What's in a name? Well, in the case of dystonia and dyskinesia the name tells quite a lot about how these are completely different issues. Watch this first part of a two part series on dystonia vs dyskinesia. In part ONE we will talk about what the are and what is different about them

Thank you for clearing up the distinction between the two.

Absolutely! They can often be confused with each other, especially those who are not medically trained.

I’ve been told that what I’ve been experiencing is Dyskinesia but not every description of it ties in with what I experience…….I wonder if I’m getting a bit of both ! Anyway, whatever it is, it’s far worse than the PD itself. I can always tell when an attack is imminent as my mouth goes bone dry 🤨 and generally stays that way for the duration….

It’s definitely possible to have both. I’ve seen that before in practice. Do you see a pattern to it? The dry mouth makes me think it’s more during an “off” time.

@@parkinsonsdiseaseeducation There may be a pattern or patterns but I’ve failed to identify one as I can go 3 or 4 days with nothing as opposed to the attack I’m experiencing this very moment which actually began about 24hrs ago ! This is a first as sleep usually kills it dead but last night it wouldn’t let me sleep which is a bad omen for the future 😫

Although this has been a very long difficult episode the intensity of the symptoms has varied…….

I’m sorry for what you are going through, it sounded difficult to deal with and being unpredictable must be stressful. I wish I had a more individual answer for you, but in general it boils down to levels of dopamine. Dykinesia tends to be on times or higher doses of dopamine, dystonia tends to be off times or low dopamine. There is a subtype of dyskinesia that can also happen with lower dopamine levels but the name escapes me.

I’ve made various attempts at describing this deeply unpleasant phenomenon, best I’ve come up with has been that it’s like dozens of invisible hands pushing and pulling me in different directions at once but these hands can reach inside aswell…..my stomach can become the rope in a tug of war, twisting and contorting causing extreme nausea. It’s absolutely no fun atall but I’d still take this over motor neurone disease. Have to look for the positives lol

What is the best treatment for child with both condition?
@parkinsonsdiseaseeducation
@parkinsonsdiseaseeducation 5 ай бұрын
This is a difficult question to answer, which brings up follow up questions for clarification: 1. What condition does the child suffer with? 2. What are the triggers for the movement symptoms? 3. What treatments are currently being done for the child? What’s working and what isn’t? 4. Is the child currently seeing a neurologist that can help to prescribe treatment?

how can we avoid these in PD patients? is there a way to prevent it ? thanks
@parkinsonsdiseaseeducation
@parkinsonsdiseaseeducation Жыл бұрын
If there is a way to 100% prevent it I am unsure. Dyskinesia tends to result from peak doses of levodopa while dystonia tends to result from off times where dopamine is too low. Exercise and physical therapy can be really helpful in improving either, especially dystonia.
