My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much.
Links below to Amazon are affiliate links - meaning if you click through them and buy something, I'll get some pennies. Thanks! (The FTC wants me to tell you that up front)
FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? Over five years now, holy cow.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGearList
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
Do you speak French? - Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
Do you make money off KZfaq? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $5/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jayswanson
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. So instead people often drop off or ship things to the Peloton Cafe in Paris for me.
Thanks for watching!

I love the Pantheon. Never went to the top when we went must go back. When we went the crypt was going to be closing in an hour and it was recommended we go there 1st. We rushed through the beautiful former church to go downstairs. At the pendulum there was a group of blind people and I remember feeling sad that they couldn't see the beauty around them. When we were in the crypts a little while later we came upon the tomb for Braille and it all made sense why they were there. I shed a tear. We even saw a young french girl leave a rose and make the sign of the cross on the tomb of a resistance fighter. Very touching. Also, I think what a party Victor Hugo, Emile Zola & Alexander Dumas are having in their tomb together. There is one spot left in their crypt. Jay, there is room for you there!

Thanks for the video Jay. I've been in the Pantheon a few times in the past, and I took my brother last month. There was this super annoying woman in the crypt that didn't stop shouting "Silence", and she was the only one making noise, almost waking up Madame Curie. They send you a survey later, i wrote that she really damaged the experience LOL.

Jay, just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for the hard work and generosity of putting these videos together. My wife and I are going to be doing a 24-hour stopover in Paris later this month and your videos have relieved us of some hesitation and anxiety of visiting Paris. All we knew were the standard cliches involving Americans visiting Paris. I can honestly say that we are now looking forward to our visit. I'm sure we'll screw up somewhere along the way, but we will overcome and enjoy our short visit.

Hey, so glad these videos have helped put you at ease. Paris is a lot to take in, especially in such a short amount of time, but it's great you're seizing the opportunity! And remember - if you're ever feeling overwhelmed, just stop, look up at the gorgeous buildings around you, take a few deep breaths, and you'll feel 10X better!

I told my wife that Jay Swanson did not recommend spending time inside the Pantheon. She flipped. She got upset because, like myself, believes that the inside of the Pantheon is some of the most beautiful art. The ceilings .. are otherworldly. The views at the observatory are awesome, but as a mathematician I couldn't get over being in the same spaces as my favorite mathematicians in the crypt. My wife used her phone to take photos of the murals and Google somehow figured out what they were and presented her with the history of the individual paintings. There is so much to see, to feel, to be in awe of ... the history. Jay can go chase his $9 cup of coffee, really? .. but I recommend you take the time to reflect upon all that the Pantheon represents and offers up to us .. inside and out. -Daniel (Paris)

Hi Daniel! Emily here - I agree the inside of the Pantheon is beautiful! Jay focused on the view and the crypt (for the same reason as you, being in the same space as some of those buried there) - but that's just his personal preference! If you watch some of his other videos, you'll see he often spends quite a bit of time in churches admiring the art and architecture, and has a deep appreciation for it :) Sorry you didn't vibe with this video, but hope you find others more enjoyable!

Love the 5th! It feels like an escape from some of the busier stretches of Paris! There's a brilliant flea market at the end of Rue Mouffetard down to Gobelins at the weekend! Highly recommend Caluche and Verse Toujours as 2 entirely different types of restaurants but just off the usual tourist path!

Really nicely done, just the right amount of detail. Yes, the crypts were---- better then I expected, hard to describe. Good luck doing the 4th, only 5 recommendations is going to be hard, 50 would be easier...

Au P’tit Grec looks nice - kind of French crepe meets Greek gyros. Agree about Rue Mouffetard - it used to be great many years ago but seems to have gone downhill a bit. Cheers for the recommendations Jay!

The two times I visited Paris were last Fall and then late winter in the middle of the garbage strike (stinky!). Yes, I enjoyed my first visit so much had to book another trip shortly after. Anyway, stayed at Hotel des Arènes, which is a decent reasonably priced hotel located in between le jardin des plantes and rue Mouffetard, overlooking the ancient roman arena. I thought it was brilliant, and yes I did enjoy rue Mouffetard a lot... Fight!!! 🙂

Great video (and shirt, BTW) - I had to pause a lot of those remarkable shots from the roof of the Pantheon. Is that a better set of views than Arc De Triomphe? I get your take on the 5th / Latin Quarter as what some might call touristy, but it was the first place I stayed in Paris and so holds a special place in my heart. It'a a great central location - lots of 'sights' to walk to, or only a few Metro stops away - and more crepes than you could shake a stick at. At the time you could get a plain crepe for a few euros. It was fun.

We rented on Rue Gracieuse close to Place Monge (great market!) and easy walk to Rue Mouffetard. I was amused when I figured out that we were only a street away from the boarding house in Père Goriot. They've evidently made some improvements since then. Also, whenever we're in Paris we always have lunch at the Vieux Bistrot, "a good deal for a tasty meal," and the people who run it are swell. So, I was happy to see it around the 5:14 mark.

I had visited Paris many times before 2018. In 2018 we rented a place on Thouin near Pantheon because this was one of our favorite quartiers. After living there for five months, and feeling out the quartier as well as many others, in 2019 I bought an apartment on Mouffetard. All in. No regrets. Like you, I enjoy all the different areas of Paris, but have no doubts about choosing rue Mouffetard. No street in Paris is it's equal. Because it is populated by 30% students, 30% tourists, and 30% locals, it is buzzing at all hours of the day, with all of these groups of people, but never overwhelmed by any. It is teeming with youthful energy, the curiosity of tourists, and vegetable markets for the locals. You can wake up in the morning, and watch the mood of the road change through the day as the three main constituencies shift in and out.

@@JaySwanson It's good 6 days a week (not Monday). But the best advice is to walk down the street and end at Square St. Medard on a Sunday between 11h and 13h. You'll see history, cafe, market, music, and dance.

Love your videos, and I’m looking forward to visiting Paris next summer. Quick question: I’ve noticed so many of the businesses in your videos advertise in English. The signs outside, the black boards with the menus, there just seems to be so much English in Paris. Is this just the way it is, or are you typically favoring establishments that cater specifically to Anglophones. Just curious. Thank you.
