This car is honestly one of the most visually appealing cars I've ever seen. Its just amazing. If the interior was a bit different.. for example different colour scheme... itd be even better.

The "revised" car sounds nice, has jaw dropping looks, but that interior looks quite bad and most people, i'd say even chevy people, would think that ditching the Ford engine was wrong. The 74 on the other hand is almost perfection on wheels, though i really like the ones with the front spoiler.

For those who don't understand why there are so many negative comments about using a GM engine in the Yellow Pantera, let me try to explain. The DeTomaso Pantera was a very special limited production car. There were a total of around 7,000 Panteras built in Italy from 1971 to 1993. For comparison, there were 13,769 Shelby Mustangs built from 1965 to 1970; almost twice as many as the Pantera. It is estimated that around 3,500 or so Panteras are still in existence around the world these many years later. Most people are not aware that the Pantera was actually the replacement for the Ford Powered, 2 seat, AC/Shelby Cobra, which was last produced in 1967. An original, non-molested DeTomaso Pantera in excellent condition brings $100,000+ these days. Can you imagine the outcry if someone took an original AC Cobra, or a Shelby Mustang, and dropped a Chevy engine into it? How about taking a Hemi Cuda convertible and dropping a Chevy engine into it, or maybe a 1963 Split window Corvette with a 340 Chrysler in it? Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.........

I don’t mind the materials in that interior, but the colours aren’t right for it. Too bright.... the body is really interesting from a design point of view....I don’t mind it, but it’s a one off modification that turns it into a kit car.....but not that bad to look at. DeTomaso wouldn’t be too upset, I’d wager. Should have kept the motor a Ford, but in an aluminum block and head config with crazy power...

I play tons of games, but I also work on cars for a living and also enjoy spirited driving every now and again. To be honest, I think the exterior of the modded Pantera looks pretty cool even if the classic obviously looks better. The yellow interior however is disgusting, full on black would have been all that was nessesary to make it stand out without making it look like its owned by a Nike entrepreneur. Keep it real dude and stay safe, you're awesome!

Matt I know its hard to be negative on a car but thats why we watch because your an awesome person who can express himself wonderfully, the sema build is beautiful but not as much a drivers car as the original. Hell the new car may even be a beautiful show piece but terrible to drive, i can obviously see the difficulty saying that to the person providing the cars but you're going to have to (just be like they need to fix xyz and i look forward to driving it again but at the moment id like the drive of the old car and the looks of the new one). Anyway love your videos obviously keep up the good work

Everything I said in the video and more I said right there to their faces. That's why they brought me the car; they wanted feedback on dialing it in. When the car doesn't inspire confidence, I don't want to drive it fast in the rain with no wipers or seatbelts.

Guilherme Mauricio no, if you watched the video, you'd see that it had absolutely zero fine tuning. Good parts are worthless if you don't tune them. They brought it to me for my feedback so they could fine tune it and make it drive properly, and they allowed me to make a film in the process.

Great review. A simple cam change, intake/carb, and better flowing exhaust and the original 351 Cleveland will easily put out north of 450 horsepower without adversely changing the smooth, torquey nature of the engine. A Pantera with a correctly functioning stock cooling system will idle all day long with no tendency to overheat. I've had my 1973 for 28 years now; its still impossible to drive without getting a big grin on my face. :-)

@inudude15
@inudude15 10 жыл бұрын
For one, history wears rose tinted glasses. Indeed, the pretty ones are the ones that get restored and resto-modded and cared for and shown. We see the big, 427 wielding, four speed COPO Camaro, not the six-cylinder automatic that people actually bought. And more so than that is the fact that up until the early seventies emissions and safety laws were virtually non-existent. You could have a car with a razor edged front section and pointed wings because there was no legislation telling automakers you can't slice or impale pedestrians in a low speed collision. Nowadays there is such a maze of red tape regarding how the cars have to react in all manner of situations, how the lights have to line up, how much candle power they can have, etc, etc, etc. The fact that there are cars now that are still legitimately good looking is a testament to how hard the designers are working within the new sandbox they've been given and how far science and technology have advanced.

Whether it's a Chevy, Ford or Mopar, stay true and through. You spend this kinda money on a build like this and to compliment a car of this stature, you don't throw an LS engine in there. That's just cheezy. There are some things you just keep pure, and this is one of them.

The original idea was to have a reliable, powerful and affordable engine, thus an american V8. One you can replace for the price of a Lamborghini valve seat, as JC put it. To a european like me, a Pantera is a Pantera when it has an american V8. Of course, a car like the AC Cobra needs to have a Ford engine. And yes, the 350R flat-plane would be the coolest engine possible for this car. Guess that engine wasn't available yet when this was built
@ArionEquus
@ArionEquus 7 жыл бұрын
As a little update for you on that topic... They're being really selfish with the flat-plane. You can get the cross plane version of the very same engine. As a crate engine for whatever build you'd like. With a ton of high end parts. Including their cobra jet throttle body and heads. All-in-all a package that throws down approx 600HP. But the flat plane 5.2 is pretty much a GT350 exclusive engine. So, if you want one. You're pretty much going to have to scrap a new GT350 to get one. Go look up the 5.2L Aluminator XS if you want more info.

The Pantera is one of my absolute all time dream cars. Just for the fact that it is so open to engine swapping/tuning and one can rely on the entire aftermarket for US cars for that. That's one thing in which the US really is far ahead of us europeans. If you can put a Ford V8 into a car, it's not hard to use anything from a coyote to an LS with all the available levels of price and power one might be looking for.

That interior is the most horrible I've seen on this show, ALL form over function and the form isn't even that good. It looks good on the outside though. No seatbelts? That doesn't make any damn sense.
@CosmoxYRik

In places where it's legal to drive without seatbelts, I can sort of understand people leaving them off an old bench seat cruiser, but in a Pro touring car you need to be strapped in to drive it in anger. Only reason I can think of is the race harness gets bolted in for track days. Edit- Then I got to the Nike part. Ok this car has no seatbelts for the same reason it has no functioning gauges. It's a pointless running shoe ad crafted by an advertising agency. The fact that it even has an engine is coincidental. Utterly pointless and I have no idea why this would make me buy a pair of sneakers.

CosmoxYRik In the USA at least,there's NOWHERE you're allowed to drive without seatbelts,unless the car was made pre-1955. Classic cars,you must have at least a lapbelt.

Cool, yeah I'm on the other side of the world, thought there might be some states left in the US where that was semi-legal. So not only is it a half assed, half finished running shoe ad, but you can't technically drive it anywhere. It's even less useful than those stupid pump up basketball sneakers Nike were pushing in the early 90's. Yeah as I said my first thought was "oh ok, the seat and harness go in on raceday" cos with a "pro-tour" car you'd expect to be doing some Pro-touring, but this car is just a useless piece of bling that'll be shoehorned into an upcoming rap video. I'd rather drive Corwin's deathtrap RX7.

Well they did have some issues with quality control because they were in a rush to get into the super car market. But the car's history is fascinating and they look exotic enough to catch the eye. I've always thought it was funny that this is an Italian with an American heart. When they're restored you can improve on them greatly just by adding up to date equipment. Of course having one that's all original increases their value. It's pretty cool that someone re-envisioned DeTomaso's evolution and brought this along. Now I just wonder if they'll actually manufacture it.

I'm no DeTomaso expert, but weren't there a ton of factory modifications you could have installed at the dealer? Kind of blurs the line between what you'd normally consider a restoration and a pro touring car.

Yes there were, which is why unlike other period exotics, so many Panteras are modified and that's OK. There really are very few true purists of that brand. There were changes like, every year, so people are OK doing their own mods.

Lots of people hating on the LS motor but that seems to be the best part of the build. It makes amazing sounds and seems to go super hard. I'd be interested to see this car after it's better sorted. Sad to see that it just won't fit larger folk, but at 5'5" I personally would love to try them both. I bet I could heel and toe both as well - my existing car was terrible for that but I worked it out in the end. I dare you to bring them both to Melbourne (Australia) and prove me wrong.(ohpleaseohpleaseohplease)

There is a reason why there are 'Design Studios'........they nit-pick on every little detail about design, curvatures, angles, "where do your eyes go to", all of it, is there anything that "distracts", looks too "busy"......how is it seen as a whole? Frankly the new version looks like it was "designed" by a Fourteen-Year-Old child.......no accounting for taste, or any of my mentioned "tips". Design studios get paid the big bucks and the Studios names are well known ......not everybody can do this.....those who can't, tend to embarrass themselves, as in this case.

dood9971 OK, First off, at 1:35 let's take a look, OK? Looking at the six rectangles we have on the front, If you will note the line of the "hood" does line up with the central opening of the lower valence, left & right, OK, a good start, that's OK. Drop a vertical line for that one & it looks OK, drop another vertical line from the headlight inner edge, it lines up with the hoodline, but just barely, as it rounds the edge of the bumper it's going south, bad. the lower outboard scoops while turning in to match-up with the central lower opening have now "grown in width. Now, run a horizontal line from these two outboard scoops, the tops don't match-up with the center, the gaps continue "flaring" wider & wider as they come down to the vestigil air-dam on the edge.. Now compare the six openings , each one is virtually the same surface area, just different shapes ...there are ratios designers use....according to just where you want the eyes to be drawn to. Do you want the eyes drawn towards the central "exhaust" vents, or the headlights, lower valence? No "decision here, just a mish-mash of shapes. A simple & much more esoteric fix, shrink the lower outboard scoops, index the outer edge to match that funky "kink" on the corner of the headlamps, appx. 2/3 rds, bring the inner edge in to match the center opening, have the outer edge to match the inner edge. way way back in 1974, after I saw the Wankel rotor Corvette concept car, at the Worlds Fair in Washington.........I wound up putting to paper, my take on car design........sure enough my old drawing looked very similar to the lines of the "new" 1982 Pontiac Trans-Am........kinda spooky. Try downloading, screenshot, or take pictures of a screen, jump over to "Paint" & try re-doing designs.....you'd be amazed just how one can redo designs, & how much better it looks to YOUR eye.

The answer to the power steering thing is to go with a manual rack and a programmable, speed sensing electric PS system. Program it to have full assistance below 5mph, with the assistance reducing as speed increases. A well set up system can make a massive difference. I've driven a GT40 replica fitted with such a system, both before installation and after, and that car went from being a real pig to park & hard work around town, to being no harder to steer than a modern. Above 40mph, all the assistance had gone and the car felt just like it should, with all the feedback and weight it needed to be a pleasing drive...
