It was Halloween night and Parliament Funkadelic was about to tear the roof off the
Houston Summit, ready to bless the crowd with their cosmic brew of interplanetary
funk. George Clinton, Bernie Worrell, Bootsy Collins and the rest of the P-Funk
collective were riding the success of their first Top 5 R&B hit, "Give Up The Funk (Tear
The Roof Off The Sucker)," a track that had earned them the kind of radio play that
would bring the masses out to see them live in a stadium-sized arena. The group was
only five dates into the tour when they arrived in Houston, but they were definitely
ready to take it to the stage for an out-of-this-world show like no other.
Taped on October 31, 1976, these seldom-seen performances at the Houston Summit
represent Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic in their ʼ70s prime, in the era of their
Mothership Connection and The Clones Of Dr. Funkenstein LPs-a rare opportunity
for everyone to get their proper dose of The P-Funk.

Gotta be the best performance of Undisco Kidd. The way Glenn, Gary and Ray come in with the background vocals…fire. The faster tempo…fire. George’s skill of putting another song (I Call My Baby Pussycat) into the groove…genius. Bernie’s solo…straight heat!

This version of the song >>> Tales of Kidd Funkadelic version. Bernie just killing it smoothly and Garry playing that soulful rhythm in the back, sneaking up on you whenever Bernie takes a pause. Stingray on the vocals and George too doing an excellent job on the high notes. Bigfoot keeps that beat super funky and groovy.

Actually, Bernie told me that Bootsy wrote the Flashlight bass line on his space bass but that when he heard it, he started noodling around with it on the Moog and the rest, as they say, is history. Also, that's Boot on both drums and guitar...

@ThirdMother-There is a multitude of reasons for why Parliament-Funkadelic never crossed over in the way that other acts did. Their lack of TV exposure has a lot to do with it. They were never featured on Soul Train. And their live show could easily delve into x-rated territory. That is definitely one of the reasons.

@ThirdMother Parliament was very popular. It even filtered out to the bowling alleys of rural Minnesota, as I remember in the day. I think your comparison to Zappa is apt (and he also got a fair bit of radio play and sold a lot of concert tickets) and I do agree that it is strange that lesser stuff sold a lot more. It seems like large bands and highly skilled musicians are hard to come by these days. I remember Rick James saying something like "they don't teach music anymore"

@DestinysVictor-He did more than developed it. He made into a movement. He turned it into religion. Before P-Funk, Funk was an off shoot of soul. You wouldn't see so many bands trying to imitate the P-Funk sound if they just 'developed' it. The prime movers of Funk clearly are James Brown, Sly Stone and GC/P-Funk. Dems the facts.
