Professor Fink then briefly summarizes the major actions, functions & regulation of Insulin & Glucagon in the maintenance of the plasma glucose level. This is followed by a more in-depth review of the major actions , functions & regulation of Parathyroid Hormone & Calcitonin in the maintenance of the plasma calcium level. Reference is made to the Parafollicular Cells, osteoblasts, osteoclasts, hypocalcemia, hypercalcemia, the importance of calcium in the body, bone density, bone deposition & bone resorption. Professor Fink also describes the prevention of osteoporosis using the bisphosphonate drugs (such as Fosamax, Boniva & Actonel), including their mechanism of action and possible adverse action.
