All camera companies are guilty of this nowadays, bottom line is they will sell enough units to break even at worst. 30-40 years ago in the era of film people who wanted to get into photography took advice from retail professionals or the advice of friends or from print media which came about through practical application or testing. These days fan boy reviews made in a few minutes as a reward for a foreign junket are enough to sell 50k units to people who don't know any better.

One of two things must be true: (a) Panasonic has completely whiffed, yet again, with a small/light "content creator" targeted camera, despite learning enough from the G100 debacle to equip the S9 with phase detect/subject-detect AF, IBIS, a no-crop open gate recording option, and a full frame sensor to eliminate any possible criticisms that the sensor is "too tiny and not competitive, might as well use your smartphone." (b) Panasonic knows this market better than the rest of us do, and has given "video content creators" (which excludes KZfaqrs unless you're primarily a KZfaq Shorts creator, then you're in) enough of what they do want for the S9 to succeed despite all its limitations and missing features. I'm going to go with (a) but must also allow for the possibility of (b). What I will say is that today's younger digital camera buyers, to grossly generalize (apologies out there to all you who are exceptions; I'm just sharing what I've seen anecdotally), (a) don't know much technically about cameras and lenses, nor do they care to learn that much, they generally want "better than their phone quality and pro bokeh look", "great colors" (aka Fuji-like), "autofocus that just works", "good in low light", "really easy and simply to use", "can easily get photos to social media without a PC"; (b) are willing to jump from brand to brand in search of "a look" or "a better camera" or "better colors" or "what @fashionista975 said was a good camera" with very little forethought or planning around specific features and/or lenses; (c) in general don't like the handling of larger "DSLR" style cameras and don't like how they feel when large cameras are pointed at them or when they're pointing large cameras at others. Maybe the S9 will be a dream come true camera for TikTokers and Insta Stories and YT Shorts creators. I guess I really don't know. But the S9 is, sadly, a "fail" for traditional-oriented video shooters and photographers. Sucks for us. But I hope the camera succeeds anyway. It would be good to have a healthy L mount and healthy Panasonic income flow to keep competition strong among top OEMs.

I love Incamera LUTs. Why? I am 62 years old, and worked for over 30 years at computers. Meanwhile I hate working on PC or smartphones because my right arm hurts even after only working a few minutes on a computer. So I am very glad, that there are cameras with uploadable LUTs like Panasonic and cameras with inbuilt film simulations like Olympus and Fuji. Since over 20 years I am shooting ooc and especially during the last 8 years the camera industrie made big steps in supporting my way of taking pictures. Hoeever I thank them very much!

This is my first time commenting even though I have been watching your videos for years. I was struck by your not wanting to go to Japan to review the Panasonic Lumix S9. After watching your video on the S9 I watched the PetaPixel review. It was like you and your Canadian counter parts were reviewing different cameras. You could say what you wanted, Jordon and the other shills could criticize a bit but had to be careful not to be too critical or they would not be invited on a free trip around the world again by any camera company. I love that camera companies apparently think that short-form content means that it is automatically filmed short. Which means that their marketing and product idea guys know really nothing about their user base. They only let the engineers and professionals talk into specs when it is a niche product for -like- twenty users, worldwide. But once they think a product is viable for a regular Joe, they completely take over the design decisions. And this channel is basically about calling out incompetent people in charge of business, so I love it, thank you Kasey.

Petal Pixel said the luts are free...almost everything else you said I agree with. I honestly feel that considering how much time they spent showing off the app, their focus is that...the S9 is just the first camera that they are using to highlight their app LUT feature. The manual focus lens is just dumb combined with no EVF for outdoor filming or photography in bright sunlight. Also, those record limits...I'm a long-time Panasonic fan but the S9 is extremely underwhelming.

Thank God somebody else is talking about the 15 minute record limit. It’s a huge problem that will keep a lot of people from buying it. It doesn’t matter how many cool recording modes you have, if I can’t sit down and actually use it in my workflow. The S5II is much much better.

Can’t stand when KZfaqrs says that this is fighting with x100vi. It’s not even in the same category. The Fuji is always clear that it’s a photographer camera first video is a bonus. The s9 you don’t even know where it’s standing. Just becos of the lut it’s immediately compared with Fuji.. 🙄

Don't get me wrong i hate the Panasonic s9 as a release and i agree with everything you said BUT. I think its unfair to compare it with sony zv E1. Panyboy costs like 1600 euro compared to sony zve1 2600 euro (body only). That's 1k difference. It actually directly competes with canon R8 (both low cost full frame cameras and probably XS-20 in that prize range).

This is the first time I know the camera has limits on 4k, the moment I knew it doesn't have a mechanical shutter I closed the video and stop caring, only came here because this is the honest one about everything

Lumix knows what they are doing, they released this handicapped version to garner interest and then in 6-9 months they will release the S92 or X with all those missing features hotshoe, 30 min record limit, maybe mechanical shutter etc. They do this all the time, it was the same thing when they released the S5 without proper working autofocus lol they could've but they instead decided to hold back for a second version to then release it. Im glad more consumers are catching on to their bullcrap and what's hilarious is that you have KZfaqrs like Terrywarfield that is screaming at people who don't like the camera and trying to influence people that the camera makes sense and people are annoying for not appreciating it. these are the type of people that makes content like : 10 reasons why I bought the S9 then 5 days later 10 reasons why I am returning the S9 lol

Considering the original S5 didn't have a fan but had unlimited 4k 8 bit recording, I cannot believe this camera can't record for at least 30 min without overheating.

i know for a fact there is a market for people looking to get into content creation and vlogging, though i don't see how out of all the options, this would be the one. the price is great i guess though spec wise im not actually sure why this would be a choice, as much as i love and use real time lut in my s5ii i really dont think it'd be worth losing as many features as u do in the s9?

Imagine the money spent on development, tooling, manufacturing and promotion on this thing. Canon gets blasted for producing dark lenses of F4 upwards, what does Panasonic do, produce an F8. In places where this is good enough you need an EVF because you can't see a thing on the screen.

It's like Panasonic decided to make a camera to compete with the Sony ZVE1 but then discovered half way in that they didn't have the technology, money, knowhow and hardware to do it.

This is the video I needed! The 18-40 other than it being smaller is a bit daft isn't it! They have a 14-28 with macro capabilities. The 26mm F8 is literally the silliest aperture they could have given it. It's not even equivalent to a 14mm MFT pancake that they made at f2.5..... and its a manual lens!!!!! Can't say the tech featured doesn't have potential, but this fisher price looking camera cemented my stay in MFT.

@cameraconspiracies there can't be a camera with much better specs than A7SIII, because no one has a FF sensor for quicker than the old Sony 48 megapixel quad bayer pinned down to 12MP. Sensor manufacturers first need to come out with better sensor, then better cameras carrying that sensor will follow.

Aint gonna lie. I only knew of the 4k60 and hd limits from this guy.

Loved recording 7+ hours straight on my a7IV. I don't even think it split the video it just gave me a 300GB file. Maybe I remember wrong, but the fact I only had to press record once and not worry was great. All that in 4K25p in 10 bit.

It all depends on what you’re trying to achieve. The X100VI is so popular because it does so much in such a compact and enticing design. 6.2k video with log options, IBIS, internal ND. Even something as niche as the Sigma FP did what it does well better than any other camera anywhere close to its price point (full frame, 12 bit CDNG RAW, etc). With Panasonic’s S9 I don’t see any of that. It does everything worse and is missing so many obvious features…it’s confusing to say the least.

Agreed Kasey! This is an atrocious camera. It's everything that I dislike about other brands, particularly Sony. Sacrificing important functionality and reliability in the name of "small and light" is something Lumix used to avoid at all costs and its what I loved about their systems. The extreme thermal issues, limits on HD in 2024 is unacceptable, lack of EVF, headphone jack, weather sealing are all frustrating and for some users deal breakers and others not a big deal but the lack of a hotshoe is honestly baffling, shocking. It completely neuters this camera as use as a studio camera, back up camera, event, festival, clubbing, night photography in everyway. This kind of camera would be very popular with a casual market, taking photos of their friends at clubs and festivals, the kind of photography where people love direct on camera flash look and not only does it not have a built in flash but you can even add one, my 1970s Canon AE-1 has a hotshoe, my smaller and more capable GX9 has a hotshoe and built in flash. I am flawed with how out of touch this camera is, it doesnt suit any market and any that it slightly does, it's beat by competition that is more capable but also cheaper. When the rumours started I thought this could possibly be a good D cam or backup camera that's small enough to slip into a bag incease anything goes wrong with your cameras but the limitations make that completely useless. They tried to make a tiny portable FF camera in the body suited to a M43 camera and have had to compromise on far far more than they should have. This makes me think back to the Lumix G100, the last "content creator" Lumix made, which was destroyed by critics... yet is a much better and more featured camera than this one. I love Lumix and have multiple Lumix cameras but this is a terrible terrible move by them. Should have focused on a S1Hii and S1Rii and this camera should have been the GX9ii...

Definitely going after the X-100 crowd hoping that those folks don't need the compromises it comes with. I don't think Panasonic are that dumb. This is them rolling a relatively low-risk dice. They know that the S1H ii with 960fps slow-mo is what the serious KZfaq Vloggers want, and it's coming. They just need a find a sensor from Sony's bin that'll do it for them first.
