I first knew of this island 50 years ago studying WWII history, that it is is still unchanged today is a rare gem in today's world. I truly hope PNG Gov't keeps New Ireland WITHOUT big, fancy, modern resorts that cater to rich people only with limited benefit to local people, tourism as presented here in local Guesthouses, more benefits to local people as guides and instructors and a complete respect for the local culture and quiet way of life is the way to do it, and will attract more middle class people as visitors who are much more numerous than rich people in Australia, east Asia, North America and Europe. Tourism in Nepal and Bhutan might be a good model to pursue for New Ireland.

I mapped the Island on a paltry government budget 51 years ago, with no transport! A very different place then, trying to hire worn-out Landrovers or Toyotas to cross the powerful rivers down the east coast. The Lelet plateau climb on foot was the easiest. Further south the mountains were very steep and tall...I never found any of their malagans, carved idols...

People are friendly, accommodating, and respectful to others. They're glad to know new faces, learning filipino cultures, and experiencing filipino hospitality. Truly, A place worth visiting. The local government should promote the tourism industry for the benefit of the local people, And if course for the traveller to experience Nature at it's BEST. Thank you to the uploader.

Great video! Eco-tourism is an excellent way providing the average man and woman with access to cash without destroying their natural environment. Look how many millions of people visit Bali annually despite Bali having much less natural beauty and fewer cultures than PNG. Hopefully the PNG government continues to promote sustainable eco-tourism in PNG.

The name got nothing to do with Genocide. We were colonised by Britain and German. There are German names like Finchafen, Dregefen, and names like New Hanover etc. Our Melanesian brothers and sisters in West Papua were colonised by the Dutch. The controversial agreement had cost our family over in West Papua to succumb to torture, killings, illegal land grabbing and destruction to the native culture. We in Papua New Guinea pray that UN must intervene and grant them freedom from Indonesia same like East Timor.
