All they will do is call their office, who will then call police. Such a lack of knowledge and fear mongering on a post about a university. No wonder Dump is doing so well in the primaries.

I’ve lived in the Bay Area all my life, and while some neighborhoods in places like Oakland and San Francisco have long had a reputation for crime, I have NEVER until 2020 heard of crime happening on the kind of scale we’re seeing now, all over the Bay Area, and to the point where people have to be afraid to go outdoors, and companies and now even college campuses around the Bay Area have to hire private security just to escort people around and augment overstretched police forces. It’s EERILY similar to what’s been happening in South Africa for several decades now, which was part of what made my father leave South Africa and come here originally, back in the day. Perhaps it’s time for all the smart people to pack up and leave, and let the place tear itself apart.

It's still one of the most unequal and therefore unjust places on the planet. Such places have never been safe or peaceful for a whole lot of people. That nursing student who got killed while she was jogging should be a wake up call for all young women. Two other young women were also attacked, Mollie Tibbetts and Kayla Hamilton. Be aware of your surroundings, go out in pairs and don't leave each other's sight, carry a whistle or some kind of self-defense device. Fight back.

As someone who has to hire security guards, this is a waste of money unless the university has more actual deputised police patrol. Security only reports what they see and keeps themselves safe.

Young Asian girl was attacked as few blocks away, abduction attempt, iPhone and purse stolen. Many robberies, assaults, stabbings, sexual assaults, murders nearby. Dems brag crime is down in Berkeley and surroinding area. UCB response something like student volunteer or ambassadors. In the city, town council's response is to defund police.

Stocks are pretty unstable at the moment, but if you do the right math, you should be just fine. Bloomberg and other finance media have been recording cases of folks gaining over 250k just in a matter of weeks/ couple months, so I think there are alot of wealth transfer in this downtime if you know where to look.

UC will only take action to avoid bad PR, not to actually protect students. So, parents, keep up the PR pressure. UC will probably, in turn, put backdoor pressure on local media to keep quiet. Keeping up the pressure is the only thing that will work. You have to be in it for the long haul; otherwise, don’t bother getting started.

I agree with Heidi at 3:00 I don't really understand what purpose the private security guards serve. Are they just hoping the guards will act as a deterrent?? They aren't police, they can't arrest anyone - all they can really do is call for help. And the woman who was robbed twice said both incidents were off campus, so what exactly is the goal here? This school is located in a city, so things like robberies, theft, violence, etc. are going to be a little more common than they would be on a more secluded campus.

UC Berkeley had an endowment of $6.7 BILLION as of June 30, 2022. Berkeley could easily afford to pony up more resources for security.

I went to Cal in the 90s and Cal students have always been targets for crime. Back then, it was just wallets since we didn't have phones or laptops. But it's sort of a perfect storm: lots of students who grew up really sheltered sometimes lacking street smarts, carrying around expensive equipment, walking around late at night, maybe on their phones maybe with airpods in. I'm sure it's way worse now with the economy how it is, especially in surrounding regions.

high enrollments and campus expansions, and buildings brings more everything and a big city like the bay area is going to need more security guards.they should have had more guards years ago as the crime is too high. the guards may not be able to prevent many crimes but they can deter it with their presence.
