Writer-director, Bong Joon-ho, and actor, Woo-sik Choi, break down the symbolism of the opening scene in their critically-acclaimed foreign film, 'Parasite.' They take us through the bizarre moment we first see the scholar stone and explain how scavenging for set materials and costume design helped create a world that highlights the disparities of wealth and poverty. Bong is honored his film coincides with the celebration of Korean film's 100th anniversary.

Reading sub is far much better than watching a dub over. With subs you can hear the tone of the characters and it really adds to the movie. Dubs don't do any justice .

Bong Joon Ho underlining the word “pretend” saying that it’s a crucial word reminded me when dahye (rich daughter) said that her brother is pretending to be an artist and then jiwoo (poor boy) tells her to write in English using the word “pretend” twice. And by that time, only 2 of the family members were “pretending” to be someone they’re not

I really liked how the director tends to ask the actor "why" when explaining something, it shows that he likes that kind of dynamic of teacher -student, and I think that speaks volumes on the way he directs because he cares that his actors really get to understand the meaning behind what he is doing for the movie or character they're playing....well that´s my point of view :)

The semi-basement apartment is really important. Bong Joon Ho said that class was relative. The Kim family who lives in the semi-basement is poor compared to the wealthy Park family who live in a mansion on a hill. [DON'T READ FURTHER TO AVOID SPOILERS] However they are above the Guk family who live in the basement. The Kims see themselves as above the Guks, not as fellow poor comrades, and their lack of compassion jump starts the tragedy.

All the comments talking about how they should have hired a translator would hardly come up if they were French or Italian (i.e. white.) As others have mentioned, the actor who plays Ki-Woo is Korean-Canadian and the director is quite fluent himself. Stop being lazy and pay attention and read subtitles. Everyone has an accent, including you. Edit: Glad Parasite won all the awards it did. Truly deserving. For those interested, also see his other films e.g. Snowpiercer and Okja. Loved both. It's so interesting how Bong is setting up Woo-shik with questions like a teacher would for a student: "Ok, but what about this thing, why is it here? Why is it important?" The difference is, he wrote and directed everything, more than any teacher he knows the exact answer, he'd rather use this opportunity to give Woo-shik a chance to reinforce his thematic understanding and have time in front of the camera speaking, than just give away the answers.

I think the stone definitely has a symbol, as he focuses on it throughout the movie (it floats in the storm, Kiwoo took it saying it clings to him, it’s used as a weapon and at the end of the movie put into a stream). Bong Joon Ho might have multiple purpose for the symbol but not clearly state them and let us have our own interpretation instead.

OG Guak 420 I read that theory but I don’t think it was fake. If it was hollow/light enough to float, it would be very easy to tell just by holding it. I think it was just resting on something like the table and the water was higher than the table therefore it looked like it was floating.

Even if they brought out a translator and talked through this in their native tongue, it wouldn't have made a drastic difference. As far as I'm concerned (I've watched a fair share of his Korean interviews), Director Bong seems to maintain the same consistent pace and tone whether he's talking in Korean or English. I have so much respect for Bong Joon-ho, Woo-sik Choi, Kang-ho Song, and everyone else involved in this masterpiece. I've seen other movies made by/starring Bong and Song, and they're always amazing. Besides, any good international film will send you down twists and turns you'll never get in an English-language film. Different cultures produce different kinds of stories.
