanks in the first place for all the helpful and clear videos you deliver. I've switched from my baby G80 to the S5 last year and your videos sped up my learning curve drastically! I'm using my S5 for a very wide array of photo and video purposes, and started working for a running event organisation in my hometown recently. This is where I first got to know sports photography, and the challenges that come with it. Although I've shot a lot of sports pictures I'm really proud of already, I still don't feel like I'm getting everything out of my S5 in the autofocus department. I've tried multiple modes and mostly the ones you mentioned in this video, yet I struggle finding focus on a regular basis with running people. Even when using burst mode I get to a maximum of 20/30% of my shots in good focus. My shutter speed is always well over 1/250 (usually around 1/500) so I feel like something in my AF settings is wrong. Would you have a clue as to what might be going wrong here? I've tried lowering and upping the sensitivity and stuff but that doesn't do much. There's this setting that allows you to focus on half press or on full I believe, and I feel like that's where the issue might be? Would love to get some input on this, I'm deleting so many pictures of an event as we speak and it's frustrating :')

@@ManushJohn Thanks for the reply! Setting it to single feels like a very counterintuitive thing to do though, since the subject is moving and I'm shooting in burst mode. What makes you think that will work?

Thank you for the info, it's much appreciated. I've just got my S5 and kit lens + the bonus 50mm 1.8. Has firmware 2.3 on the camera, I've only ever used single point af on most of my serious cameras and was very concerned about the af going by the reviews saying how it wasn't that great, I was very much relieved when I tried it today. It maybe not Sony A7 iv fast but hey it's not as bad as most of the reviews say.

Nice video Josh. My setup is a bit different but gonna give yours a try to see if I notice a sizable change. I have found that using AF-S in stills gives the best performance and least hunting.

Thanks Josh, enjoying your channel and your approach to your productions, some great advice and guidance from someone actually making a living from photography. I’m on the cusp of buying the S5 as a backup camera to my S1R, lowlight capability and it’s also light weight, it would be a second camera for when out landscape photography hiking it needs to be fairly light. I’m more interested in stills currently, including studio and strobe work but I also think the S5 would be a great camera to learn more videography. It’s a tossup between the S1 & S5. If there’s anything you could say about the S5 that would help me make that choice I’d appreciate it as these things aren’t cheep as you know all to well.

great info! I find that the human detect af unreliable when filming, even when I confirm the focus lock I get the dreaded pulsing now and then. I use 1-Area (Human Detection) instead and I don't need to confirm focus lock that way - works fine 99% of time for me

Interesting, definitly gonna compare these two options and see what works best for me. Maybe the confirm feature is good when multiple person are in the frame to decide which face to focus on?

Dude?! I have a step and repeat tomorrow to cover and was literally playing with focus earlier thinking “Josh probably has a video on this” SPOOKY!! I have single point but FYI on that you can go to single point push up on the cross hair once for human tracking single point and up twice for animal and human single point tracking….find this works the best at -3 sensitivity and 0 speed. Its funny because the af tech seems to be nearly there but then these sudden random pulse hahaha. I was super impressed with af in photos, even when adapting recent sigma ART ef glass. I found myself using Human detect AF. ZONE and pinpoint a lot of the time. Weirdly zone is snappier when I used it. Never really gave a tracking a go...as my previous camera tracking was so bad lol. I will give it a try ;) thx again Josh! Its funny how this little guy does work but you need some patience and time to learn to get the most out of it lol.

Hey Josh! Been looking at your videos to learn how to get used to the S5. I was wondering if you could help with an issue I have. The Autofocus dial to switch between S, C and MF modes are acting strange for me. I would switch it to "C" and the display shows "Switch to AFS." Appreciate your thoughts as to what my problem could be.

Thank you for this video! I recently got this camera but I need to get a proper len for telephoto. I'm very scared with prices, lumix doesn't seem to have a lot of lenses in the market, at least cheap one. I want to get a 70-200mm for this camera but I feel I will need to invest around 2k, while for sony-a7iii or nikon z6 (although they are older) I can probably get an second hand telephoto for less money or maybe it is just a matter of time until lumix or leica release new lenses? What are your thoughts on this? Thank you

I love everything about my S5 aside from the EVF. I use a lot of manual lenses and I wish it was larger and more crisp.

Only had it for a week but do already love this underrated camera, struggling to find a way to change to aps-c for photography (for extra reach). I’ve read the manual, I’ve searched online but can’t find anything on it. Maybe it’s not possible. Thanks for your videos, very informative

There is a menu item named "Ex. Tele Conv." that has to be set to "Tele Conv." Then, set your Picture size to either "M" (for some zoom) or "S" (for max zoom). Note that this only affects the JPEG - the raws are always a full 24MP at the 35mm focal length.

I might be even more of an isolated case as I am considering this camera not only also just for photography but specifically for its baked in aspect ratio option of 24:65 giving you the Hasselblad Xpan look with an appropriate lens . So I am here on youtube hoping to find reassurance that the AF is really good enough for most photography

Hy Josh, I've been following your channel for a few months you were the reason I sold my G9 and finally switched to full frame so S5... Your content is excellent I need focus settings for CarPorn Shootings & Animal Movies all shot in v-log Could you give me the best settings ? Do your lens slide side to side in the mount? all mine do and I'm thinking the camera mount is faulty. a e-mount of the a7s3 is super tight

BTW, there is a way in the firmware to hide the AF modes you don't use, to. shorten the menu. Makes it easier to switch between the three main modes.

Which mode/setting would you use for on a gimbal ? When the subject itself is mostly stationary, but you are moving ? Like various moves (push/pull/orbit) for a music video ? I haven't had the chance to test this scenario out yet, but I'd be interested in your advice.

Hey Patrick! On a gimbal i'd normally use human tracking if it's a music video and then raise up my AF speed and sensitivity slightly :)

i have the s35 1.8 lumix lens and the autofocus works better than the kit lens (maby the best of all lens) especially at face tracking and my settings are speed -1 sensitivity +3

What about shooting at a party with a flash? where is a little bit darker, people are moving? I just got my Lumix S5 (I used a g9 before), and from 350 pictures 100 are out of focus :(, tryied everything, any suggestions from your side is helpfully.

Hi what is the setting I have to use for the Autofocus tracks the eye while filming. I mean if I want the camera to follow the model's eye when I move backward forward and the picture will not be out of focus? I cannot seem to get that. I have set AFC and human detect, but it does not focus automatically only if I press the shutter button halfway down. What am I doing wrong?

"... when I'm photographing fast moving objects like wildlife...", then continues to show a picture of a Scottisch Highlander. Hahaha. I don't think I've actually seen any of them move much beyond moving their head up and down to eat. Great video. I probably should experiment more with the tracking AF. So far I found it tends to drift away from the subject, but maybe its fine for small amounts of motion or short clips.

It doesnt work, with panasonic just learn manual focusing. Everything else is good with the s5.

@@Princeton_James Stay with the A7IV, it is a monster. 33 megapixels is better for photo. Most "S" series Lumix users buy it for the video codecs and features.

S5 has better dynamic range, noise performance and overall image quality since you can also shoot BRAW and ProRes RAW, so defo S5 :)

Basically I use the same but I find that if I make the single point af box too small I get tons of hunting and pulsing. Anyone else? Love the human detect feature on single point.

When you are shooting video, is it in v log? Also, do you shoot video in aps-c mode or full-frame? Both can have a drastic effect on the autofocus

Anyone know how to use the camera to take selfies? I want to get a shot of me and my young son. I've found the setting to get it to take a picture after 10sec but none of the focus modes focuses on us. I have the camera and lens on autofocus but even on tracking or human detect it refuses to focus on us. What am i missing here? The manual didn't help me unfortunately nor did Google. I set the camera on a tripod and then press the shutter to start counting down but the camera refuse to find us in the scene. I press the camera and then pick up my son and stand in front of it. Would really appreciate some help here. On my old Nikon 7000/7100/7500 and my old Pentax k3ii and canon 90d it worked just fine doing it that way but I can't get it to work on my lumix s5

Yes I love street photography with this camera. Bit on the large side though compared to bodies in the Fuji line for example. But for me it’s about versatility, I can do professional video and photo with with it then turn around and go on a relaxing street photography walk. Great camera

All these youtubers talking about panasonic af tracking in video mode as if it's something that's actually working and viable. I can only imagine the frustration out there with users thinking they're doing something wrong.

I use this camera professionally, and i've had a lot of contact hours with every corner of the menus and options that are available. My honest response is that AF tracking does work if you're using a native Lumix lens and have your AF mode set correctly. Would I trust it for my paid work? No - but for hobby shooting and this channel I would :)

@@JoshCameron I mean it also depends on what kind of paid work? I can get it to lock in quickly for stills, i can get it to kind of focus on an area when tilting slowly. But my dog running towards or away from me, that eludes me with this camera. So i suppose it's different if you shoot fashion stills, or film interviews, or shoot sports (my guess is that pros don't rely for af at all for sports, but idk).
