I took your advice and assembled a wardrobe for a 2-week trip to London (in May). 4 bottoms, 5 tops, trench coat, 3 pairs of shoes, 1 bag. Everything mix/match and outfits suitable for the plane (14-hour flight), dinner out, sightseeing, walking, in all weathers. Merci, great advice!

I love the outfits with a silk neck scarf, it’s such a classic, feminine accessory and it adds color, pattern and elegance. I’ve been wearing them for 40 years, since introduced to them by two Parisienne ladies. This is my favorite way to wear pattern and color, just in this little touch, with a dress or other outfit in my basic, mostly neutral colors (white, navy, taupe, other cool browns, khaki green, black [a little, it’s very harsh on me], etc). They also give so much variety to simple outfits, and it’s an easy way to change them up, just add a scarf! Patterned dresses, etc., can be overwhelming for my small frame, and are just more memorable than solid colors. So, if one wears a print dress, say every week to work, it will seem tired or overworn sooner than a solid. I do like some patterned dresses and skirts, but mostly in classic dots, stripes and checks/plaids. Florals can be tricky, so I choose them carefully for clothing items, I prefer white backgrounds with shades of one color, like blue, taupe or green, or two, and in a small to medium scale. I just ordered a beautiful pale green and white, very subtle foliage print dress in linen. Patterned linen dresses are surprisingly difficult to find, but linen dresses are a must for the hot summers where I live, and I like to have one or two with pattern, in addition to my solid color ones.

I agree with the silk shirts. I have quite a few and I love them. They’re simple but luxurious styled up or down.

I would personally add a few pastels into the capsule for spring.

A silk shirt or blouse is my almost-daily Go To, but I could use a few short-sleeved ones for warmer weather. The ones I have are mostly long-sleeved, which I wear 3/4 of the year, as base layers under wool or cashmere in the winter or on their own spring and autumn. I wish I could find more silk jersey ones, even simple tees, silk jersey is the most comfortable fabric in the world! Thanks, Alice, for this stylish capsule wardrobe.
