About this program
Giuliana Bruno, Emmet Blakeney Gleason Professor of Visual and Environmental Studies, Harvard University, and Thom Collins, Neubauer Family Executive Director and President, Barnes Foundation, will consider the role and function of the museum-as both a physical site and a conceptual space-in Julien’s filmmaking. Beginning with The Attendant (1993) and continuing in works such as Three (The Conservator’s Dream) (1999), Vagabondia (2000), Baltimore (2003), Once Again . . . Statues Never Die (2022), and most recently Lina Bo Bardi-A Marvellous Entanglement (2019), Julien has imaginatively explored the unconscious drives that govern museum collections and displays, and surfaced the systems of desire, violence, and erasure on which they are built. Moderated by Rachel Stratton, Postdoctoral Research Associate, Yale Center for British Art.
About the exhibition
Isaac Julien’s immersive multichannel film installation Lina Bo Bardi-A Marvellous Entanglement (2019) offers a poetic portrait of the leading architect of Brazilian modernism, Lina Bo Bardi. The nine-screen installation envisioned for the Yale Architecture Gallery ignites a conversation between Bo Bardi’s landmark buildings in Brazil and Paul Rudolph’s Brutalist design for the Yale School of Architecture (1963). The exhibition is on view at the Yale Architecture Gallery through December 10, 2023.
