I grew up in a no sugar cereal during the boom of cereals, the 80’s, and I can ASSURE anyone that the bowl of sugar AT the breakfast table was greatly depleted on the daily when I ate Wheaties. Milk sugar sludge was my childhood middle finger to “The Man”. Once Seinfeld normalized adult consumption and possession of multiple breakfast cereals, I was convinced adulting might suck less. Mom monitored the sugar we put on cereal, but fairly early on we realized that our bowls were white, and sugar was white, so if we managed to dump sugar into the bottom of the bowl before we poured the cereal, we'd be able to have vast amounts of sugar.... and then we'd carefully measure out the one allowed spoonful on top of the cereal.

Alton at home like this, doing these segments, and submitting it, would have at least gotten a great 3rd place, maybe 2nd even. 😜. Just kidding. These are awesome! My wife is a rice krispy purist. She hates treats loaded with M&Ms, or chocolate chips or any adulteration of the basic recipe. So, when I offered to make a "different" recipe she was immediately skeptical. In fact, she didn't even want me to attempt it because she was sure she'd hate it. Cut to the chase: she LOVED this recipe. The hint of salt with the browned butter had a rich caramel flavor. Just the toasting of the rice elevated the treats tremendously. You made me a hero to my wife, Mr. Brown!

We are converted!!! Tried this today and the toasted cereal + the browned butter made a slightly carmel taste. We forgot the kosher salt this time, but know it will make it even better! Thanks for the great spin on an old classic. Love making this on the stove top as opposed to microwave. Eating warm is a gooey wonderment of tastebud pleasure. Thanks Alton Brown!!!

I finally got around to making this. My wok was nowhere near big enough to properly toast the rice without the considerable risk of burning the bottom layer, which in Alton's own words, "would not be good eats." But the brown butter and the pinch of salt? Absolutely fantastic. And it never occurred to me to put everything back in the box, saves on the washing up after.

I had to double-check myself when the gasp was audible when he said he’d toast it and I was drinking a big gulp of my ginger tea. I was like “my imagination is loud today ...oh, wait.” 😅😅😅

Been hooked on Alton Brown since first season of “Good Eats”...which is still the best cooking show on the planet.

I've got a wok, rice crispys,expensive butter, and the jet puffed marshmallows! This is the third time watching this video, and im ready to make them!!!- only im putting them into a 13/9 glass pan, to cool in. Then i will cut the bars, and wrap them individually with press and seal saran wrap, then put them in a gallon size ziplock baggies. Because even though my pan has a lid, they got stale. Thanks for the new twist in this recipe!!!

I met Alton Brown at a book signing in Seattle. He signed books for 3 hours and was just as nice to the last person in line (I was like 3rd from last) as he was to the first. He’s a class act. Love this guy.

When we got a stand mixer, I had to make Alton’s marshmallows. Then I used those marshmallows to make Rice Krispie Treats. BEST EVER. Just sayin it’s worth it.

I love the idea of re-using the cereal bag and box. I do this every time I make Chex Mix -- because I don't make the tiny batches listed in the recipes -- I usually make 6 boxes worth of Chex Mix (1 corn chex, 1 wheat chex, 2 rice chex, 1 Crispix, 1 Cheerios, plus all the other goodies like pretzels and mixed nuts and raisins) and then I don't have enough storage containers for it -- so after it cools, I pour it back into the cereal boxes for storage. The liners from cereal boxes have dozens of uses, so by saving then, you can reduce usage of zip top bags, waxed paper, and even parchment paper in times when no heat is involved (since the cereal box liners are plastic which could melt).

Ive been watching Alton since i was 10, and it still fills me with joy to see how much of a mad lad he can be in the kitchen. 20 years and hes still a crazy genius. And the rice crispy treat hidden in the box is pure genius

I haven't seen Alton Brown in anything for years and years, since I dumped cable TV years ago, and could no longer watch the Food Network for hours on end. I was looking for videos on these treats, and his popped up. Glad to know he recommends specific brands. I actually have a stick of Kerry Gold butter in the freezer. Yes, the freezer. It was Alton who, years ago, told us that we can freeze butter. So I always get it when it's on sale and freeze it. I do usually get Kroger salted butter, when they have the discount sale for up to five at a time with the digital coupon. And I once got Kerry Gold butter at my Kroger for way cheap because my store, being he smallest Kroger in the country, does not normally stock it. I must confess, that for "krispy rice treats" I use Kroger brand krispy rice cereal. Much cheaper. Thanks Alton.

My oldest daughter made salted browned butter rice krispie treats last week and she’s now my favorite daughter. These are a total game changer. We’ll have to try toasting the cereal though next time - nice touch!

My little sister would use a long-handled spoon to carefully remove the innards from a jar of Marshmallow Creme, without disturbing the thin, thin layer she left lining the jar, then replace the jar in the cupboard.

My grandpa used to love watching you on tv, i never got to watch it with him because he died before i got to meet him, but my family always tries to watch re runs of your show, thank you for making my grandpa happy during his final years.

Alton has allways had a knack for making the most basic recipes extraordinary.
