I've heard so many people who thought or heard Color Splash was an awful game until they decided to pick it up for themselves. Although I definitely need to do some second playthroughs of the rest of the series, Color Splash's first playthrough was my favorite of the bunch. Awesome video :)

People dislike it because its "not thousand year door", Color Splash is great in its own way.

The only reason the fans don't like Color Splash is because they're brain-washed by TTYD. But as it's own game, Color Splash is an EXTREMELY Good game with tons of memorable and fun moments.

I feel like if paper mario color splash had a battle system that I enjoyed, it would of been AMAZING. I say this because besides the battle system, I loved every single thing about this game. The visuals/art style, the puzzles, the characters (despite looking bland they have personality), and the good humor! I just dreaded doing battles as I do not like the card system.

I got bored with it on my first time playing, however, I'm currently replaying Color splash and it's a blast so far.

Guys, there is no right or wrong here. Let people have their opinions without you getting annoyed. People enjoy different things, that’s how it is.

I played Color Splash when it came out and loved it, I'm 31 years old (now) and grew up with the originals so I can't tell you how fucking *annoyed* I've been the last few years having to endure Arlo's shitty fans calling me underage for liking something different or linking back to his terrible videos on why I should feel bad for enjoying it. Videos like this give me life because shocker, the game has a pretty dull opening with the stupid sage garbage but once you're past that it's creative and fun. Seeing people finally enjoy it and give it some respect gives me life.

My first Paper Mario game was Sticker Star so that was Paper Mario to me, playing through Color Splash and seeing how it advanced upon the previous game's mechanics and fixed some problems was amazing

I'm only 13 so when I first started this game after getting a wii u in 2014 this was one of my main childhood games besides the old ds games, and I'd just like to say that the music track , art style, and down right creativity that was put into this game is very nice for a game made just 1 year before the Nintendo switch was released it truly shows the work nintendo put into their games even when their consoles are dying.

When I first saw playthroughs of color splash, I loved watching it. I thought it looked so cool. And when I got it, I really enjoyed it. When I first heard of how much hate there was for the game, I was so confused.

This game and many others are the reasons why I love the Wii U. Color Splash really delivers it for me, it is an awesome game. And yeah, the battle system is not that good, but it doesn`t ruin the whole game, especially when you have such great music, writing, and worlds to explore, it`s just such a blast to play.

Paper mario color splash was actually my first ever mario game, and it did not dissapoint. Hands down my facourite mario game ever. Wish theyd release it to switch, its a shame so many great games are forever locked away.

I first played ttyd, then color splash, then super paper Mario. I loved ttyd and liked Super Paper Mario. Color Splash was weird; I didn’t like the battle system but I loved most of the rest of the game. The battle system was so bad to me that I don’t know whether to like it.

I recently beat Color Splash too after not playing it for 4 years and I think it's fun as well but the battle system and lack of exp/leveling up killed a lot of the potential the game had. It is a good game but I never want another game with a sticker or card based battle system again and I have high hopes for The Origami King since it seems to do away with that mechanic, even though there's a chance that the game may not have exp/leveling up, which is a little worrying but we'll see.

Nintendo should have done the smart thing and just made this style of Paper Mario into it's own series (like a Paper Luigi or Toad game or even an entirely new series). Using the Paper Mario name is sort of disrespectful when the new games barely have anything resembling it's original 3 games had especially when, Nintendo themselves go out of their way to call the new games Action/Adventure games rather than a RPG. Sure Color Splash is not an outright bad game but it's nothing like Paper Mario used to be.

Am I the only one who kind of enjoyed the card based battles in color splash

I didn't play Super Paper Mario, and I want my time back for Sticker Star, but Color Splash is really enjoyable. It's what I am working on right now I will say...it's not perfect. The battle system itself is minimally rewarding and makes you want to wait until later in the game to complete the colorization of areas and card donation so you can just hit or jump on enemies to instantly defeat them.. But anyone who discounts the game because of said battle system is missing a fun story, tons of humor (always something that makes me chuckle), amazing music (some of the music stays in my Playlist) and a fully realized world that is fun to explore!!

IMO i never liked the original Paper Mario or TTYD, i like Color Splash or Sticker Star better.

Color Splash is a lot of fun and a relatively good game. I feel like it could have been SO much better if they included more original characters and improved the battle system. If they did those things people would have probably thought color splash was one of the best games in the series.

Wow I feel like everyone has a similar experience with it huh I got it for like a bday or Christmas or something and only played it up to Bloo Bay Beach before getting stuck and completely forgetting about it. I found it a couple years later and I have now completed it from the beginning like 4 times and it is now my favorite Paper Mario game I wish people gave it a chance too. People think of it as a "Sticker Star 2.0", like it took everything sticker star did and amped it up, but it is "Still just *Sticker Star* 2.0". My Gamepad charger broke and I've been waiting many days for the new one we ordered to arrive so I could play it again. It arrived today.

Look, I get that you don’t have the same exact battle and level up system as the original, but it still has an amazing plot line with cool characters, secrets, and still has good battle gimmicks! Yes it's a good game but never will be one of the best ones. They got lazy by making the whole world full of toads and making battles useless to do since you don't get experience so you tend to skip them. Some toads do get a story but like, it's just toads... It has some great qualities but really, when you think games like the 1000 door is from 2004.... and Color Splash 2016, I think it makes people all the more angrier that they can't put more soul into these games...

I loved that game so much! It was my GotY in 2016. It's one of the few "feel good games" I played in my life.

That story about the Club Nintendo survey having less than 1% say the story and writing mattered to them makes me gag EVERY time I hear it. 1% of what number? Who were the fucking cretins who participated?? I'm pretty sure that over 99% of the people who like Super Paper Mario at ALL only like it because the writing was still so good. This survey result baffles me to no end in the worst possible way and it KILLS me that the result of what feels like honestly an anomalous poll ended up swaying the direction of the series so far off course forever.

Except for the boss fights, Color Splash was brilliant. But it was a bit dull to need a specific card to beat the bosses.

I picked this up the other week and was aware of the hate directed towards this game. I think it's a blast so far. It's like a child's adventure game with a simple turn-based battle system. The graphics, exploring levels, and the OST are top notch, peak 'Nintendo' IMO. Videogame fans are weird in that most people don't play the game they they rail against. I would wager that the bulk of people never played this game and never will.

I'm glad you rediscovered Color Splash. While it is disappointing all the characters are generic NSMB designs, I'd say if I were to rank them this would be third on my list, below Paper Mario 64 but just slightly above Super Paper Mario.

A great game you might say, but is it a great _Paper Mario_ game? I guess it really DOES depend on what you're looking for nowadays. Clearly, there will be this everlasting divide amongst the older fans and the newer fans. For many, Color Splash was their very first experience with the franchise. So they would have no attachment to the older games. I can't blame them tbh. I'm... Curious about Origami King but after Sticker Star kinda just killed my joy, I dunno if I should be excited for it. I know one of.my favorite things about the original Paper Mario was the distinct variants of Toads, Koopa Troopas, etc. It's funny because I just talked about that in the comments of another video. Talking about "Russ T.", and "Chanterelle" and how their little design quirks, personality and _name_ went a long way to make them stand out from the generic variants of Toads. I guess I just really miss that element too. Color Splash to me is just a better Sticker Star, a game that I regret playing until the end. Writting is certainly an appprovement and I love its visuals. Never a problem there. I guess because of how loud the TTYD side of things can be at times, I always feel like I could never truly express my own love for that game and the original one. At least... Until recently. Maybe Paper Mario just isn't for me anymore. And after the death of Super Mario RPG and the limbo state of Mario & Luigi, I'm just uncertain about the future of Mario RPGs. When the time comes for Paper Mario: The Origami King, I hope that at the very least, it can be like Super Paper Mario was. Controversial it was but it still had that classic Paper Mario spirit within it. Ha ha.

Like you, I also could not finish Sticker Star and that made me not want to play Color Splash. Just got into it though due to covid and the TOK announcement and I got to say I'm pleasantly surprised by how much I'm enjoying it. I think it helps that I came into this one with a better mindset of what it is than I did with Sticker Star. It's far from perfect but definitely and enjoyable experience.

I've been playing Color Splash lately and loving it, enjoy it much more than Origami King or TTYD.

I disagree, for two reasons though: The Bowser being controlled by Black Paint at the end felt like it needed another arc. The core mechanics did not reward the player for participating in the core mechanics and actually punished you. Here is the thing... all it needs is an extra arc and some touch ups. Keep the battle, using cards in battle, using paint in battle, and even how you get more paint the same... but when you get more paint you have an option: Color in you card book to get more space or a container to carry more paint. Throw in cards are only lost for the battle and it gets better, provided you don't mind choosing a deck of cards for battle but choose from them the same in battle as you do now. For those who like the system as is now, you get the benefits of the same system but if you feel like you have too much paint then you don't need more paint and should hopefully get more enjoyment as now you get something useful based on your decision so you should feel more involved in your choices. For those who dislike the lack of purpose in core... there is now purpose in core. As is though... some of the things we consider great in this world excel and have often minor flaws compared to their success as they do their purpose well. Good things tend to do it well but with flaws in the well making it bumpy. I disagree with the notion this game is great due to the weight of its flaws, but not disagree that it is good for some people. I do believe it could be better for THOSE people as well though and with ease yet it being as simple as it is now.

I find the humor funny and I have laughed quite a bit at the random bit of humor. I actually also enjoyed Sticker Star too. The only thing that I hate about the later trilogy of the games was that they made Hammer attacks WAY harder to figure out the timing for... This started in Sticker Star and only got worse... It's like "let's take away the easiest part about the original trilogy and make it annoyingly precise to get an excellent" but outside of that, they are vibes. I went in playing Sticker Star expecting to hate it, and I ended up beating it and vibing. So yeah, the internet hates them for failing to live up to Thousand Year Door and Super Paper Mario... I am a very big fan of Thousand Year door and even I can like these much maligned games, I just wish Hammers were not so annoying to get Excellents for.... they made it so much worse... but hey, I got really good at jumps so there is that!

The combat is entirely too mediocre (or bad) to be great, in my opinion. You actively *lose* your cards (AKA your ability do even function in combat) when you go into combat in the first place, and all you gain are some coins. And in a game where coins are literally everywhere, it makes the combat pointless. And if the combat isnt needed at all outside of boss battles, it makes a large chunk of the game, the combat, very tedious and pointless. Id certainly say that the game is good though. Dialogue is funny, its very pretty looking, and the music is great. Lacks originality in the characters, story, and locales, but thats not because of the developer per se, in my opinion, and moreso the fact that theyre almost forced to make their game consist of essentially all recognizable characters from previous titles, and have a huuuge focus on the fact that everything is paper. Both of which are really annoying decisions to have to make for a game like this. Especially considering the sheer amount of originality the first three titles had.

It’s really not I’ve given it a try and the only thing good that I could say about it was that it had decent dialogue and better exploration compared to sticker star. With that said it’s combat is still mind numbingly pointless and boring. For all of you who say they are necessary in order to get more paint cards and coins please stop. It wasn’t a valid argument at launch and unfortunately it still isn’t. I got through the game perfectly fine avoiding every battle I could with a cluster of cards I didn’t need. After what Tanabe said I think it’s safe to say we won’t be seeing a decent paper Mario anytime soon if at all.

I replayed Color Splash recently and sadly I thought it was pretty bad but I can def see why people like it, has a ton of charm and unfortunately that just didn’t make up for the poor gameplay imo

Honestly I couldn’t enjoy color splash even when I’ve replayed it recently. I’ve tried to overlook the battle system and reliance on thing cards and unnecessary padding but I can’t. Props to anyone who’s able to though, hoping for the best with origami king.

Meh, seems like many ppl here enjoys seeing those generic and annoying paper toads over and over, and also enjoy watching the playthrough guides when they stuck on Koopalings boss fights. I'm ok with the battle system and different gimmick, it's just the lack of unique characters and enemies designs that piss me off.

I wish I could be so optimistic as you. I loved the first two Paper Mario games but after that the fall of the series began. Okay, I never played Sticker Star, but Color Splash was a huge disappointment. For example: You can only beat the boss fights with a special card at a specific moment but the game allows you to play that card in the battle at every single moment. THIS IS SO A BAD GAME DESIGN! I never finished the game because of things like that. The humour is great and the story is interesting but when the gameplay isn't as good as this... no. Unfortunately the Paper Mario series is a franchise which was killed by unnecessary "gameplay evolutions". I don't think that Nintendo will fix the mistakes of the past but they still have two month to convince me.

Finally some sanity. Paper Mario fans can be crazy.
