What does profiling the Epson ET-18100 / L18050 A3+ dye ink printer say about paper choices and media settings? Looking at thick media and also printing on art media, such as thin card and canvas.

Thanks Keith for attempting an ICC profile for a Matt paper using a semi gloss media setting. Ive often wondered what would happen if somebody did that. Ive always used the media setting that most closely matches the paper for which I'm attempting to create an ICC profile. Seems that was the best choice 😁 Looks like you've got quite a big job ahead of you, good luck! 😋

Ah - in this case there was no black ink to change, so all the other setting was going to do was change the ink limits. One of the difficulties in making profiles is the media setting selection, since neither Canon or Epson provide ANY usable information about this. The Red River Palo Duro Baryta 300 is my absolute go to paper. The surface is a bit fragile until properly dried and cured, but the results are always impressive. IMHO

Yes, I've tested these in the past on the P5000 - but what works well on one printer is no guarantee of quality on another, especially 'baryta' style papers

Thanks for the detailed video. ICC profiles are readily available from paper manufacturers for et8550 but not L18100. 😢

Very interesting! Looking forward to seeing how the more reflective papers in your interesting stack turn out, including the lustre - especially as to how reflective (luminescent) they are, -since dye inks are supposed to excel in that. Do you have an article or video on how we can create our own profiles? Is your X-Rite system expensive? Is it hardware and software? Their site doesn't explain the iProfiler software. Thanks!

Thanks - Loads of articles/reviews on the site Start here: www.northlight-images.co.uk/video-making-icc-printer-profiles/ The i1iSis XL I use along with i1Publisher currently lists at ~$5k I've quite a few articles/reviews relating to i1Profiler A much more economic solution would be ccprofiler from calibrite [i1Studio/Colormunki as was] www.northlight-images.co.uk/i1studio-update-1-5/

Thank you Keith! I appreciate so much your careful and detailed teaching coaching. I have been printing w a Canon pro-10 for about 5 years with wonderful success but having found you recently is such an added blessing. Your discussion around matt media printing on the epson reminds me of my continuing issue w the Canon. Re Canon and the Matt fine Art option, I am frustrated with the 30mm imposed border on papers. I do most my printing on 8-1/2x11 8x10 portrait images. This is so frustrating not to be able to choose the media selection for the paper I wish to use. Any suggestions re choosing the fine art matt settings? I’d like to believe I can get better prints using recommended settings. Thank you Keith

Unfortunately, the enforced margins on the PRO-10 were a major complaint for me, when I first reviewed it in 2013. www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-pixma-pro-10-printer-review/ I've never come across a proper work-round - this was one of the key improvements of the PRO-300 from my POV

Just when I thought I had settled on buying an ET-8550! It surprises me that there are less media choices than in the ET-8550. I shall have to watch again and check I understood. Does it mean the 8550 might be better when wanting to use Fine Art papers? Thanks so much and I look forward to your more detailed review.

The media settings suggest that art papers are not the target for this 'photo printer' but until I've tested... The 8550 with the pigment black may do better on some art paper, but it will all depend on profiling. There will be no simple answers in the 8550 vs 18100 test ;-)

@@KeithCooper I had a feeling there wasn't going to be a simple answer 😆 It will be interesting to see if the ink costs are equally economic, and they seem to be discontinuing the ET-8550 which is a worry. My husband will probably prefer to have a scanner option, so that may be the deciding factor for us. I can profile papers myself with the iStudio, but not to the same standard as you can.

What suggests a discontinuing of the 8550? It's old enough to start seeing prices coming down a bit, but the 18100 is a new printer so although ultimately cheaper, it's still mostly at full price

@@KeithCooper It was the camera price comparison website - it now only lists used ET8550s - it seemed to explain the lack of stock in places and the lowered price. However it still appears on the Epson site 😅 Interestingly the ink usage they quote would make the ET18100 appear more economic than the ET8550. It seems more economic to buy too. I look forward to your review :)

I suspect it's more about supply issues, but I'll look into it. Ink cost differences would be negligible at this level I'd suggest?

Hello all. Thanks for your great reviews Mr Cooper. I'm in South America and was about to buy the ET8550 (though I have no use for scanning etc.) Your comparisons convinced me that I should get the 18100. But I cant find it to buy anywhere. It does not appear on the Epson USA website, nor is it listed in any stores. Is it out of stock or discontinued already? Another question: can this printer do the extra long prints (> 1metre) you spoke about in a comparison with the 8550?

I believe Epson in some regions have currently decided not to sell the 18100? I've no idea why - I'd suggest asking them? I'll have the 18100 review here in a bit. I still need to do more testing on panoramic printing though.

@@KeithCooper thanks again. I await the full review. The 8550 is an easy choice but it's more expensive with features I don't need. The 18100 is a first class printer for glossy photos. Exactly what I want. My mind is made up: if I can get one.

Hi, great information. Please clarify whether I can use 250gsm paper on l8050 machine. I am not able to find this info from spec sheet.

The limits are based on paper thickness and type - [thickness does not directly equal gsm] 250gsm gloss papers are likely to be fine 250gsm matt papers depend on its robustness and ease of marking - in general, thicker matt/art papers perform poorly See also the main [written] 18100 review www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-18100-printer-review/

Hi, It seems like the ET-18100 and L18050 are not identical printers after all, according to the spec sheet, the ET-18100's Nozzle Configuration is 180 Nozzles Black, 900 Nozzles per Color, whereas the L18050's Nozzle Configuration is 180 Nozzles Black, 180 Nozzles per Color. Not really sure how much that affects print quality though.

Love your videos... Im having issues with mine because few minutes after printing the colours Change from Bright to and Ugly Brown :( i don't know what else to do :( cant find help anywhere

Print a known good test image using the epson print software? I'm assuming you're not using a phone or something like that to print?

Use Epson software and a known test image to check there. However - which Epson paper? Have you tried a different paper? Did you see the examples in the main written review/

Did you have roller marks on the 300 or 340???

The 300 is relatively thin, so no It seems to be about thickness, not just GSM The potential for marking means that I hve some strong caveats about this printer - get the right apaper and it's great though See: www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-18100-printer-review/

@Mark Leach It's the same as the ET-8550 The European model number is L18100 for the ET-18100

@@creambun1963 ET-18100 ... later this month - can't say more than that since I have an outbreak of paying work for much of this month [yay! about time]. I will be producing some 'update videos' covering aspects of the printer use as and when I get the chance
