Lead On, O King Eternal #580
Sanctuary Choir
Dr. Terry Morris, Director of Traditional Music
John Gearhart, Organist
Jonathon Saint-Thomas, Pianist
February 10, 2019
First United Methodist, Downtown, Houston Tx
Lead on, O King eternal, the day of march has come;
Henceforth in fields of conquest Thy tents shall be our home.
Through days of preparation thy grace has made us strong;
And now, O King eternal, we lift our battle song.
Lead on, O King eternal, till sin's fierce war shall cease,
And holiness shall whisper the sweet amen of peace.
For not with swords loud clashing, nor roll of stirring drums;
With deeds of love and mercy the heavenly kingdom comes.
Lead on, O King eternal, we follow, not with fears,
For gladness breaks like morning where'er Thy face appears.
Thy cross is lifted o'er us, we journey in its light;
The crown awaits the conquest; lead on, O God of might

"Through days of preparation, thy grace has made us strong." If we've been walking consistently with the Lord, He has prepared us for such a time as this.

Hymns are to be sung as adoration to Our God, and not as funeral dirges. The organist is to lead the hymn singing and service with strong support, but never louder than lovely!!! This is exactly the way I play for our congregational singing. Where emphasis is called for, I pour it on, and the worshippers love it!!! Sheep are to be led, and music should augment the spoken message. You must give people what they want, not a timid little, thin sounding song. We are worshipping, not having a knitting party!!! Think about it, and enter into a ministry of music!!! Many times, music reaches souls where the word may not necessarily. Don't miss the opportunity!!!

I am so pleased to have found your channel. As a long time church organist with great interest in improvising and putting the power into hymns, I am absolutely impressed beyond words. I live a great distance from Houston, but I’d make a trip sometime to experience this excellent music. Thank you so much for sharing on KZfaq. 😊👍🇺🇦

Nowadays, hymns like this are often deemed politically incorrect and "too militaristic." This is rubbish. This song, along with others like is (such as "Onward Christian Soldiers" and "Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus") are referring not to literal warfare but the spiritual conflict we all face as believers. As the second verse of this one says, "For not with swords loud clashing nor roll of stirring drums/With deeds of love and mercy the heavenly kingdom comes." The war references are only metaphors. I think part of why I personally like this one is because it's more upbeat. Too often we forget that Christ came to put joy into our lives and not to take it out.

Hotwax93, Arthur Sullivan (Gilbert and Sullivan) actually wrote “Onward Christian Soldiers” for the little kids in the summer camp where he directed music. They were afraid to trek back to their cabins in the dark after vespers, so he wrote a March to send them on their way with courage.

@@hotwax9376, True that. But the powerful march tune and harmony were written by Arthur Sullivan in 1871. His purpose was to help little camp kids overcome their fear of darkness by marching together through the woods at night. Great old hymn. Father Bearing wrote the lyrics several years before Sullivan set the words to music. Sullivan actually wrote the music for 80 hymns while summer camp musician, like Nearer My God to Thee, Let the Lower Lights keep Burning, I need Thee Every Hour, and lots more. All of these were before he began writing comedic operas with Gilbert.
