FRANCE: "That is the question everyone in Paris is asking!" Sensational news in parliamentary elections!
Following the surprising outcome of the parliamentary elections in France, political talks on how to proceed will begin on Monday. After no coalition won an absolute majority in Sunday's election, it is not clear who will lead the next government. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced on election night that he would submit his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron on Monday.
At the same time, Attal signaled his willingness to remain in office until a new government is formed, especially since the Olympic Games begin in Paris in three weeks.
After the right-wing populist Rassemblement National (RN) had been ahead in the first round of the parliamentary election a week ago, Marine Le Pen's party was predicted to have a good chance of triumphing in the second round. Instead, however, the left-green New Popular Front electoral alliance was forecast to become the strongest force. The RN only came in third place behind President Macron's government camp.
It is unclear who could become the new head of government. The left-green electoral alliance has not yet been able to agree on a common candidate. France must prepare for a period of great political instability: the three large blocs in the National Assembly could block each other, paralyze the government and plunge the country into a political crisis. The left-green alliance is hostile to the Macron camp and is also divided internally.
The former leader of the left-wing populist party La France Insoumise (LFI), Jean-Luc Mélenchon, claimed on election night that his electoral alliance would form a government. LFI is the largest group within the alliance, but Mélenchon is not wanted by the other parties involved.
Despite many differences, left-wing populists, socialists, communists and the Greens surprisingly forged an alliance before the first round of the parliamentary elections. However, they were unable to agree on a common candidate for the office of prime minister.
"Is this the biggest crisis of the Fifth Republic?" commented Gael Sliman from the Odoxa polling institute. President Macron had hoped that the new elections he had called would bring clarity; "now we find ourselves in total uncertainty - in a very thick fog." Macron had called the early parliamentary elections after the poor performance of his government camp and the success of the RN in the European elections.
According to projections, the New Popular Front electoral alliance will have between 177 and 198 MPs in the future, falling well short of the absolute majority of 289 seats. LFI MP Clémentine Autain called on the electoral alliance's parliamentarians to meet on Monday to elect a prime minister.
The second largest bloc in the future parliament is the current government camp with 152 to 169 seats. The Rassemblement National won between 135 and 145 seats, more than ever before.
Group leader Le Pen stressed that her party's victory had "only been postponed". RN top candidate Jordan Bardella denounced the New Popular Front and the government camp as an "alliance of shame" that had robbed the French of a "policy of recovery". The RN was more than ever the "only alternative".
In the second round of voting, numerous candidates from the left-wing alliance and the government camp decided not to run again in favour of the other party in order to prevent the right-wing populists from gaining ground.
On election night, thousands of people in the center of Paris celebrated the defeat of the right-wing populists. Cries of joy rang out on the Place de la République when the first forecasts were published shortly after the polling stations closed.
