Chicken quarters are still the cheapest, but I used to get them for $5 for a 10lb bag, and then because they weren't as popular as chicken breast they'd get clearanced and I could pick them up for $3. I miss that a lot, I buy them and split them into single and double packs for the freezer, or cook all of them at once to put shredded meat in the freezer, use the bones for broth. There's such a great value with quarters, and they are way cheaper and easier to work with than a whole chicken.
@breannahorton
@breannahorton 2 жыл бұрын
As a side note for anyone new to buying chicken quarters, those bags are "10 lbs" so there's always going to be the 10lbs but as they aren't processing them more they wont cut one in half to make it exact. If you want to be the person like I am, pick them all up- there's going to be heavier ones. It might be the difference of one bag having 10.1lbs and one having 11lbs. Also count the quarters in the bag- the bones add to the weight so for equal weight the one with 7 will have less meat than one with 6

I found chicken quarters at WM for .99/lb a couple months ago and I bought 10 pounds for the freezer. Deals are definitely out there, it’s more fun when you have a stocked freezer and can cherry pick the best deals.

I would never have thought to freeze mashed potatoes in swirled piles on a pan, that's a great idea!

A time saver that I like to do is to make mashed potatoes and squish them flat in a gallon size baggie - THEN I mix up a meatloaf (raw) and squish it flat into a separate gallon size baggie and then freeze both and store together in the freezer. When I am feeling super lazy I can just take them out to defrost. The cook in the oven same time and temperature for my oven so it is easy peasy. Just add a salad and done!

Hi! I'm reorganizing my pantry and cleaning the floors. I only work on it a few times a week. I didn't work on it at all today, because I've been canning. I canned tomatoes from my garden and I went shopping earlier today and bought bulk sausage and I canned that too. I found a 5 pound bag of potatoes that I had misplaced that had a ton of eyes. Every. Single. Potato. So I stuck them in the ground and added that to my garden. They are doing beautifully and I'm honestly shocked because I started them in early summer. I think I'll have plenty of potatoes!

Thanks for this weeks video…I only shop once a month for my groceries as I’m on an incredibly tight budget…so no shopping this week. However I did write down our most common meals so this week I’m breaking them down onto recipe cards so I can then make my food storage inventory sheet and start shopping sales (and the one for now 2 for later)…putting what you’ve taught me into practice!

We have a small house. 1-car garage, no basement (south FL), so I have very limited storage space. I have one 7-cft deep freezer, and the side/side fridge/freezer in the kitchen. I'm considering making room for a second deep freezer in our laundry room, but that will make things feel very squeezed in there. If only we had a crystal ball, right? For now, I'm as stocked as I can be on chicken breasts (the meat we eat most of), so my ongoing approach to chicken is to buy a flat pack every ten days or so, and meal prep three breasts for the week (on salads for lunch, plus dinner the night I grill it), and freeze the other 2-3 breasts. It's allowing me to stay stocked, and still keep monthly grocery spending down.

Oh my gosh! I can't believe the price of food at the moment. Here in New Zealand chicken breast goes for about $14 a kg (about 2.2lbs) same goes for ground beef which is roughly the same price. Alot of the stores have done a "price freeze" while we're in winter time to make food more affordable for families. That helps when the powerbills are coming in over $300 a month just to keep the homes warm 😣

DO YOU NOT HAVE A PANTRY APP? It takes a while to scan all the barcodes and type the expiry dates. But, after that you just scan things in and out. The App is shared on our phones. We both know what we are short of and what has expired etc. You could always print parts out if you want. It saves me having to rub out the quantities on paper and having to rewrite. I don’t lose my list. I can decide to go shopping from anywhere rather than having to go home to check my pantry. There are several Apps. Some are payable but the extras are well worth it. X

I'm in Southern California and our boneless skinless chicken breasts at one of the local stores is $4.99 a pound. It's ridiculous. Aldi is still having deals now and then on it. But you can only get 2 packages. I have teens and they eat like crazy so 1 package goes quick.

I totally agree with what you said about buying chicken. I saw my Kroger has them for .99 per pound this week. I’m definitely going to make room for 2 or 3. I love cooking them and then canning the meat up when I find a good sale like this. Then it’s shelf stable and I have room in my freezer for other good deals lol-even those are getting harder to get.
