If you want to go outside and eat a random acorn, choose wisely. Some oaks are loaded with extra tannins, making their nuts extra bitter. Find a species that germinates in the fall, like white oak, as their nuts don’t need as much tannin for wintering.

I think it depends because there's a scientific definition of nut and then a popular one. Cashews and almonds are both commonly known as nuts but they're not fruit. They're the seeds of cashew fruit and almond fruit respectively.
