HOW TO CLEAN AND PROTECT LEATHER SEATS !! In this video, I show you how to clean and protect your car’s leather seats. These tips and tricks also apply to synthetic leathers and vinyl seats. We will vacuum the seats, remove surface dirt and body oils and grime with leather cleaners, wipe the seats clean and protect the leather seats with a ceramic coating. This will help protect the seats from liquid spills, dirt, dye transfer from jeans, UV rays, fading, cracking and friction damage. I will also explain how to perform regular maintenance on your car seats.

No, just wash them immediately after use and you can reuse them.

Pan, is there anything that will minimize the creases on the sides of the leather seats? Both front seats on the side next to the doors have creases on them.

I think a better way to go would be to use an Upholstery" brush. This is a vacuum attachment that has bristles on the end. Just like the ones used on regular house vacuums.

Hiya Pan, another great video. My next new car is coming with leather seats so it was great you talked about the ceramic coating. I am looking at the C Quartz but didn't know they did a dedicated leather coating, do now!!! Also thanks for the info about maintenance washes for the seats/dash etc. 3:1 ratio for cleaning solution...will make a more of that 👩‍🔬👩‍🔬. New ways of cleaning but very few tips on maintenance well done sir. Looking forward to your next instalment!!!!

Another great video - informative and instructional. The advice re gloves is terrific - if you're handling anything chemical, treat it as toxic. (I can tell horror stories about people who didn't.) The list of products is also invaluable.

Pan, I love the channel! I just found it a week ago after buying a new car. So I’ve been watching several of your washing and detailing videos and just stocked up on all of the recommended cleaning supplies. My Dodge Challenger has the houndstooth fabric upholstery and I’d like to either get either some high quality, leather seat covers or replace the existing upholstery with leather. I’ve heard some good things about Katskin as a replacement for the existing cloth seats. Do you have any thoughts on leather seats or seat cover options?

Hey Pan. Very informative video. Thank you for all the help. Last year I bought a brand new car, and I paid a detailer to apply ceramic coating on the leather. Unfortunately he applied too much coating and didn’t remove the excess. Some spots on the seats are more shiny than it was supposed, looking like it is dirty. Is there any technique to remove this shiny? Or the only solution is to dye the leather? Thank you man. Greetings from Brazil.

Thanks for the awesome video Pan! I have the same seats in black. Love them but I don’t like that the inside of the perforated holes is not painted.. looks the same on yours. Do you have sensatec on your dashboard? Would you also use gyeon leather shield on that or something else?

Conditioners aren't needed on new modern leather. They don't penetrate the plastic clear coat that lies on top of the leather. So it's best to clean it, and protect it from dye transfer, UV rays, fading, friction damage, etc. Like in this tutorial. @@PanTheOrganizer I did go through both of the videos. But if you look at the perforated seats, the leather is not coated in the holes. Does it make sense to condition that leather or the shield is enough? I really want to protect the seats the best I can... :)

Pan I just wanted to thank you for your professional and thorough videos. I was curious if you suggest using a ceramic leather coating as well as a conditioner? I have a 2018 vehicle with less than 18,000 on the odometer and wanted to get the spring cleaning started while the weather starts to clear up. Again, really appreciate all of your videos and keep it tight and clean!!

You don't need conditioners one new leather. And certainly don't use a conditioner before applying a leather ceramic coating, you would prevent proper bonding of the coating. Just clean and apply the coating as per this video, or the instructions of the coating you purchased. New leather from the factory has a clear coat on it, a plastic transparent protection almost like the paint on your car. So conditioners don't penetrate that. Hence why we simply want to protect the leather from UV rays, friction damage, dye transfer and make them easier to clean if you get any liquid spills by making the leather hydrophobic. I hope this helps!

One question about leather seat cleaning and care: our 2018 Ford Explorer has the word "Platinum" embroidered into the top of the seat back. Is there something special I should do to clean and protect the stitching?

Not really. Just applying the coating on the leather seats should be enough. And regular cleaning once every month or every other month.

Both are excellent. Coatings are great if you want 10-12 months of protection, but the Colourlock works wonders too you just need to reapply every three months. I love both methods.

nice one! one tip we use is to take a bit of kamikaze masking tape around the edges of the crevice tool which protects leather & plastic from any potential marring :)

Hey Pan, love your videos. Quick question, you mentioned that any vehicle that is less than 3yrs old have a protective film on the leather seats and you just need to clean and protect. What if the vehicle is 3yrs old but leather is cracked in areas where its common, would you approach with the conditioner or protection? Hey Pan thank you for the video. Have you experienced any breathe-ability issues with the leather coatings? I used leather shield on my M2 and really didn’t enjoy the results as I lost a lot of the natural grip the leather had and I seemed to sweat a bit more. I use Matt’s OG solution now and really prefer the result of going the sealant route; I love the stuff that Colourlock and Swissvax produce.

Coatings do seal more compared to good sealants like Colourlock which allows more “breathing”. But coatings make maintenance easier and you reapply less often. It’s always a question of compromise. I like both methods.

Hey Pan, great video! I do have a question about leather care, yesterday I thoroughly cleaned my seats and used meguiar’s gold class 3 in 1 leather cleaner and conditioner. For a product like this, what should my maintenance schedule/process be like? (Some extra notes: My seats are also perforated Nappa leather and it’s also my daily driver so it undergoes wear and tear everyday, but not necessarily heavy contamination as I do exercise great caution when it comes to my vehicles and what I put in them 😂)

I would perform that routine at least once every three months. More often if they get dirty quicker.

Pan. Great vid. Any thoughts on the two in one clean and protect products? When I first got into detailing I bought the Chemical Guys sprayable leather. Car is new and has good leather (SQ5) if that makes a difference. Cheers.

Sprayable Leather from CG is a two-in-one product that I like. Won't last that long but it certainly does the job of cleaning and protecting. Keep in mind it leaves a bit glossier finish, so if you prefer matte OEM looks, go for the ones proposed in this video.

G'day Pan, I'm playing catch-up with your last 2 videos. 2 years ago I protected my new cars leather seats with Car Pro Quartz Leather. I have a couple of questions that you may be able to answer. How do you remove the existing coating from the leather seats before applying another coating? All my passenger seats have not had anyone sit in them, front passenger (3 people) in 2 years. Would the coating still be good or does the coating deteriorate over time whether they have been sat in or not? Thoroughly enjoyed the video. Ozz.

Good day! Leather coatings typically only last 12 months. After that point, you simply clean the leather and reapply.

Thank you for that tutorial Pan. Man, those seats looked like they just rolled out of the showroom. In this cold whether it seems to bring my thoughts to the interior of the vehicle... especially if it's in cold storage. So, I've heard that diluted Woolite is a very effective cleaner. Haven't tried it yet, hence the timeliness of your show being perfect before I dig in. This is a home diy solution which I've seen you use with success on granite, stainless, and general cleaning, of course with different base. Interested in your thoughts on this one Pan. Also see Fe H comments which I chimed in on re: leather breathing. Thanks Professeur... or. Pls. keep them coming !

Great video as always. One quick question. Do this process apply to cars with sealed leather? I have a 2020 Porsche and I am fairly confident they said the leather is sealed. I am sure I can clean it just fine but does it need treated and will the treatment even take? Thanks for your thoughts.

Thanks! To answer your question, pretty much all modern leather has a clear coat or plastic top coating on top of it (what some refer to as "sealed leather"), hence why conditioners don't penetrate that surface. Conditioners and moisturizers are meant for older more worn leather, as that protective coat eventually dissipates or diminishes through the years, just like clear coat on car paint, when it's exposed to the elements unprotected. So the preferable way of dealing with leather is to protect it from dye transfer, liquid spills, sweat and body oils, friction damage, etc. And the common ways are using leather sealants (like the Colourlock system I spoke about) or leather ceramic coatings, just like what I show in the video. Both systems are meant to protect the leather surfaces.

I treated my leather with the gyeon leather coating and have done the maintenance with the gyeon leather cleaner diluted as instructed in the video. Is there a product to use to get the seats back to the firmness like they were when new?(they are about 2 years old)after the maintenance with the gyeon leather cleaner it does seem to firm them back somewhat but just wondered if any product can get them more firm. Hi PAN, so modern day leather” is already coated when it leaves the factory? What about older cars.... classic cars that are 30 plus years old? Wouldn’t you use a different set of products and procedures? I use saddle soap on my leather seats and then Connelly Leather conditioner or Lexol? For maintenance cleanings (2 months) the leather protected with gyeon leather shield I like to clean it with leather cleaner and then top it off with gyeon leather coat. Works really well

Hello Pan! Thank you very much for this awesome video! I manage a turbo prop airplane that has 11 seats and is 7 years old. The leather is still in good condition. But, it would be great to incorporate your techniques and tips to keep it looking good! Thank you very much for the links; it will be great to do a 1 stop shopping for the unique supplies involved while supporting the channel. And on the home front, my wife and I both have Toyota off road vehicles (we live in the mountains of Colorado) that has some sort of faux leatherette kind of seats.
