I'm sure a lot of you already know, but on May 23rd 2024 the remake for the GameCube CLASSIC Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door will release for Nintendo Switch!
I'll be playing the game LIVE the second it releases at MIDNIGHT! GET HYPE!
KZfaq does have a 12 hour stream limit, so I probably won't finish the game in one single stream. I'll be back with more once I've gotten some sleep.
Also keep in mind I won't be reading that much text or talk to NPC's. This first playthrough will be a first look at mechanics, oddities, classic exploits and general game-feel/improvements. A more slow and casual look is sure to come later.

I will of course try to pay attention to what's new. The Shadow Sirens and Vivian changes come to mind. Though I am also very excited for all the changed and BRAND NEW music.

imagine, like, this game is a test for developers & depending on how well this game sells could bring forth the mario story/PM64 remake - & that would be a true undertaking from there

the random survey Europe put out might imply that instead, they might intend on bringing paper mario back to THIS style.. a much cooler idea tbh

I'm surprised they didn't remake 64 first, as the upgrade would have been much more noticeable. They should have saved this one for the Switch's successor.

FYI, tornado jump is actually very slightly buffed, it now hits the original target twice (initial jump and descending tornado) I haven't triedd it yet on a non-flying enemy though.

so it hits the target twice and ignores defense on both hits? If flying enemies had high defense, it might actually be helpful. Good thing the high defense enemies are on the ground! Even super bosses!

I like how each area's battle theme still has the battle theme letmotif, but there's so different in theme they're like their own songs

Surprised, but definitely pleased by how much they could slip in for Vivian, and go in a way that respects more the japanese game (like this, or the recipe for trial stew if i understood correctly) ! I wonder if the other localisations that already had the trans part of Vivian kept their translations or changed (for exemple both French and Italian had the trans part of Vivian already in since the Gamecube version, with the Italian version going as far to say that, in her bio or desc, Vivian was a boy before, and is proud to be a girl now, if my information is right). It's cool that it stayed as tasteful as their original inclusions, maybe even better in a way, with how Vivian relates to shadow Mario with the struggles she had identifying herself like how Mario did losing his name.

The Japanese dialogue for Vivian did indeed change. She uses feminine pronouns for the whole game and the scene where she talks about her past is different. She says that she “Has the body of a boy but the heart of a cute girl.” Which is apparently a pretty common way trans people describe themselves in Japan. Pretty neat, seems like she’s transfem across all versions of the game now, and it’s more respectfully done in the languages where she already was.

@@EmmyEntropy2000 Dang that's very very neat, before iirc it was aludded in the JP version, but not outright said, but now it seems wide spread and made clear without making it pushed, that's great ! I feel like more media should take note on how it's about having a character that just happens to be trans or else like that, and not having their whole person revolving around it.

Although the remake here is quite dodgy about Vivian's transgender status, as it seems the localizers decided to censor Beldam's misgendering of Vivian for her own amusement as well as Goombella's Tattle not mentioning seeing Vivian as a boy who cross-dresses.

@@alexanderrego1998 they don’t even include any of the opposite sex teasing in the new Japanese version lol. She’s very clearly stated to be trans in pretty much all of the languages for the remakes. The devs have even been outspoken about this online, saying they really wanted to preserve that aspect of her character.

I completely forgot you can't get Keel Mangoes on your first visit to Keelhaul Key in the Gamecube version. I'm not even mad though that Flavio won't take them. That's honestly pretty funny.

2:10:18 So what's actually going on here is that the Japanese script for the 2024 remake was changed to make Vivian's trans identity more explicit (because it was de-emphasized in the Chapter 2 scene in the remake). When Vivian is talking about the bullying she receives from her sisters, the literal translation of the Japanese script in the remake has her say (I'm not a Japanese speaker, I'm copying this from someone who compared the 2024 and 2004 Japanese scripts and noted the addition here) "I have the body of a boy, but the heart of a girl!", a turn of phrase that's pretty common in the Japanese trans community. In western trans communities, "Body of X but heart of a Y" isn't an especially common way for trans people to refer to themselves, so they revised it to emphasize Vivian's self-discovery (i.e. she "realized" she's their sister and not their brother). I agree the wording is kind of clunky, because the localizers are obviously still reluctant to be super explicit, but it at least directly acknowledges Vivian's queer identity in a way the 2004 localization didn't, and I'm really happy that she's finally being allowed out of the closet.

Personally I don't see the wording as clunky. If anything, it makes the concept much more understandable to the games target audience of all ages (like young children). Gotta teach them the easiest way you can, right? Honestly her just straight-up SAYING "I'm transfem" or something along those lines would sound more awkward to me, like she's reading off a script. But also the fact they made it clear in any way, maybe not explicitly saying she's trans, tells me it may be more of a limitation of the translation team; I assume, at least for now, they just can't be as explicit as they may want to.

@@squiddu I agree her just saying "I'm transfem" would be a lot more awkward, but the phrasing they did go with has some 'wind-drag' to it, to borrow CJ the X's vernacular. She says "I'm not happy with my sisters", then in the next bubble says "It took me a while to realize I was their sister not their brother, so the bullying is heavier". The _implication_ of these lines together is that there's a transphobic element to Beldam's behavior (which there probably is!) but then calls attention to her own self-discovery before looping back to the bullying. If I were writing that line, I'd probably prefer something like "Their usual bullying felt heavier after I realized I was their sister... not their brother". I'd drop the 'truth is' preposition (it's an artifact of the original Japanese line) or maybe go with something like, to have her speaking in active voice instead, "Their usual bullying feels heavier now that I realize I am their sister... not their brother".

This is old so everyone probably knows already, but you can still get the stache brothers puzzle wrong and fight the embers. Tbh I'm not sure why it didn't work for fatguy, it worked for me hitting the blue brother the wrong amount of times.

Kinda non-important in the long run, but I actually thought you DID wind up the hammer enough for a Super Hammer first strike (the remake requires you to wind up most of the way for it to count) I suspect slamming the block next to the Goomba may have been what prevented it in this case. I actually remember something similar from the original GCN release, where missing a Spin Jump but having the enemy walk into you during the "recoil" only counts as a normal Jump first strike lol

Aww, I really wanted to see if the pit changed level 100 reward, but I’d rather find that out myself, also I am still out of town so if you do a pit stream, I once again can’t be there

To be fair to Stampede and ceiling enemies Given its a stampede i assume its the same logic as Quake Hammer, their getting hit by the tremors and not the Yoshis No clue about flying enemies tho

It's funny how much he forgets about new mechanics or doesn't bother experimenting. He'll comment on something being weird and not realize it's intended to interact with the omnidirectional hammer, or not try jumping over railings or viewing completion percentage on the map screen.

2:10:07 - I mean, not really, imo. Unless someone's totally unfamiliar with the concept of a trans woman, the meaning is pretty obvious. 2:10:21 - ... got away with what? Her being trans? That was heavily implied in the original japanese, and explicit in some other languages. 2:11:50 - the sad part is it doesn't even need to be changed... at least here in the US, even 20 years after this was written, fiber is still unavailable in much of the country. 2:39:30 - LMAO 3:13:15 - you reverse a poison mushroom to make it a healthy mushroom, of course! :D

I’m at least glad they didn’t LITERALLY use the word ‘trans’ or I’d be pretty suspect of NOA considering the circumstances. Maybe I was a bit paranoid since that one schizo claiming to be a translator made a scene about it and made it seem way more preachy.

It baffles me why would *anyone* want to use the word trans for the dialogue, for me it's as out of tone as a character straight up mentioning Jews, it sounds like a 4th wall joke, not like something a character would genuinely say in their world. The only way the word trans doesn't sound out of place, would be if the game's world is a parallel to our own in modern times, it would fit Bayonetta, but not Fire Emblem.

They handled the Vivian thing the best way possible. The way it is worded, you can take it as a trans mention, but also that she was teased and bullied by being called a boy (common teasing from what I have heard and read about). This is great, since it lets people choose what they want to feel about it, without throwing it in your face, AND it stays true to the original source material. A total win-win in my book.

Common, though there's no indication that that teasing is what Vivian is referring to, though If it was she'd probably say something like they used to bully me by calling me their brother If she was assigned as a girl from a start it's not much of a "realization" moment Also people existing isn't really much of an in your face thing but that's another story 😓

Eh... no, the Japanese remake still did it better, they kept Beldam scolding Vivian for calling herself "sister", and they added the little bit of nuance on chapter 4. The dialogue itself is something like: "My body may be that of a boy, but my heart is that of a cute girl!" So why is it better? Because it's still vague enough to imply whatever you want, but it also doesn't come out of literally nowhere unlike here.

I don't like how they handled Vivian's gender stuff in this, they took out Beldam bullying her for being a man, and the line when she joins you feels WAY too direct; it's like they're turning to face the audience, speaking directly to the player and asking "Are you happy now?". Should have kept the nastiness, and kept it very slightly vague. But then they also removed the goomba cat calling, so it's not the only bad change.

At least the Vivian change isn't in your face and irritating like alot of other modern slop games. Could care less about this being in it, which is good imo. I don't hold high standards for messages or stuff like this being in videos games so that a blessing coming from me lol. Its subtle and basically one text box and doesn't feel like its pandering and doesn't feel like i am playing a piece of propaganda, which makes people like me enjoy a game. This is what I call a good inclusion. Nintendo really out here breaking new bounds lol.

just started the vod, sounds good. i have a more aggressive opinion about the whole thing, but this sounds fine. i hate if its shoved in your face. made me prolly hate the whole thing more.

It was still not as good as it could have been. The Japanese version changed the chapter 4 dialogue a little bit, which adds some nuance to Vivian's thing but ultimately is the same, and they didn't removed Beldam scolding Vivian for calling herself a "sister". In essence, NoA tried to had their cake and eat it too, the dialogue somehow feels worse because it was simply put there, with no foreshadowing.
