Who can blame him? Animism is so deeply rooted in the culture and the religion he was born into that he was unable to grasp the central creed of Islam, which is the Unity of God. The Quran tells: Say [O Prophet]: "I am but a mortal man like all of you. It has been revealed unto me that your God is the One and Only God. Hence, whoever looks forward [with hope and awe] to meeting his Sustainer [on Judgment Day], let him do righteous deeds, and let him not ascribe unto anyone or anything a share in the worship due to his Sustainer!" (English rendering by M Asad). Lalon allegedly abandoned the religion he was born into and accepted Islam at some point in his life. However, there is no indication that Lalon studied the Quran at any significant level, his knowledge of the Book was most likely from words of mouth of people around him (who themselves were most likely not well-versed on the subject).
