@@Bengt2509you may be correct, as in parappa the rapper 2, if you do good enough, you can get a bonus game, where you have to press the buttons on time, until the game ends, the game is set in chop chop master onion's dojo. And you have to press buttons to hit boards, if you press a button when a board is not set up, you kick one of the little onion kids, there SHOULD be a video on youtube, if i remember correctly.

Fun fact: they released a um jammer lammy album where it’s a alternate version of the songs even it own original songs and some where Katy replaced the masters like in stage 4, there’s even a album where it’s the parappa version where he does an actual rap

Fun fact: Parappa translates to paper thin in Japanese so Parappa Town is just paper town. Fun how other words in languages can also work for word play!

25:00 black hat difficulty is actually obtainable through a button combination before starting a level, only the black hat model itself is added through modding (it's a retexture) but the difficulty is built in. here's how to do it: Press and hold the R3 button (right stick push) while tilting the right stick vertically up or down for an easier or harder stage respectively. Don't let go until the stage starts to load (record scratching sounds).

There is one currently unplayable game that was only in japan. An Um Jammer Lammy arcade cabinet with the weird plot of Joe Chin exploiting milkcan for their music with alot of extra character content including the lore connection between UJL and parappa 2. It also had the weirdest controller that was probably a reason it didn't do so well.

Same. I was obsessed with parappa 2 black hat and cool mode. What I love the most about the parappa series is that depending on your quality of playing, the game acknowledges it. The differences between Cool Good, Bad, and Awful truly add extra layers of enjoyment for Me and how the stage actually changes. I'll always like PaRappa more than Friday Night Funkin

I wanna add that the hardest difficulty in parappa 2 actually is playable in vanilla. All you have to do is: 1. Have the yellow hat 2. Hold down on the right joystick 3. Press R3 while still holding down 4. Start the stage while still doing steps 2 and 3 You can release R3 once the “Loading…” text appears in the bottom right and the first disc scratch plays. If you did it right, the hardest difficulty should be enabled. Keep in mind the black hat in OddMLMan’s videos is a cosmetic mod, you will still appear with the yellow hat.

I honestly cant beleive you prefer the max difficulty versions. The red hat versions just sound right, y'know. Black hat is like a YTP, Red hat is like the source (Not to say I don't like YTPs, it's just that a YTP is very obviously sentence mixed).

that’s actually an interesting way to think about them. i definitely think there are some verses in the max difficulty versions that sound awkward, but a lot of time they have a lot more energy to them than the red hat versions

oh thank god a parappa retrospective that gives the proper respect to um jammer lammy and actually called it good. girl win on another note, i never really considered that parappa 2 was a much better balance of absurd/sensical stuff. i always figured that the story of parappa 2 was way too un-serious (parappa 1 was about growing up, ujl was about overcoming anxiety and finding confidence) so i disliked parappa 2 way more in terms of its story

Yeah, I'm kind of bummed that there were only three PaRappa games. I long for another game so bad, I'd take a spin off (maybe as Kat or PJ as main characters?) I'd even like if they did something different like make it into an RPG in the Paper Mario way, with us exploring the town - something I always wanted to do with the Parappa universe - having boss battles in a rap off and collecting items such as beard burgers. Yeah, it's not gonna happen but do I wish it were a thing.

32:31 These "black hat" versions can be played in the base game without any mods! Immediately after pressing "Single Play", click in the roight stick (R3) and push it down (while it's still clicked in) and it will lock you to the hardest difficulty. Dynamic difficulty does not activate, though, so if you mess up you're still at the highest difficulty level (which iirc is 16 according to Cheat Engine.) I'm not entirely sure on this but I'm pretty sure this only works when you unlock the yellow hat (circut 4). I know for a fact that it doesn't work on circut one (Orange hat). Also, tilting the right stick up while it's clicked in acheives the opposite effect, putting you on the easiest possible difficulty! (There are other controller combos you can activate, too, like how holding L2 and L1 skips cutscenes and practice mode, R1 and R2 activate easy mode, etc)

I had Um Jammer Lammy, but for some reason if you did “too well” (mashed) on the hell stage, the game would take her into the trip zone with the wiggly psychadelic background and softlock your game. Music wouldnt progress, you could just jam to your hearts content, Very creepy to ten year old me.

Did you know there’s a parappa the rapper show? I don’t see much mention of it now, but the anime is from the early 2000s and seems to have about the same energy as the games as far as I remember. There’s a playlist with most of the episodes if you search for it, but I don’t think there’s a dubbed version if you don’t like subtitles.

I’m suprised you didn’t mention the official Milk Can spotify account. It has full remade versions of Jammer lammy songs with a new voice actor for katie kat singing instead of your normal opponent, implying the songs you played in jammer lammy would later be adopted by Milk Can.

15:49 Scratchin' Melodii (a different Rhythm Game that is VERY similar to Parappa 1 both in how the chart looks and the lyrical speaking) has this on the song Grease Poppin'. In Melodii, though, if you do too bad in that mode then it boots you out and says something along the lines of "let's just stay 2D for now."
