How would you judge this for someone who liked the GameCube version but didn’t think it was anything special (7/10 or so)? The backtracking (which really drained me) seems to have been improved, but I can’t shake the idea that the original fell short in other areas for me. It sounds like the remake would be about an 8/10 for me.

You'd think this would be such an easy dub for Nintendo. But Mario always has to be the focal point :/ I've dreamt about playing through Luigi's adventure for so long. More likely to happen as a mod, but if Nintendo did it, I'd probably cry haha

Yeah although it's really just a running joke. In this game, Luigi is anything but a hero and exaggerates the story. His partners tell the truth and despise him.

This version is how i imagine the originall looks with rose tinted glasses, but its not nostalgia blindness. It genuinely is just the better version. Oh, and the colors really pop on the OLED

@@mbs7994 The Thousand Year Door is overall a pretty affordable game to go trough, at least for the main story. Harder parts are completely optional. And this remake is has features that makes it even more begginer affordable, so yes. I would recommend this.

Enjoyed your review. I’ve picked it up for my kids. About the performance issue: Digital foundry, in their analysis, commented that a 60fps may not have been entirely feasible using the Switch hardware with all the visual enhancements. They compared it to Mario RPG which was fully unlocked at 60fps but struggled in some areas dropping to 30fps and argued that a locked 30fps might have made more sense in these areas. Paper Mario is demanding a lot more from the hardware than Mario RPG. In other words, yes it was a choice, but they had reasons for that choice and it’s not indefensible as some are commenting. I normally prefer performance but for this kind of remake, I’ll take the visual enhancements over performance. Edit: I’d also add that the switch 2 was intended to release in 2024 according to reports so this game would likely have been a launch title. Possibly another reason why it’s locked to 30fps on the switch. But this is pure speculation on my part.

actually lock fps to 30 makes the battery life better, on a shooter like Metroid Prime Remastered is normal that targets 60 fps cause is a shooter game, but an RPG you don't need 60 fps, you need a lot of battery life

@@lacasadebarbudo6949 Sidescrollers suffer jitters from a frame repeat every other refresh cycle (30 fps at 60Hz refresh). That's clearly evident here during the sidescrolling.

In a way Peach learned her lesson in Paper Mario Colour Splash. Instead of going to the island by herself, she went TO Mario and went WITH him to the island. She still got captured but not until after Mario got the Red paint star.

It's crazy how a 20 year old game has taken more of my attention than any of the later entries. Had they kept to the original formula, I might have finished/stuck around for every game that was released after Super Paper Mario (I thought that game was just okay, the story is what kept me going).

Let me know when you first try it, and how you feel about it. Not to sway any opinions, and I'm one to never really comment, but this game and its experience is always one I'd recommend openly and confidently. Getting the chance to play it with this remake for the first time ever, will surely be special. Much fun!

I loved the first Paper Mario on N64 when I was a wee lass and then the TTYD on GameCube came out and became one of my favorite games of all time! I really hope Nintendo gets a clue and starts making the Paper Mario games like these first two were. I can’t wait to play the remake on the Switch, I’ll be getting it soon.

I was a big fan of super Mario rpg on the Super Nintendo and of paper Mario on the n64. I owned a GameCube and somehow never tried this one. It looks great though so I look forward to giving it a try. Thanks for the video

Glad to see a review from you gents. This will also be my first time playing PM and I have to say I'm impressed with the art direction and overall production. One of the main criticisms was the hit to FPS compared to the original but honestly I have yet to notice any significant difference and the gameplay still manages to be fun and engaging. I always appreciate your reviews and happy gaming🍻

Growing up my oldest son loves this game and would play it from morning to night during the weekends while I watch a little here and there. I did got a switch a few months ago and thinking of picking this game up and play it. Just a bummer that I didn't spend time to play the game with him when he was younger like when I played Super Mario Sunshine with him then.

Yeah, this remake of paper mario TTYD has been wonderful, a lot of the visuals look a lot more like paper craft than the original did, I have played the original within the last year and I literally don't notice a difference with the 30 FPS drop outside of menus being a tad sluggish, but i don't think that's a problem with the fps and more of the engine not allowing you to pre-emptively pick before the animation is completely done for menu.

Loved the original on the GC. Unfortunately young me was starving for money so I sold this for a pocket change in some game store. Glad that I can finally revisit this game and it's just as good as I remembered it to be.

I played the original and bought this version again. I beat it a couple nights ago… and it's so much better this time around. This may be my favorite Mario RPG now, full stop. Don't regret repurchasing it myself… but I don't blame someone for not being able to justify repurchasing this when they owned the original. Btw, really appreciate you repeatedly making the distinction that this isn't a remaster or a port. I don't see anybody calling this a port, but I do hear a lot of people erroneously referring to it as a "remaster." It took just as much effort for Intelligent Systems to remake this game as it did for them to make an original Paper Mario game like Origami King and Color Splash. It was actually made with the Origami King engine.

I havent seen anyone mention some of the cut paper transitions from the original, sometimes in the new version they simply cut to a black screen while the original had a fully paper 3d transition. Im not a fan of the try again button but i do know kids arent as smart or good at games as before. Itll be a 10/10 if they fix the framerate, and the section in act 2 where u escort punies as ive done it 5 times now and it is busted. They will glitch out and despawn. (And yes i beat it and prince mush and the mole the new badges are dope)

I beat the first chapter yesterday, so far I pretty much like everything but my biggest complaints are the backtracking and how you can't speed up the character's dialogue like in other JRPGs (i.e. skip to the next line as soon as I finish reading). There are soo many cutscenes and they take so long because of how slow the text boxes unfurl or whatever. I still am enjoying the game tho and I'm hoping that the cutscenes will slow down now that I'm (hopefully) out of the tutorial parts. I only own a Nintendo Switch so I hadn't even noticed the framerate, I'm just so used to 30fps at this point lol.

@@keithpalacios9417 great aesthetic and very funny, combat is engaging because of the timing mechanics. It's just as I said all the backtracking seems so clunky and out of date and the developers seem to think no one playing the game can read faster than a 5th grader. I also wish you had the option to skip cutscenes because I could see myself replaying this sometime and not every cutscene is absolutely necessary (especially the tutorial ones).

@@keithpalacios9417 TTYD is the sequel to the N64 one. Tbh I'm not sure yet, I'll keep playing and let you know. At times it feels like I'm watching a movie more than playing a game, there are so many cutscenes that take a long time and interrupt the gameplay and it's wearing on me. If you don't mind that, then I'd definitely recommend it. But for me, when I'm playing a game I want to just get lost in the game and play it, I wish it would just let me play the damn game already lol.

Played it on my brother's gamecube when I was a kid, can't wait to FINALLY finish this game (on my own console)! Also, while watching this I suddenly remembered that each attack could have a "showy finish"...? Like a time-based button press that I looooved perfecting, though I'm not sure if I remember correctly now...

Maybe you don't realize this, but frame rate is rarely ever a choice. It most likely runs at 30 because the switch can't run a consistent 60.

Totally a day one buy and I am having a blast as someone who has played the game prior! However, if I have to give one piece of criticism, I feel like the nostalgic tunes badge is...kind of a lie. I'm playing my first run with this on and the one thing that gets under my skin is that not all of the original tracks are present and sometimes, especially in the climactic scenes of chapter 2 and 5, the new tracks, to me, are just worse by comparison with no way to turn them off. So far my least favorite track in the game (is it a track? I still hate it though) is the red scull theme Flavio sings in chapter 5. That shit is GRATING! And you have to pause and listen to it in order to read the right number of hits for the tiki heads. This will probably be the number one thing I absolutely dread if I play chapter 5 again and there is no way too fast forward with B or skip it in anyway way so that my eardrums won't bleed.

@@keithpalacios9417It is really THAT good. Mine is in the mail, but I have beaten this game at least 3 different times, and everytime it is as enjoyable as the last, and when I get it I am gonna beat it again. Definitely in my top 20-25 favorite games of all time, so much fun and funny to boot.

Kudos on the review guys! I know this is personal, but the halving of the frame rate came to allow them to push the fidelity, there are effects in play that aren’t generally available on most switch version of games such as the Screen Space Reflections. Well anyway, in game like this that does not require fast camera movement id rather have the extra fidelity. I just don’t agree with this taking points away from your score. But I can understand the perspective. Agree to disagree.

Fun game so far. A dialogue skip or fast forward is needed. While some of the writing is funny, it shouldn’t be forced. Only gripe. 9/10

60 vs 30 fps does influence gameplay in this game since it has quick time events. So yeah, it’s a trade you do for better graphics. It is okay for me but the origami king didn’t need 60fps cause of better gameplay which doesn’t need to precise.

@@makasete30as someone who played the original, I could tell. Guarding and super guarding were made easier to compensate for the frame rate cut, so whatever the reason was, they at least did some work around unlike BiS DX.

Yes, when watching a break down or comparison, it's huge. But it's subtle details that have been added such as the extra background details or the way the stage objects fold in. Glen

@SwitchUpYt agreed but also the screen space reflections on the floors and the incredibly overhauled shadow system that gives more weight and depth to the environments. Along with clarity, that feels like the record was dusted off and spit shined

In the original Japan release of the GC version it was a Frog. For some reason it was changed when made global. Still, I miss the cricket and wish we could choose between the two.

@@Artersaand TTYD is so much better. Origami King tried with its writing unlike Sticker Star and Color Splash, but the battle system still sucks beyond boss fights.

This game is amazing so far and I feel like Undertale got a bit of inspiration from this game. The sense of humor is similar at parts & some concepts are the same

I preordered, and picked up on day of release. Both to get my preorder bonus, and to add to the overall sales numbers that make a Nintendo want to make more of this type of thing… It won’t get played till at least Christmas though, as there are way too many other games on my list to play. This will be a good gift under the tree that the kids get to give me, that they have no idea about… 😅

These are the exact same game mechanics as the original Paper Mario Game, which is on Nintendo Switch Online. Just saying you can get a great experience for next to nothing comparatively

I'm liking this game but not loving it. The backtracking drives me nuts and then sometimes I get lost in the pipes 😂 I'm enjoying myself but just not as much as I was hoping. That's hype for you 🤷🏾‍♀️

@@TheCodeda okay, good. Chapter 4 still has some issues, but the backtracking is still better in the remake. Meanwhile, chapter 7 was by far the worst chapter in the original because of the backtracking. Thank god it’s much better here. Also, I would hope you get used to it because the world of TTYD is fantastic. My second favorite in the series. It would be a shame if the backtracking ruined it, which it very well could in the original.

The 30 fps and slow text is bugging me so much. Like good game, I don't think it's as great as everyone else. But it's a bit upseting because replability is way down since the game moves like a snail.

As someone that doesn’t like turn based RPGs much, I’m having an amazing time with this game. Picked Hellblade 2 and this on the same day. 30 min in HB2 and 10h into this so far. Tells you everything :D

Played Mario RPG a couple of months ago. Although I liked it overall, it was too simplistic for me. The final boss was fun. I might get this for my son if he shows interest.

Origami King is a lot more interesting from a gameplay perspective, and has charming writing. Might be a good one to play along with your son!

Mario Odyssey has to interlace it (showing one half of the pixels in one frame and another half in the other frame) to run at 60 in handheld.

That’s really my only gripe with the game, but it’s not a deal breaker for me since they at least altered the timing for guards and action commands to compensate.

The Animal Crossing-style voice samples whenever characters are talking was such an unfortunate inclusion. It’s so distracting to read the various Toad’s dialogue all being accompanied by the same squawk as the Toads in the mainline games, especially when you consider the deadpan delivery many of these lines need in order to produce the intended comic effect. The Paper Mario series exists in another universe than the mainline series-these aren’t the same characters. The Paper Mario characters have always been mute, allowing the player to imagine their voices. Paper Luigi’s dialogue isn’t written with an Italian accent, for instance. I wish Nintendo would include an option to switch the voices back to the original typing sound effect.

I hadn't bought a Paper Mario game, since Sticker Star. And that was before I knew how much they screwed up the formula. Thankfully, that's now changed now that we finally have a proper remake to the TTYD, minus the woke changes, half of the FPS, and the new jazzy music being worst than the original zany soundtrack. It would be nice to see the original get a proper glow up too, but I think a proper sequel for the next entry would be the way to go.
