I learned "at ease" when I was in the Cub Scouts. Then we moved and I was frankly astounded to discover that my new fellow Cubs seemed to think "at ease" was basically "smoke 'em if you got 'em."

Ha! Rest was taught in BCT but past that it was like a myth or military urban legend. "You can rest when you sleep, lights out at 21:00. Attention, half-right face..."

My not-exactly-boyfriend-but-definately-best-friend is a 35yo vet, 5 year's service.. I just ran in the front room and yelled "AttennnnTION! and he jumped up.. I said, "Parade REST!" and he snapped into position so fast I felt my ovaries jump.. THANK you 🙏

As someone who’s recently been in the Norwegian royal guard, i feel all the movements are way too slow and really not snappy enough👀 plus all the poses look too relaxed

They are. Especially parade rest. Not sure what he was doing there. Your arms are supposed to be raised a moderate height on your back, not just at ease.

Thank you, is there ever a time when the hands would be held resting in front of the body? Recently I have seen some news clips with soldiers standing at rigid attention but their hands are held in front of their solar plexus. This looked weird, as I never had to do that at merchant marine academy, but maybe there's a new attention stance?

I never joined the army because at ease was never that easy to me. Seemed rather up tight still. To me at ease means never joining the military.
