As Greeny used to say, take ONE player - usually your QB, remove them from the cap pool and pay them whatever you want. Then, build you team using the cap.

I would argue that Trevor Lawrence's presence has already paid massive dividends for the Jaguars organization and, by extension, the city of Jacksonville. You think the franchise would have felt emboldened to put out the stadium proposal without the run he helped spearhead to close out the 2022 season? You think the stadium negotiations would have gone smoothly, or even have happened at all, if the Jaguars stayed losing 10+ games every year like they had in the previous decade-plus? I would even go as far as to say that few athletes are as important to their city as Trevor is to Jacksonville, and that alone would have been enough justification for the Jaguars to get this extension done - especially now, before his value had a chance of getting any higher.* Since we're talking about how this is "just business," the optics of lowballing a QB who's already done as much as Trevor has for a small-market city and franchise would have been an awful one across the board. * - and btw, given how the quarterback market moves in the NFL, there's a non-zero chance that he could no longer be the highest-paid QB on average by the time you finish reading this comment.

Trevor couldn’t win a single game the final 5 games of the season all must win games and lost to the practice squad titans with division on the line why would you pay a 20-30 qb record with a horrible career 85 qb rating instead of waiting another year?

They're not paying him for how he looked after the bye week last year (injured and battered playing in front of a turnstile of an offensive line). They're paying him on the hopes that he'll look like the QB he was in between the bye weeks of 2022 and 2023. "Waiting another year" could/would have led to him commanding something in the range of $60M+ after a great season - the Jags got out ahead before that could become a possibility. By the way, check out what their QB room has looked like after Mark Brunell left - it'll become extremely apparent why they would be keen to keep Trevor for the long haul.

It’s probably too much money I’ll agree but you have to keep in mind Goff Murray Watson and Kirk cousins all got over 45 AAV as well as others (admittedly some better than tlaw) but tlaw was always going to get something in this ballpark regardless of how good he actually is it’s just what qbs are being paid
