Trying the travel photography challenge (only take one camera) with a Rolleiflex TLR, what could possibly go wrong? Alastair has some good revelations on this trip when he elects to leave all digital cameras and other lens options behind. Airport CT scanners are a real concern (and problem) for film but ultimately some great images are realized.

Love the Rollei. Managed to find an excellent copy of a Rolleicord III for $500. It is an attention getter but in a good way. People don’t see a 1950 film camera often so they are curious and ask questions.

I had some an issues with an Airport Scanner at Indianapolis airport. This was my fault because I should have asked for a hand check of all those rolls but through all to commotion going with the lines I didn't. I had Tri-X 400 pushed to 1600. The film was fogged but I was able to still make good darkroom prints from them. I learned a valuable lesson.

FYI Todd Korol has a good video of a Thailand trip where he used a Rolleiflex 3.5f as his only film camera.

Yeah, he also posted one where he shot in Cuba with a Leica. Great minds think alike, it would seem. Thanks for the reminder, I’ll check it out again.

I do love film and I do love these cameras. But the value proposition is getting worse each year. The fact that some of my favourite film cameras are super cheap is of little consolation. Alas.

OR you can take the Flex for color and a Cord for B&W. I usually wind up mostly going with one or the other on a particular day but if you're playing tourist then why vex yourself with the few shots that got away (museum pieces every one!)?

Not a bad idea. And it means I can buy more cameras!

hits and misses. The original idea of one lens, one Rolleiflex, one film was from someone else. Perhaps it should be attributed to @Peter Bongard www.youtube.com/@pbfotografiert who did it 6 years ago.

The original idea was suggested to me by a friend in 2012 when I went to Cuba, but the idea itself is age-old. I’m not suggesting it was my idea - only that I really enjoyed the challenge. I’ll take a look at Peter’s work. I wasn’t aware of him before you commented. Thanks.

@@UnderexposedwithAlastairBird sorry for my wording, I also did not mean any accusation of plagerism. It was just coming to my mind as I watch it.

@PatAcct no offence taken - thanks for the reply. I’m always interested in how different people come up with the same idea independently.

Aastair Bird : I shoot in a 10 bladed Tessar 75mm 3.5 MX-EVS and my premium Rollei is the Wide Rollei 50mm F4 Distagon ; the Wide is incredibly sharp , and the ten blade iris on the Tessar is superb too. I love film and it's look .. Question : Can you get your film developed BEFORE leaving so it is easily transportable , in spite of the ( BS ) scanners ? Did you hand inspect flying out too ? C.

Hey Chris - the film wasn't hand-inspected, I'm afraid. From now on I'll have it hand-inspected. I suppose you could get the film processed before you fly out, but I was only in Paris for a few days. Regardless, several lessons learned. As for the Rollei Wide - very nice! I have looked at them before but they're out of my price range until I sell off a few other cameras.
