I agree. An honest, informative review that's also fun to watch and easy to relate to. As a lifelong Paradigm fan I always love it when someone listens to a pair for the first time and they experience the magic and performance this brand brings to the table at each price point. Paradigm rules.

Love the channel man. I love the focus of the channel on good value products. Honestly love the attitude and delivery also. The no bull approach goes along with how I choose my speakers and components. No bull, no snake oil. The use of specific songs to demonstrate specific properties of the speakers is always a great idea and isn't done enough in reviews. I'm watching your subscriber numbers probably as closely as you are and can't wait for them to grow to the numbers that you deserve. I will be sharing some of your vids in hopes of gathering some more subscribers for you. Keep it up man.

Glad you mentioned the R-51M speakers. I can get the Paradigm Monitor SE speakers (bookshelf/center) for the same price as the Klipsch Reference series (R-51M bookshelf/center), but I'm going for the Paradigm speakers. Your review along with several others had me choosing the Paradigm speakers. Paradigm being a Canadian company also helps, since I'm Canadian.

One of the things I love about your channel is the referencing of specific tracks, and moments of tracks, and what to listen for. It would be cool if you did more of this. Maybe even while episodes. Maybe even field suggestions, test and vet them yourself, and give feedback on what you hear, etc. I’d gut someone with one of those knives for more content like that.

Back in the 90's, when I started dipping my big toe into the cheap audio hobby, there was an actual stereo hi-fi shop a few towns away that sold the full line of Paradigm speakers, and had them all available for demo. Went there to hear the Atoms', but wasn't very impressed. What did impress me were Paradigm's relatively inexpensive tower speakers.....wow! But those were to big for the space I had. I went back to that shop to audition a more expensive Paradigm that I didn't bother with the first time: the Paradigm Studio 20 bookshelf speaker, which I think sold for around $600 a pair. Too rich for my blood, but I heard so much good buzz about them, I wanted to hear them for myself. I was AMAZED that such a tiny speaker could sound so rich and accurate! I felt bad I couldn't take a pair home with me, as they are still THE BEST small speakers I've ever heard. Sadly, Paradigm discontinued them. But it's good to find out Paradigm is still around. So many brands from the 90's are out of the audio/visual business. Thanks so much for giving these little guys a try, it seems Paradigm still has some magic left in their designs.

I have the Studio 20 V2s and until I hit the lottery they are my end game speakers. I've auditioned probably 35 to 40 different speakers in the under $2000 price range and so far nothing has made me want to change speakers. The Studios just do everything perfectly and make listening to anything and everything a total thrill every time.

Hi buddy, found you by accident, but loving the few reviews I heard so far. For me the best part of your analysis is how you tie it back to music (hello!) and specific songs and specific instrumentation within those songs. And it so happens, many of the songs mentioned are the same ones I am very familiar with, so it helps me understand what you're describing. Really good, thanks.

This channel is so appreciated and timely! Not all of us want to spend thousands of dollars on a system for pleasure listening! I'm looking for a new pair of bookshelves to pull double duty on a desk for mixing and listening. Because of this, I want them to be as neutral as possible, especially between two to eight kilohertz. excellent sound stage and imaging are a bonus, but most important are neutrality, and ability to be in proximity to a wall. Off axis performance would also be a big bonus. Of the speakers you've heard / reviewed, what do you think would best fit this profile? Tyia! I subscribed a little while ago, and will continue to enjoy watching these reviews! You've got something great going for you here!

This might sound odd, but check out the Sony SC5 bookshelf speakers with the super tweeters. They blew me away when I heard them on a good amp and very crisp and neutral with great imaging without toe in. Nice wide sounding speakers and voices sound very natural. Probably a step below these Paradigms but much cheaper.

I've been doing the mid-fi thing for quite a while. I used to get relatively hung up on detail, resolution and things like that. Now days and really for the past 7 or 8 years, I've pretty much settled down into a 'I just want it to sound right' category. That's not to say I want a speaker with little detail or lesser resolving capabilities, I just basically want vocals and acoustic instruments sound pretty close to natural and for the speaker not to do anything too 'wrong' on the top end or bottom end. PSB and Paradigm have become basically my favorite reasonable cost speakers. Elac is up there as well. SVS do many things well and I could live with most of those that I've heard but so many speakers seem to have one flaw... either too big of midbass bump to add weight to the sound or a bit too elevated of a top end to sound a bit more exciting. Those qualities are initially intriguing but almost always result in a drawback when the honeymoon wears off.

About 25 years ago,I first came across Paradigm in Vancouver and was deeply impressed, especially the bass was so clean, tight and balanced from the bookself speakers. Paradigm makes some great speakers. ( I have 5 or 6 pairs ). The Atoms & Titans have always punched way above heir weight. My last house I had a 26 x 26 garage. I rotated many sets of speakers through there. BUT. I had one pair permanently mounted up on the wall. tilted down and toed in, about a foot of space behind them, They were an older version of Atoms with a little help from a PDR 8" sub. Wasn't as good as the systems in some nightclubs I worked in, but those little speakers amazed me and anyone who heard them. That was several versions ago. Just sayin.

I had Paradigm bookshelf speakers back in the 90s as a teen. They were great fir the price. Sometimes bass was a bit much. I gave them to my brother because I changed to a Onkyo 7.1 theater system that sucks for music so I recently bought these newer Atoms and they still sound great for my master bedroom listening to Tool, Zeppelin, Steely Dan, Hendrix. I'm curious to go up in hifi with floorstanding speakers.

Paradigm's a Canadian company, but it's good. I wish they made the SE Atom cabinet in that nice light cherry colour like the old, classic Paradigm Performance Series Atom of aboot twenty years ago. Or maybe even walnut. Black is bad-ass, but white, while being a nice change, shows the dirt and scratches too easily. I am looking for a smaller speaker now, like Polk Rti4. Plks upgrade to Polk RT25i. Both featured in Stereophile. I like the way the Atom driver is 5.5" instead of 5.25" like most speakers its size. Maybe that is why it has such good bass for a smaller speaker. I remember hooking up a pair of Paradigm Atom V3s up to my 60 Watt RMS Sony Mini System. sounded awesome with the "Groove" button pressed, and held their bass well. Hopefully they eventually make a Monitor SE Titan with 6.5" driver. In light cherry. Then I'm sold. I used to have a pair of Titan V3s back in 2003, and also a pair of Mini Monitor V3s. Even the Titans, driven by a high-current Marantz SR5300, made "Contra: Shattered Soldier" for PS2 sound like floor standers even sitting on top of my TV cabinet.

I have the old Atom v2 from 1999 and even those are awesome speakers, turn them up enough and I can feel them! They are the same dimensions as the (horrible) Polk audio t15s, and sound twice as big, and they are the old ones! I have the Titan v2 as well, the 6.5 inch version that they quit selling, and while they are not too muddy sounding, they definitely sound that way in comparison to the atoms.

I haven't heard this speaker in person, because there's no independent dealers anymore, but from all the KZfaq videos I've listened to of speakers in this price range, this is one of the best sounding ones, with fast and punchy bass, rich and clear mids, and really shimmery highs that are VERY airy, without ever sounding too bright or shrill, but just right. That's the thing that a really good metal dome tweeter can do better, IMO, than a soft dome. They can just be crisper and airier than the soft domes, whereas a bright soft dome can sound too edgy sometimes, like Polks tend to do. I may have to replace my Wharfedale Diamonds with these, and I can't say that about Klipsch, SVS, Emotiva, or even Elac, from what I hear on KZfaq anyway. These just sound almost perfectly balanced across the whole sound spectrum, and I've never thought that of Paradigms before. And, they seem to have a very 3D sound too. You're costing me money Randy!

Wow, that was fast work! (Often) agree with your observation re: 5.25 woofered speakers. You used the word balance; I might go with "coherence". They often seem to "disappear" and float an image a bit better. I can remember checking out earlier Paradigm lines and usually finding more "magic" in the Atom over the Mini-Monitor. In some ways, my NHT SB1s beat the SB2. Paul Barton downsized his famous Alphas from 6.5 to 5.25. I reckon there's just less sonic ground to cover. And yet.... Bass. Volume. Scale. Room size. My smaller Diamond 10.1s are beautifully balanced near field in an 9 x 15' room, but in the 12 x 15' next room they're too thin sounding, and it takes the bigger Diamond 225s to attain that balance and fill up that back wall with full-size people. Horses for courses, I reckon. A speaker that might bridge that 5.25-6.5 gap in terms of coherence might be the NHT SuperOne 2.1. Right now, they're $360 a pair at Amazon, but they have been about $260 at times. At that price, they would make for a great review subject, IMHO. Thanks for the review. In years past, Atom reviews were everywhere, but they seem to have almost become the "forgotten man" in the last couple of years. Taken for granted , mayhaps.

Another great review. Have you ever listened to Twenty One Pilots? Great lyrics, a lot of shifts/tempo changes through out any given song and I'm not a musician but I think Josh Dun does some special stuff on the drums and Joseph Tyler is a lyrical wizard. Amazing stuff from just a 2 man band. You can't go wrong with any of their songs but I would suggest "The Hype", "Chlorine" and "Guns for Hands"...great tempo change in that song.

With the Crown, I've set a high pass filter at 80 Hz. Like you said, these definitely have the "X" factor. I get a smile on my face whenever I listen to music now. BTW, I pretty much have the same taste of music as you. I'm curious about the Emotiva Airmotiv T-Zero towers. Would it be possible for you to review them? Thanks again!

Randy, the SE Atom's so-called 5.5" woofer is not even close to that. It's actual woofer measures 4.25". You shouldn't believe any manufacturer's claim of woofer size without measuring it. They're all snake oil salesmen. The double rings around the SE Atom woofer aren't part of the moving diaphragm and contribute zero bass output. But Paradigm isn't the only "tall-tale teller". The Triangle BR03 claims to have a 6.5" woofer but it's actually 5.5". And even worse, the Wharfedale 225 claims to have a 6.5"woofer but it measures only 5" across. It's a shame that so many manufacturers (and politicians) feel ok with misleading us.

It isn’t feasible for me to demo speakers in stores due to lockdown issues. Trying to find a good pair of speakers for less than $500 CAD and thought KEF Q150 was the way to go but am now considering this too (both now available for $400 CAD)I figure I can’t go wrong with either but any opinions would be welcome. Mostly listen to mainstream pop/rock like Post Malone or Lana Del Rey, nothing esoteric.

Hello Randy, the Paradigm SE Atom is a great pick for review. Was wondering if the SE Atom is enjoyable enough to replace your Polk S20's? Also, since the price is comparable to Atom's, would you consider reviewing the Dali Spektor 1 bookshelf speakers too? Thanks for continuing the barrage of blue collar audio choices. :)
@cheapaudioman
@cheapaudioman 3 жыл бұрын
The Atoms don't quite have the gumption of the S20's. Atoms are ever so slightly more lively on the top end as the Polks. Looking into getting some Dali's in when I can. For all around, the S20's are probably the better option. But if you don't have the space then these are good too. Don't tell anyone, but I'm giving the Klipsch RB 61 ii's a listen right now and they are very very good at $250 amzn.to/3aygtaD

I guess I should've got the jbl studio 570 rather than the 580 since 5.25" seem to do better than 6.5". Luckily, the "6.5 inch" "subs" in the 580 only measure 5.5". But I guess that's the way all 6.5" are. The klipsch 250f might be better than the 280f. Who knows? I guess the 500m maybe better than the 600m?

The Fleetwood Mac you were searching for was, The Chain. Nice low bass throb later on too. Made extra, ultra well known for it's use in F1. WOW. Holee fuck. Soft Machine are awesome. Check out tracks Number Three, straight into The Nodder, off the Alive and Well (in Paris) Album. Incredible. You'll need to look to find a busier drummer. Excepting Neil Peart obviously RIP. Quite a decent tester too. Yello I find tend to be pretty good for testing. Joan Armatrading, Save Me and Sinead O'Connor for female voice. Try Thee Babies without getting a lump in ya throat. Great reviews mate. Bravo. You're doin' a splendid job old love. Another thumb up, and now a sub.

11.2's have gone to greener pastures and are way different that this speaker. Much thicker on the low end and not nearly as lively on the top as the Paradigms. I'll see what I can find on the Adam's but I generally like to spend some time with the speakers before I brutally point all their defects like a bad parent.

Ever since I discovered your channel my friend, I have been stuck with your reviews! In my country, Sony SSCS5 cost 217 € while PARADIGM SE ATOM cost 298 €. Which should I choose as value for money? Which pair sounds best for you? I already have the ELACs UNIFI UB5 (how do they compare to ELAC’s ?) with a CYRUS ONE amp in my listening room and I want to make a system in the living room with the FOSI amplifier you suggest, because I do not have much space there. I prefer to listen music from FLACs and DSDs files because I like hi-res music and detailed high end. Thank you very much.
