Pete at Cedric & Ada Gear and Outdoors did testing on BD1N. His conclusions were that BD1N has better corrosion resistance than S30V and that BD1N had slightly less edge retention than S30V.

I've had a UKPK in BD1N for a year now, bought from the factory store in Golden just after it got the upgrade from BD1. In terms of edge retention at the same angle, it's in the same general class as S30V, but it has better edge stability at narrow angles. Narrow angles cut better, and stay usably sharp longer as long as they don't roll or chip.

recently got the para 3 LW and for some reason i just really like it...more than I expected to. its one of those knives where you have 'better' more expensive knives...but allot of time, you end up choosing the para 3 over them anyway. cant really put my finger on why exactly but its just really nice. Great action, liking the compression lock, just fun.

A bit dated, but I just dropped $122 for the mint green BHQ special run of the Para 3 in CPM-M4. Most I’ve dropped for a pocket knife. I’ve had my eye on Spyderco’s for a bit. This one looked interesting to make me bite. It was that or the Deka. The Bugout scales feel flimsy to me.

Have the bugout. Carried it for 2 days and an Omega spring broke. Sent it in to get replaced (bc Benchmade won't send springs out). Got it back after a week. Same day the opposite spring broke. Beyond pissed. Found a guy on eBay that makes the springs for $6 a pair which is what shipping my knife to Benchmade cost. Installed the new springs and has been working fine. So long story short. If you get a bugout got to eBay and look up Omega springs and just order them. Also, probably going to replace my bugout with Para 3 LW

Interesting! I'm left-handed and have this same Bugout. I've also just ordered the exact same Para 3 Lightweight. I've carried the bugout as my main EDC knife for several months now. As much as I love it for a number of reasons, I do have a few gripes with it... 1. I HATE the pocket clip. It's too short and too rigid for sliding on without using two hands if I'm wearing sweat-pants (which I do a lot in the winter). 2. I wish there was jimping on the blade!! It 'bugs' me that it's not where my thumb likes to fall when holding the knife. Though it doesn't bother me too much, the knife is also a little off centre. That said, overall it is a really great knife. I paid £150 in the UK for it and have just ordered the Para 3 LW for £107. I look forward to putting the latter through it's paces and see how it weighs up against the Bugout. Thanks for the nice review!

Thanks you two. Another fun video! You bring up a great point again, in this video, that I see a lot of newer knife buyers not considering. In not deciding to choose a slightly better carry knife, over one that may be slightly better in hand. Especially for those who may only use their knife once or twice a day (very little in hand time). In that instance, when the knife is in the pocket maybe 15 hours a day. 5-7 days a week. For many, it's not better to have a knife that is slightly better in hand, but more of a pain to carry, if it's going to spend most of its 105 pocket-hours a week, being carried. : - )

Para 3 LW vs Manix 2 LW. Which is overall better for EDC?
@frederickj.7702
@frederickj.7702 4 жыл бұрын
@ James ze... Going off a Para 3 G10 I owned for, like, 'five minutes'... I say Manix 2 LW all day long! It is supremely versatile in use -- multiple ways to grip and direct the tip -- and just plain satisfying... and it has character the P3 in any form lacks, oh, so noticeably! The LW is the best all around Manix for most kinds of practical, EDC use. I am thrilled to have snagged my CPM Cru-Ware Manix 2 limited ed. for when and where I might need its advantages; but the LW is the true jewel. Don't pay FRN / FRCP dissers any mind. Think smart.

I don't get why it's the bugout. Isn't the mini griptilan sheepsfoot a much closer comparison? It's closer in blade size, weight, opening method and price. Are Spyderco fans worried the para3 LW might lose to the new s30v mini grips? I've got a bugout, mini grip sheepsfoot and para3 lw and the mini grip is the closer... and better knife.

Though I like the blade of the P3LW more (under 3" edge for a day/night edc, please, thanks), I don't love their S30V. Also, I'm not a fan of the wire clip; it lacks necessary tension IME. I have not handled the Bugout, but it's def slimmer in the pocket. The AXIS lock is truely ambidextrous and it's as strong as you could want (and it flicks great once broken in). P3: the daggum stop pin on all the Spyderco knives I own are all some TOOL STEEL and rust af. Why? Does the stop pin really need to be 68HRC. I mean, wouldn't a hard stainless work better? (Yes, it'd be chippy. But. It's a STOP PIN.) A 154CM hardened up sounds about right-boom, done. But no, I have to use steel wool and a pick to scour my stupid stop pin once every month or two, then try (again) to stave off the rust with some protectant (tip: Johnson paste wax). I hope Eric & Sal think all that over. Verdict: Benchmade takes it in a split decision.

So after some time of having the bugout I'm a little dissapointed (although I'm more disappointed in Benchmade in general) as I've come to notice that the one I got has an uneven bevel and for it to have a smooth action it ends up having a fair amount of horizontal play. Also one of the omega springs broke so I replaced it with one of the springs in my Ganzo. Now I compare that to my Ganzo G729 that came perfectly sharp, has no play even with a very smooth action (on one spring), and a totally even bevel for a fraction of the price. It really bums me out becasue I was really excited to have a Benchmade but when you take the price into account with its current performance (or lack there of) it just doesn't seem worth it. I mean really, if you're paying higher end "premium" prices then it should be expected to work correctly and not have the problems that it does.

You know that spyderco is going to produce sprint runs of the para 3 lightweight. The bugout is so popular. However Benchmade doesn’t do sprint runs! Some bugout sprint runs in different colors with different anodized thumb studs and standoffs would be so cool. A coated M4 bugout would be epic! The only problem is Spyderco sprints are almost the same price as originals but Benchmade would charge WAY more for a sprint
@frederickj.7702
@frederickj.7702 4 жыл бұрын
@ Joseph A... Yep, they probably would. But why M4... on a Bugout? This makes sense? You're gonna torque *any* Bugout blade *hard* , left and right and... whatever? "Horses for courses", Joseph. Now, K390 *could* make some sense for a relatively thin slicing blade (ref., my own Spyderco Urban)... *if* you have what it takes to put a truly wicked edge on it. There's a difference between "toughness" and "edge stability", and why either might matter.
@PunnyRabbit
@PunnyRabbit 5 жыл бұрын
One thing I want to see for the future of the Para3 LW is for Spyderco to apply their CQI and put some steel around the pivot area on the FRN side (the Sage 5 LW seemingly will have steel liners so maybe that's not an issue for it). The stop pin going directly into FRN isn't confidence-inspiring. The Bugout at least has the stop pin going into metal on both sides first.

@PunnyRabbit 5 жыл бұрын
@@loyalpoehler3991 Eh, FRN isn't the issue; it's the Lightweight after all. It's just strange to have only one side with metal when the Sage 5 LW and the Bugout has metal on both sides.
@frederickj.7702
@frederickj.7702 4 жыл бұрын
Here's the 'scientific' fact of the matter -- neither you nor anyone else out in "the community" commenting negatively knows whether or not the one side of pin into FRN thing is a problem or not. Talk is cheap, especially coming from the non-responsible, "2-cents" invested masses... and Eric G. has a lot on the line. While I certainly understand the concern, I know what the smart money bet is here for *most* users. If having to... only just maybe (pure speculation)... make a warranty claim six years down the line is going to ruin your life or something, geez... no further comment. Maybe a lot of the dissers were never really much of a prospective *purchaser* for a LW Para 3 in the first place... which would explain a lot. If you really *like* the fairly one-of-a-kind Para 3 LW otherwise, and truly know what you want, for Pete's sake, just buy it!

@frederickj.7702 4 жыл бұрын
Agreed on the blue, Joshua, but the 'ranger green' ain't bad. I'm not much tempted to play $cales $wap with my new Bugout, having had it in hand. With the weight of the P. scales added, there are suddenly some viable competitors in the light carry weight game, any number of which might be said to look more 'polished' and better integrated overall. But I would say that the the combination of thin, lightweight blade stock and practical, sweet spot length on the Bugout's blade -- as well as your getting a tried and true, predictably performing S30V -- may be tough to duplicate elsewhere in a knife you really want. Good luck with yours!

From the results of some of the cutting/edge retention tests the BD1N is around 85-90% of what s30v is in its current factory form. I'll take that for the lower price point. The ergos on the Para 3 LW win for me hands down and with the blade length at 2.92" make it MUCH less worrisome when it come to NC random knife rules from town to town(I travel and use my knife in public in my job). As far as benchmade goes I'll stick with my couple 940s since blade length wouldn't be an advantage for the bugout and fit and finish is a no contest with the weight of my 940-1 being nearly equal. This will be my first Spyderco due to this model's ergos finally making sense to me and the compression lock helping my fidget obsession. Let's hop they redesign the Manix LW to smooth out some of the edges and I'll have TWO Spydercos. LOL!

@ Chris Hall... I do the love the Manix 2 LW -- the balance in hand is SO much better for *EDC tasks* than is the experience from my new CPM Cru-Ware / G10 Manix 2! No complaints from me other than the two obvious negatives -- the tall profile in pocket, and the rather unpleasant to handle plastic ball cage assembly -- now that my LW is broken in. But as you seem to suggest, there really isn't any good reason for the FRCP handle to be so blocky in appearance and feel. It could simply be more 'modern'. The original Para 3 in G10, BTW, was for me more like "hate it" within 45 seconds! Such a ploddingly derivative, uninspired, all around mediocrity. The LW version looks MUCH better to me... almost tempting... but I personally prefer a much less steep thumb ramp in use -- Manix 2, Sage 5, Native 5, Domino, etc. Anyway, I'd just say go for the Manix in BD1N, Chris. Forget dreaming of perfection and just get on with it... :-)

I think what we all want to know is: Can we switch the blade from the LW with the original s30v g10? Are they going to do a LW Para 2? What about the Tanto Para 2? *Also making a delica/endura 5 with a finger choil and wire clip!* Compression lock on the manix? I've been giving some thought to a military with a compression lock called the Remilitary?

Just got my Para3 in M4. It feels like there is nothing there. So light I don’t know what to think of it. I will say the plastic is pretty solid. There’s no give. I can flick it open. Getting it to flick shut is more challenging, but it is brand new. It is migrating to the cool side of the force. Everybody makes I thing on how the Bugout is a bit over 1/2 oz lighter. I don’t need a knife to be any lighter than the Para 3. I can’t feel it my pocket. It is way light. To me the difference is inconsequential. I like it in the hand. It is well thought out clearly for a small knife to fit so well into my largish hands. I can tell they put a lot of thought into that aspect of the design. The blade centering is a tiny bit off. I think it is due to the bronze washer offsetting the blade towards the other side because the side of the blade with the washer is pushed out just a bit. Couldn’t care less about that. Getting used to it but my initial impressions are favorable.

The bugout is not that much more expensive - less than $30 the last time I looked. But the steel is a significant improvement over the para3 light weight. Give me an upgraded steel in a sprint run para3 light weight, and I would take that in a heart beat.

I don't understand why they only used 1 washer on the PM 3 lightweight.
@fundoodman

Because the other washer is built in to the liner on the other side. The other washer is plastic, but hey it works. Love this knife!

@@fundoodman yeah but why wouldn't they just use a bronze washer on both sides? To save a penny? They action still looks great from all the videos I've seen. Just seems odd to me. I'll probably end up picking one up.

Yeah, I really don't know but it works pretty darn good somehow. Had mine taken apart the other day, it's nicely done. I wouldn't have ever come up with the built in washer idea but it does work just fine. Hope you have a good experience if you get one, I like it.

@ Shaun Harrison... I betcha the self-lubricating "plastic" side fouls much less with grit and is easier to clear than the phosphor bronze side. PB is *not* "simply better". Ask Rick Hinderer, if you don't believe me. But no, I don't know offhand what the *design* rationale for the 'halvesies' approach is either; but I am confident that this was a performance-design decision, and not a "cheaping out" decision as some know-nothings suggest.

One wonders when/if these knives will use LC200N for the blades. Especially the Bugout given its marketing personality; but also the Para 3 since Spyderco makes Salt versions of so many....

I still think that the big sell for me would be if Spyderco made a standard length Native compression lock. I don't like the profile of the Para line that much. Given that the Lil Native has been relatively successful I would imagine the Native Compression would be even more so. The Sage LW and Para LW prove that it can be done with the FRN handles.
@frederickj.7702
@frederickj.7702 4 жыл бұрын
@ S M... The short blade on the Native 5, given its profile, is not a great prospect for a fiddly , bouncy compression lock -- a wholly unnecessary "toy" feature, in this hypothetical case. The Native 5 rockets open with "crack" using a comfortable and natural feeling, fast thumb 'walk'. What are you imagining you'd be getting out of a second rate compression lock implementation? All 4 of my Native 5's close *fast* and *satisfyingly* one-handed every time -- "drop shutty" to 90-110 degrees, then "pop", closed with a touch of the thumb. My advice: learn to be more skeptical of the hype and social media showoffs... and think it through more thoroughly. Have you *had* a properly set up Native 5?!

No, I don’t think it will stay BD1N forever if you go way way back to when the Manix 2 LW was first released it was also in that steel now it’s running all sorts of other options like s110v and more expensively Maxemet in some places. I am no expert but patterns with Spyderco seem to go pretty similarly

The optional blade steels for the Manix 2 LW are not very practical for *most* EDC users. There are certainly *not* "all sorts of...options"... not in the LW versions (no more XHP "exclusive" editions -- a long gone blip on the radar -- forthcoming anytime soon that I know about, just for one example).

Haunted house??? I missed that one...I do not own the BugOut, but I have the PM 3 lightweight. I love it. And plenty fidgety. I’m just not a big fan of stud open knives...and I’m a big Spyderco fan. Soo...it’s would take a pretty high review to talk me into a stud knife, even if I know the BugOut has a huge fan base.

I'm thinking of a winner for Benchmade. A 3.5" og 4" bugout, shouldn't add much to the stupidly light weight, and have what you need primarily on a knife: A blade. Benchmade, just bloody steal the wireclip, common, you can do it!

I'm ok with SV30, but BD1N is fine and I can see it being a work horse in the Para 3 form factor, just like the Dodge RAM 1500, Mototrtrend's truck of the year for 2019.

A "work horse" until the Fiat-Chrysler junk starts to fall apart. I would hope that even my cheapest EDC rotation knife, a Tangram, has a more practical and satisfying service life.
