That descent from Empire into PC is one of the fastest descents in the country. On the final mile stretch, straight on, -10% grade at over 8000', it's easy eclipse 65 mph without a tuck. Railing that without traffic, without the stop sign, without the traffic circle traffic... what a thrill that would be!

It's always interesting to me that there's still so much vegetation at that altitude. In this part of Europe the tree line is at about 1600-1700 meters(about 5000ft) and there's mostly bare rock with occasional grass patches over 2200m (about 6500ft)

Whoa. I never knew that! Tree line here in Colorado (and Utah for the matter) is generally around 11,500 ft.

Here in California our tree line is mostly around 8,000ft(2,500m). It can go all the way up to 12,000ft(3,500m) though. On my last trip to Alaska I could have sworn the tree line was no higher than 4,000ft(1,200m). Pretty crazy how much It changes.

Perhaps Phil should have used the "outro" music at the beginning of the video. I recognized it immediately. It just happens to be the theme introduced before a set of wonderful variations at the beginning of the Sonata in A major K. 331 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. If you can spare about 20 minutes, I recommend listening to the whole work. Do a KZfaq search on "Mozart K. 331".

I called a buddy "hey man, there's no way I'm gonna make it up the backside" to which he replied " one foot in front of the next". Hardest ride back ever. The top 1.5mi of the backside is all gravel at 14%, no bueno

My favorite bike tour is one I have done twice. It's a week long ride starting in Moab and riding to the five national parks plus the Grand Canyon. Utah is simply spectacular from the seat of a bicycle. I can' even imagine myself going up some of the inclines at the speed Phil achieves. How does he put out so many watts for such a long period of time?

Can you do videos on weight, eating, training or recommend? I bought your books so maybe there is info there. Diet vs miles wrt to weight ? I suspect 50-50. Thoughts on keto, Paleo, protein and veggie and lo glycemic. Would you ever discuss how you would have done if you doped or others didn’t? Eg how good was Greg lemond who claims not to have doped and was pre epo so his times are a good comparison perhaps. How do you compare to a clean Tom Danielson?

The altitude is pretty hard to comprehend. The only way to get above 7300ft in Australia is to fly. In my state (Queensland) the highest peak is 5300ft (Mt Bartle Frere, no road to the top) and one of only a few above 4000ft. It’s a big flat expanse.

It's a skydio drone I think, look it up. It flies itself and has a cool auto follow feature. I think it's linked to a gps sensor that Phil has in his jersey, or his phone. You can tell because it follows him after that near miss even though it's not focusing on him, then once the drone spots him it zooms back down to his level.

Any tips? YES!!! How about ride single file up a single lane mountain road with cars! Number one reason why people in cars hate us bike riders is exactly what you are doing. Thanks for creating more bike hate. You should know better by now. Hug that white line on your left, give cars more space so they do not have to cross over into on comming traffic or follow you at 8mph. Smarten up! Filming a youtube video does not constitute this kind of reckless behavior.
