These contractile vacuoles are amazing. My students are so amazed, they are all keeping the link to this and showing their parents for extra credit.

what are other bodies moving in the side of paramecium

In Paramecium, which has one of the most complex contractile vacuoles, the vacuole is surrounded by several canals, which absorb water by osmosis from the cytoplasm. After the canals fill with water, the water is pumped into the vacuole

This is for non-salty-water right? I wonder what would happen if it was an isotonic environment.

@@sarias3896 probably passive since it takes place by Osmosis

I love watching contractile vacuoles. Could watch for hours. My favorite is when Phil bumped into Eugene, that was funny.

I don't think it's a time lapse. According to Wikipedia the expansion and contraction cycles are every few seconds!

which part of the movement does the pumping occur? is it when the vacuoles' center seemingly gone or the other way around?

Just observed this and wanted to confirm what was going on. Great video! Also, what are those black lines?
@JESUSSavedMefromDeath
@JESUSSavedMefromDeath 8 ай бұрын
The black lines might be imperfections on the slide itself so disregard. The observation here is a water pump on the bacteria (called a contractile vacuole) that controls the regulation of water inside of the paramecium. Without the pump, the organism can burst due to too much osmotic pressure. Think of a Sump Pump.

The black swimming lines are bacteria. Also, the other reply is mostly correct except that Paramecium is a protist, not a bacterium. That's why it's so much bigger than those little bacteria sticks.
