Let's crack into one of the most unique role playing games of all time! Parasite Eve came out in an experimental time, and as a combination of role playing and survival horror, it couldn't be in my wheelhouse any harder. So, let's jump in!

grab a hacked psp, dl ps1 for psp iso. or if you have decent cellphone just dl ppssp and the game iso. its beautiful old relic, but it doesnt fit for recent trends and taste. maybe they will remake/reconcept/rebuilt this idea when you have grandchildren.. they already make three pe titles, but its kinda butchered the original idea game play story, it doesnt sell well. beautiful old game, lets face it dude, were old

Parasite Eve was my first-ever Playstation game, so it'll always hold a special place in my memories. I still have my original copy in pristine condition. It was unique for its time and the chances Square took mostly paid off. My only complaint is that the game is a little on the short side, probably because it's meant to be played several times to get powerful enough to see the "true" ending. Still, a short game is better than one that overstays its welcome. I'm glad someone else appreciates this game as much as l do.
@AvalancheReviews

Oh yeah! Easily one of the best games I've ever played. It's definitely pretty short, but like you said, it's better than it being padded out. An absolute masterpiece for sure!

Huh, despite being Japanese, Aya Brea (or even Eve's host) having a New York accent would make a little too much sense, all things considered. Even a slight accent wouldn't hurt the game or story at all. She's lived there long enough to pass the bar. She's got to be a true New Yorker..

Fuuuuuck I miss pre rendered backgrounds!!!! Makes me so sad we barely ever get them any more :( I really fucking hope this becomes the next nostalgia thing to come back to indie games. Makes me so sad. Also these graphics are top tier on PS1 easily. It almost feels like square is cheating or something lol some younger people may call it ugly but anyone who's played as many PS1 games as we have know what's up. The art is a pure masterpiece IMO.

I don't think my nostalgia is making me biased, but they sure don't make them like they used to. PE 1's combat system was my favorite. It perfectly blended real time and turn-based. I can't get into today's games for some reason. They're just interactive movies to me where gameplay takes the backseat. Granted, this can be argued as cinematic, but still. This was the golden age of Squaresoft. WTF happened?
@AvalancheReviews
@AvalancheReviews 7 жыл бұрын
I completely agree! 90's squaresoft was on top of the world. They could literally do no wrong for me. It seemed like every game they put out kept raising the bar higher and higher, but after the merger with Enix, things started to go south.

I've played all Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and other great games similar to them back in the late nineties... but this one (Parasite Eve) flew under my radar! I've just tried it, and I gotta say... I'm having more fun with it than most titles coming out for current consoles nowadays. The atmosphere, characters, soundtrack, settings, and EVERYTHING else you mentioned TRULY made these past games, even to this day, stand out above MOST for current gen consoles. This one and Parasite Eve 2 have just earned their spot in my collection of Survival Horror titles. Thanks for sharing, mate! : )

I remember seeing pictures about it in some gaming magazines, especially coupled with articles about the upcoming sequel, and thinking it looked amazing as hell. I had no idea what the gameplay was like, but now I do. Thanks for that! But it really is a shame we never got it over here, because it looks more fun than the sequel, I think. At least combat does. It's really interesting that gameplay looks a lot like Vagrant Story and the world map is rather reminiscent of Front Missions. Also the menu bar is relatively similar to Final Fantasy 8. Kind of like a relatively unknown (or more accurately unplayed) game that fed into some well known classics.

What makes Parasite Eve scary isn't cheap jumpscares or anything of the sort, it's the constant "What the F**K is that!?!" moments throughout the game. Early CGI has always creeped me out due to the unnatural look everything has, and Parasite Eve makes fantastic use of it to emphasize horror through it's character design and atmosphere. Seriously, the mutating rat in particular is the scariest thing I've seen in a video game to date, and that's just one of the minor monsters in the game.

One thing that stood out for the PE series was the modern times setting. Before PE, most RPGs at the time had us using swords and magic in an adventure fighting goblins, dragons, and such. PE was able to take a a JRPG game and mix it with horror in modern day NY using the actual names of IRL firearms with their serial #s. Otherwise, great game combining elements of RE and Final Fantasy

I think that's what hit me the hardest first as well. I mean games had played around with a combination of modern and fantasy, but i think this was my first time seeing a real life city, represented this accurately. Still to this day, it's rare to see an rpg take this sort of route, and that sucks.

I am not a jrpg or turn based rpg player at all I like the first game. I haven't beat it but I liked customizing weapons and the combat system is fun. I won a PSP at a work party around the time 3rd birthday came out and the first two games released on PSN. So I thought I would try them all out.

Awesome look at one of the all-time classics, my man! :D "Parasite Eve" (the sequel included) remains one of my all-time favorite games to this very day, no matter which generation in video game console it was released. :D The story, themes/ideas explored, RPG elements mixed in with Survival-Horror, and of course, the Music is all outstanding! Japanese video game developers understand Atmosphere and Tone unlike any other, utilizing in the most effective way. ^.^ Can't wait for the 2nd part! :D

Thank you Jared for this review. I had never even heard of this game before probably due to growing up in the UK. So as a fan of JRPGs and survival horror I had to check it out. Well around 40 hours and two play-throughs later I have finally finished the game with both endings and had a blast. The Chrysler Building maybe got a little bit stale by the top but I still had a great time with it. Parasite Eve has definitely been propelled into my list of favourite games of all time. Only 20 years after it's initial release! Just thought I would come back to this video and say thank you for the recommendation.

I LOVED Parasite Eve. Such a refreshing change of pace. When I first played it, I was tired of Final Fantasy. FF is a great series, but I wanted something different from it and the other medieval-setting RPGs. I played Parasite Eve and got that. Then I tried Hybrid Heaven on the N64, which was similarly different, but nowhere near as good. Then I played Persona 2, and fell in love with a new series of games.

I'm the exact same way! I love rpgs that take place in something other than your typical medieval setting. I have always had an eye for game like PE, that are set in modern, familiar places. Just the fact that some character in Persona 2, used guns as weapons, helped me really get into it.

parasite eve 2 is my favorite classic re style game. the gameplay is just perfect and the visuals are amazing for the time, the graphics still hold up today. i really wish we had gotten a 3rd game with the same gameplay system as 2. the first game was good, but i'm in the minority who thinks 2 blows it away. the first game has a better story, but everything else about 2 is superior.

As a fellow gentleman from PAL regions, I was completely saddened that we completely missed out on the first Parasite Eve game. I heard about it in magazines as a kid but we never had a privilege to buy it in my part of Europe. So I took the opportunity to play it on the emulator. My God, this game is extremely amazing. It has its shortcomings, but you can damn as well ignore them because this is one of the best PS1 action adventure games with surreal horror elements and in-depth RPG mechanics and the music is just exquisite. I'm surprised the story holds up that well even today compared to modern video game stories nowadays and the cinematic presentation and a unique approach to storytelling are astounding for a 90's video game. I got extremely lucky that I bought it used by someone I know for a fair price few years ago and now I'm a proud owner of this game. I also think that PE2 is a pretty underrated gem. I mean it's definitely not as good as the first one and the music is left a lot to be desired but if I take it for what it is, a solid approach to 90's style survival horror games with infinitely deep mechanics, I wouldn't be as disappointed as were the majority of gamers who were big fans of the original. But 3rd Birthday on the other hand....well the story is practically a convoluted pseudo sci-fi horror with a ham-fisted time travel narrative with a female main protagonist who was exclusively designed for the purpose of the anime fan service and teenage male gaze...well in other words, the story sucks donkey dick multiplied by ten. As for the gameplay...well, let's just say that as a third person action shooter it completely missed the platform, especially when that platform lacks the second analog stick. But even as a third person shooter it lacks depth to be a competent one.

+CliffFitter89 I can't believe you guys Bennett got this classic. That's a Damn crime on Sony's part! As for the other two games, I'm pretty much right there with ya. This is probably one of the most polarizing series in gaming.

Avalanche Reviews What is also a weird part is that the game never came out for European PSN because NA games have a different code that is impossible to decypher for PAL PSN or something like that. I don't know. The same thing happened with Xenogears. You practically have to make the US account to purchase those. It's a shame we will never see another proper Parasite Eve game since Square-Enix has lost the rights for the license use. I do find it cool that Vagrant Story is using the same battle system but it is lot more in-depth.
@AvalancheReviews
@AvalancheReviews 7 жыл бұрын
+CliffFitter89 there has to be some kind of way to make a pal ver of the digital copy. A quick addition of some code allowing it to run at 50Hz would be all that they would really need. They're probably just not sure it would make enough money. Lazy bastards!.

i was honestly so disappointed with what they did to her in 3rd birthday. i know they lost rights to the story and stuff, but i rather they not make anything instead of putting that out there. a lot of people thought that parasite eve was that, and they didn't go and play the first or second one :(. i'm glad you mentioned that each title is basically a standalone, because i really agree.

I vividly remember this game on my childhood. I was about 5 years old and was just paying in my room with Max Steel, when my dad come home from work with a PlayStation 1. It was all news to us all (I only knew Super Nintendo and Mega Drive/Genesis and my dad didn't have much knowledge about videogames other than Atari and SNES). With the console he bought 5 games for us to play, but since he didn't know anything, he just bought the ones he thought the cover looks cool. Parasite Eve was the very first game I ever put on my console and the very first cutscene already scared the hell out of me, so we tried another game...which was Diablo 🙃 What were the other 3 games? Silent Hill and Resident Evil haha Ironically the only game that a 5yo could play and not be scared I don't remember which was. Good times...
