ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC PANEL🎉 … interestingly, the only yoga injury I ever had (and still have - yoga butt) is from ashtanga…I am now back to practicing Sivananda…I LOVE Ashtanga buuut, it always causes hurt and interferes with my yoga practice…

shame ! more to do with the style of presentation rather than the method itself I fear. It really doesn’t have to be injurious (although it so often is).

It's not the ashtanga that injured you It's the attitude you did it

There's a lot of dogma, pseudo-science, ignorance, rigidity, intolerance and stubbornness in Ashtanga. Ashtanga hasn't caught up with advancement and modern discoveries in anatomy, physiology, cell biology and functional movement. If Ashtanga is also supposed to be curative and medicinal, then like medicine, it also has to evolve.

Yes and in addition Jois' system which I believe you refer to by the term ashtanga has been secularized. Krishnamacharya used mantras before, after and throughout his asana practice like all other asana systems used to and many still do. Anthony Grim Hall has written extensively about Krishnamacharya's ashtanga. He has blogs and books. In overall this secularization of yoga by leaving out important mantras and prayers has done a great disservice to people because not having spirituality, its energy and blessings as a central foundation invites lots of problems, including injuries because the lack of spiritual energy, i.e. pure soft energy keeps the small self and its hard energy at play which then easily leads to breaking of tissues, both physical and nonphysical. So bring back heart and soul! Prayers and mantras, sing with love.

I thought this was the underlying aim of the discussion, no? to try to ground yoga and ashtanga in anatomically sound knowledge.

So loved this conversation. Leslie is so right, don’t let it become a clinic it’s an enquiry. I left the Ashtanga community a nearly 15 years ago, i took a different route. Yoga is so much more than asana, and yet it’s become the architect of its own destiny. There’s so much that can be said, the quality of teacher training, continuous training and self practice. And yes as Day says it can get pretty challenging to create the level of Sattwa. Thank you it’s clarified all that we see and feel as teachers. Breath. Mind. Spaciousness. May we all continue to work on ourselves to deepen our relationship to us and our community 🌿

@@annabel68 I had a similar problem. I started in 2002 and after a while started wondering how joyless and dogmatic it was. That was the time when ashtanga was quite new (in Finland) and everything Jois taught was taken as the final word. So I didn't stick with it, not with the strict interpretation of Jois. Then I stumbled upon Anthony Grim Hall's work. He had done lots of research into Krishnamacharya and the "original ashtanga" which made nothing but sense to me. With youtube, I found out other less rigid interpretations of ashtanga.
