What Would You Do?

NEW TO KZfaq: When we first broadcast this scenario on September 14, 2012, some parents were using a controversial form of punishment: making their kids wear a sandwich board describing their offense (from stealing to smoking to doing drugs) on a public street. Do you think the punishment is appropriate or humiliating?

What would you do when you think no one is watching? What Would You Do? (WWYD?) explores the varying answers with the help of hidden cameras capturing individuals who have been placed within seemingly everyday situation that quickly go awry. The individuals on this hidden camera show are forced to make tough calls when directly faced with situations of racism, violence, hate crimes, and other hot button cultural issues. Catch John Quinones reporting on these individuals as they make split-second decisions to intervene or mind their own business. WWYD? airs Friday nights at 9|8c on ABC.

You have different kinds of people. This will work on some kids and not on the other part. It really is that simple. But parents must have the time to know their children. Angry kids happen when adults don’t know how to handle an “angry” child. So it’s not so fair to say that this 100% does not work on children.

@@hinata3487 This isn't any less abusive. Violence and humiliation do nothing. Children as a rule act the way they do for a reason. They are not adult and don't process their emotions as well. That's something you learn as you grow and your parents are supposed to help you. When a kid is stealing or being destructive it is usually a call for help. They are trying to express something but lack the emotional development. Once it is older teens who does this kind of stuff it is usually because their parents are too controlling. The kind that have super strict rules during a time period when teens will naturally start to separate from their parents. In a healthy parent-child relationship you can have a dialogue. You set the rules together with the kids, are consistent and let them know that they will never be punished for telling the truth.

An actual good honest talk between a parent their child can do so much more than beating their child causing pain, confusion, aggression toward others etc or being humiliated causing anxiety, shame, a miss opportunity to be closer to your child with a real understanding why doing something like smoking, drinking etc is so wrong. How it can effect you and others especially as who people of color. I learned this at young age. I’m glad I did. I’m glad my parents are straight up the point and explained what that kind of stuff can do a person let alone the people around them. As well as being in a very opens minded and outspoken generation. Just a talk. A talk can do so much. A talk is enough. As long the talk is reasonable, honest, and real and not guilt tripping your child as well. Just A TALK can do much more than you think it can.

Whenever I misbehaved I got shut in my room and wasnt allowed outside until I'd calmed down. I'd overhear my parents dismissing it all as me looking for attention and they'd talk about how bad of a child I was to everyone. Family, strangers, everyone. I'm an adult and they still do it now. I didn't realise it until I turned 23 that it wasn't normal for parents to treat their kids that way and that compared to other kids, I was a saint. It turned out to be the root cause of my trust issues, commitment issues, lack of social skills, lack of emotional awareness and people pleasing all of which stayed with me until my mid 20s where I started noticing it and tackling it through therapy. Thats what emotional abuse does to your kids. It follows them through to their adulthood. As awesome of an idea it may seem to dissuade poor behaviour, it's not a good idea for being a parent. Please don't do this.

She'll be laughing until she does that to one of her kids and they won't talk to her anymore. Humiliating this kid does more harm than good. The kid won't ever want to talk to her again, and he'll probably just retaliate in some way. You wanna know why black men are 6 times more likely to go to jail? The home. It all starts in the home. Totally see what you’re saying. But I think she said that because if a black person breaks the law they can be punished far more severely than anyone else. She saw it as important to teach black children to behave because it’s dangerous if they don’t. Sometimes it’s even dangerous if they do.

It really is worse for the child to be humiliated because that’s just a form of emotional abuse. Instead of talking it out, she is making it worse :( To be honest, no child should ever be treated like that.
